Regarding setup notes:

A few of you have sent in additional notes regarding your car setup along with your results.

I have tried (unsuccessfully) to come up with a neat and easily readable way of including these in the results table but it just looks a mess, so instead, might I ask that you post them yourselves here in this thread?

It is up to you when you want to post them - either before the results come out so that others can see what you are running should they wish to challenge you in the current round, or after the results have been posted in order to show/explain/excuse how you achieved what you did. Both approaches could be interesting, as is the amount of information you choose to disclose (if any).

Well, after setting some lap counts with my buggies yesterday, the plan for this morning was to have a serious attempt at a podium with my TT-02 Type S. I even fitted it with its Sorex 36R-shod lightweight disc wheels and unrealistic yet aerodynamic race blob bodyshell. However rain last night meant that my running area was soaking wet this morning, so after sweeping the worst of the standing water towards the gutters, it was out with the all-weather rally cars instead.

First up was my 23t brushed TA-02 Subaru Impreza, which managed the same lap count in the wet as my Hotshot achieved in the dry! Next up was the TT-01 Mitsubishi Evo, which did better (as expected as it runs a 13.5t Bluebottle), beating the Hotshot and DT-02 Desert Gator's dry times. However it still wasn't quite as quick as the Thundershot and TT-02B Neo Scorcher were in the dry yesterday.

As it is my fastest all-weather car, I now need to either hope that the tarmac dries sufficiently for a competitive run with my TT-02 Type S later this afternoon, or call it for the day and hope that my runs yesterday with the TT-02B were good enough for a podium place in this round.

Made an attempt for this round and get a result which I've just submitted. Must say when you see the track layout on the screen you think no problem. But it wasn't so easy to find a place in my, I would say big garden, were is enough space. Almost everywhere are trees or children play structure. Managed to set up the track and made a training of ten minutes, followed by two attempts. Not so easy as it seems but fun. Next time I will try to drive my TA03-F. This time I had to stay inside my garden and therefore I've took the Dirt Thrasher. Here it is after the run.

The mudlets did some more lap attempts today using their old thundershots plus middle mudlet tried to better her Terra Scorcher laps from yesterday but failed. The tarmac was not as dry as yesterday, it had rained overnight and was still slightly damp/greasy.

I won't bother listing the setup of all my cars unless somebody specifically asks however my Thundershot which ran yesterday has the following setup:

813639564_stigeater(1).thumb.jpg.cac451664ac52f98bb270b380f27a9a6.jpg

  • Thundershot 'Stig Eater'
  • adjustable camber links front and rear
  • adjustable steering links
  • Tamiya 13T Dyna Run Super Touring Motor (33K rpm)  plus TL01 alloy motor heatsink
  • 14 tooth pinion (limits top speed to 30mph but gives very quick acceleration and longer run times)
  • Absima 5000mah 2S LiPo square hard body battery (tub modified to square off the battery tunnel)
  • Hobbywing 1060 ESC
  • 2.2 inch Losi race wheels (rear machined out to suit Tamiya short axle threads)
  • Schumacher Cactus Rear tyres (silver compound) with medium foams (tyres glued to rim)
  • Schumacher Cactus Fusion Front tyres (silver compound) with medium foams (tyres glued to rim)
  • 5 degree negative camber front

Managed to get out to my car park track today. Chilly and damp in the air, but it’s a covered car park so dry at least.

This sortie had the F104, TA06R and the first run for my TB05.

BE3FA44E-B4EC-4532-9C2D-537D8C2941C7.jpg

I didn’t think it was that cold, but the track temperature must be right down, as I couldn’t get the F1 to do anything consistent. Missing some body work didn’t help, so I retired the car and focused on the other two entrants.

TA06R struggled with the cold too, but with some care things were fine. Some interesting pirouettes when mid track when I got a bit too eager with the throttle. I could smell the silver can by the end of it, never mind feel it. So some gearing investigation to be done.

As you can see the TB05 isn’t finished with the body shop, but I’ve been itching to get it out there. It didn’t disappoint either, nice and smooth and predictable, the brushless power going down sweetly. Tires seem to warm quicker, and the slides were a lot of fun. Motor just mildly warm, so perhaps another tooth or two to change.

Lap wise I improved over the wet outdoor laps I achieved with the XV01. Be nice to have a closer comparison, so I’ll have to get my XV01TC rebuilt.

Consistency is the killer though, too tempting to power slide round corners. Be nice to get more track time, but I’m limited to Sundays and gaps between toddler eating/sleeping/boredom for these touring car runs.

NEW TOY for the TT-02S SM RRRR GT4! 😁 spacer.png

From my Wounded Warrior buddy! So nice of him to do, out of the blue. The Tires feel softer and grippier too. 😉

Thought of this on the fly..... If you have Diabeetus or know someone who does - SYRINGES might just be the best Tire Glue Applicator I've ever used!!! spacer.png

Ultra Thin CA sucks right into it, and with a teeny weeny 32 Gauge needle, it NEVER releases too much Glue, and goes EXACTLY where you need it. No waste, no gluing Tyres to your FINGERS!! 😁

Best of all, when done, the Needle is protected by a Cap, that after you fit the Cap, it's almost instantly glued to the Syringe - protecting little hands and big Trash Collector hands! Try it out!

Of COURSE I had to try them out! 😉 spacer.png

TRACK LAYOUTS:

As Round 4 draws to a close, don't forget that anyone is able to submit a suggested track layout for Round 5. Whoever wins Round 4 can then choose to use one of the suggestions as-is, use it as inspiration for their own design, or come up with something on their own.

It is an odd-numbered round, so we are looking for something small and compact that can be set up without needing a lot of space.

Curious to know if there is any significant weight or camber difference between your TT02B and Thundershot?

Both run similar camber, as measured by my Mk.1 eyeball as I don't have my own setup station. There is a bit of a weight difference - 1490g vs. 1561g for the TT-02B and Thundershot respectively - but thinking back, I suspect that my driving may have been the biggest factor at play. The dynamic appearance of the Thundershot in motion encouraged me to push it harder into corners, steer more aggressively and accelerate harder out of them in order to better appreciate all of the body and suspension movement. The TT-02B on the other hand didn't do any of this, sitting flat and steady even when provoked, so I just got on with driving it smoothly and sensibly, which was no doubt easier on the tyres.

I submit this, IMHO it takes everything we have learnt from previous rounds and dumps it into one bigger track design. True, it now needs 7 marker cones and will take a little bit longer to lay out but I think this should give us a nice challenge. However I would beg for an extra week or so between rounds if this was chosen as it will require more time to setup and practise.

That looks like quite the track, but is perhaps a bit big for Round 5 if we are going continue alternating between tight, compact tracks and longer ones. A good candidate for Round 6 though!

You aren't the only one who is finding a two-week round a bit short with the current weather, so yes, I think for Winter we should extend the length of each round to three weeks going forwards. Any objections?

(This would apply from Round 5 onwards until amended - our current round still ends at Midnight tonight.)

Thanks, I thought round 4 was a tight track LOL  - my Avante2001 (and to some extent even my Thundershot) could not get up to anywhere near full speed on just a 10m straight :D

The very small tracks favour my daughters slower cars..... are you deliberately trying to let them beat me! :D

EDIT: Youngest mudlet came within 1 lap of beating me in round 3 using a bl**dy silver can arrrgghhhh

EDIT2: Now if it could just snow quite deeply then I'd have a chance because the mudlets buggies can't do snow whereas my crawler can

I think that @mud4fun's Laguna Seca Replica might be fun for those of us who have been around Tracks.....

Who knows? Take it to a vote??🗳

Well done @TurnipJF   (ps. Loving your buggy names)

I have managed to match your best lap times on a couple of rounds now which is promising as it means the speed is there in the car,  sadly I just don't have the consistency over a race distance to catch you, I make too many stupid mistakes and lapses of concentration. Maybe by round 400 I'll have managed to go an entire 5 minutes without sliding into a pile of leaves, flipping into a gravel trap or smashing into a kerb.... :D

Congrats to everybody who entered and nice to a see a pair of blackfoots on the score card this time too :) (I shall try and get my poor broken king blackfoot fixed for next round)

Great results people 👍🏻 All in good fun again.

I’d be more than happy to spread the time between races to go to 3 or 4 weeks apart @TurnipJF, how’s your inbox by the way? Must be getting a bit full. Very much appreciated as well what you do too.

I think I might get lost on this one about half way through 😂. Still keen to give it a go sometime though👍🏻 Lucky I made 8 markers.

Practice for me is generally around 3 laps then the timer starts with just 2 batteries to share the work between a few cars.

Those Mudlets are very impressive 👍🏻

Talking about fun, I managed to go too hot into one corner and ran wide, right into a 12 inch deep pile of dry leaves at the side of the driveway. All you could see as I was trying to extricate myself was leaves seemingly moving on their own as my buggy had completely vanished beneath it, so funny :D

Thank you, I think youngest mudlet deserves special recognition for doing so well with her Vanquish that she had never driven before, she got just two attempts in with the Vanquish, the first attempt and very first time she had ever driven the car was only a few laps short of her second attempt recorded above. Congrats to her as the Vanquish is a twitchy thing, a bit quicker and completely different to drive compared to her normal thundershot. :)

I was just looking through the Lap monitor race data for my races. Quite depressing really, I had a best lap time of 5.5 seconds and then a few laps later one of 12 seconds (probably when I vanished under the leaves), no consistency at all.

Even more depressing is that the mudlets had more consistent, albeit slower, lap times than me.

My average lap time was 0.7 seconds slower than my best lap time, over 50 laps that is one heck of a lot of lost time, nearly 6 laps down from what I could have achieved had I been able to maintain the best lap pace. @TurnipJF I stand in awe of your consistency! :)

New year's resolution will be - concentrate on consistency :D

And I in turn stand in awe at your pace!

While I tend not to have any really terrible laps in a session, I also don't have all that many really quick ones. If you had a 12-second lap, yet still managed to do 50 laps in total, that means you must have had several really awesome laps to make up for it. That is something to feel proud of!

Back in the pre-Coronapocalypse days of club racing, I was told that my driving is rather boring to watch. The victories that came my way were often achieved by simply not crashing when others did. Those drivers who either crashed and burned or managed blisteringly quick laps tended to get onlookers far more excited about the race.
