What's your next Tamiya (or non-Tamiya) RC project kit? And what kits do you have set aside for 2020/21?

Recommended Posts

I was just thinking of some of the NIB/unbuilt kits I have and I always assume I will run out of them before I run of out time. But, I have more to build than time to build them and I don't even have a lot in store . Winter is coming and I dread painting during that weather.

I'm curious to hear what everyone's next new kit project is or list of NIB/unbuilt kits in storage? Curious to read what's trending. How many do you have more to go in store?

oh, that's when i purchase hop ups so as they come in slowly but surely it'll be time for that next build and by then searching for the hop ups some other nifty kit comes out and the cycle starts all over, it's a wonderful catch 22.:)

Funny you should ask. I'm waiting on an unassembled M06 NIP chassis (but not NIB, so no body, no wheels, and no electronics) that I won on eBay, to go along with the laundry list of M06 hopups that I had bought already. I'll be starting with that once the VX-01LDS is done.

I'm hoping my Boxster body will fit on this, since I feel a Porsche body deserves better underpinnings than the M02 can offer. If not, there is always plan B. And plan C, D, and E

Pass. Got my pay on Friday with back pay from our pay rise from April, so a bit of spare cash this weekend so have spent the weekend between callouts trawling the Tamico website. I would ideally like to do a Brat or a Blackfoot for a basher and then start saving for a pickup to join the 4x4 collection, perhaps a Hilux CC-01

Funny how many ideas I had before Covid struck the planet earth.

Went from 9 cars to 5 now, since 2019

F103 - needs a new servo (no driving condition)

F103LM - needs a new correct spur

FF03 - needs new uprights in the front (no driving condition)

M05ver2 - runs perfectly, could use a new set of tires

M02 Abarth - shelfer, waiting on brighter days to get a restoration and electrics. (no run condition)

I have thoughts selling maybe my F103LM and get a offroad car like the blitzer beetle or some other brand, also the XV01 Long damper spec would be nice.

or maybe dont sell anyyyything and just get that **** offroad car. :lol:

My Daughters and I plan to do the following over next 6 months:

  1. Convert another 88 Avante to Avante2001/Egress spec
  2. Build an Egress
  3. Build another DIY thundershot based crawler (same as my existing one)
  4. Buy and build a Schumacher L1 Evo
  5. Buy and build a Schumacher Cat XLS
  6. Fit a sand scorcher shell on my modified SRB that currently sports a lexan shell
  7. Repair the King Blackfoot

This is why I stopped replying to the "To-do list" thread, when I sat and thought about it I wrote out a 2 page essay of all my outstanding stuff

I'm just finishing off an XV01 Long Damper

Then I want to move straight on to my Kyosho Outlaw Rampage Pro kit, must go and pick up the paint...

My collection is complete now,so new builds will either be to update the racecars, my son has seen one he wants or just because I want one.

I could see a Monster Beetle, Top Force, TA07/TB05, Sand Scorcher or Grand Hauler maybe happening, but probably not. I have another yacht scratch build to keep me busy, so its up to my son to ask for stuff now

Up next for me from Tamiya will be a TA07RR/MSX or possibly TB05/TB Evo I think - I don't have a Tamiya touring car in the collection at the mo so it'll be a tough decision on what to go for (was leaning towards a TC01 but it's probably not the best TC to pick despite being an awesome looking kit!)

Have also started gathering some DN01 parts and would like to build a not quite but almost TRF spec 2WD buggy.

XV01 might also be nice to do in the future - probably a lot more usable than a standard touring car while there's very little club racing on as well...

... decisions, decisions... :D

I've spent most of this year building touring and M chassis kits (TT02 White/R/RR, TA02SW, M03, M06) and running / maintaining the buggies (Bigwig, Boomerang, DF03). I also built a Monster Beetle, which I didn't enjoy at all so crawlers / big trucks are off the menu

I think I want to do another buggy next, which will mean one of the loft collection I've been stockpiling over the last year or so:

  • Super Astute (most likely, fancy something 2WD and it looks like a beautiful kit to build)
  • Kyosho Turbo Optima Gold (2nd most probable)
  • Top Force
  • Nova Fox
  • Buggy Champ
  • Hot Shot

I've got a few more touring / M chassis in the loft:

  • M06 Renault Alpine A110
  • M07R (Alfa Giulia body set)
  • M08 (Karmann Ghia Body Set)
  • XV01 (Audi Quattro body)
  • FF03R (L&L Peugeot 306 body, if it fits)
  • TB02R (Porsche Carrera GT body)
  • TA02S Lancia 037
  • TT02S (L&L Ford Escort RS Cosworth body)
  • 49400 Vaillant 30th Anniversary 934, but I don't think I'm ever going to be able to bring myself to build it, it's such a beautiful thing

That leaves me with a few body shells that don't have a home; Ferrari 458 Challenge, HPI Shelby GT350, HPI Ford GT40, L&L Mk1 Escort. I'll probably just paint them and swap them around the other kits. Or sell them.

The only other kit I really want is an Avante, so I will be getting one before the Brexit gates come slamming shut and everything gets even weirder than it already is. That lot should keep me busy for a few years I reckon!

As well as my massive Projects list (which I will be updating later today), I have a small collection of NIBs, which I'm trying hard to prevent from getting any smaller as it's nice to have some kits lying around waiting to build.  In the Before Times, I always imagined these kits would be something I'd drag out if I was stuck at home after an accident or severe illness; during lockdown, building kits was a way to keep my hands busy while I was watching my daughter in the house, so they got a bit of a hammering.

Anyway - off the top of my head, my NIB stockpile currently looks like this:

Axial SMT-10 - got this a week before lockdown, figuring I might want something to build if England followed the rest of Europe and shut us all indoors.  I didn't want to build it until I had all the other parts - body, wheels, tyres, solid link set and sway bars, brushless power and servos.  Then lockdown happened and supplies of the critical parts dried up, so I haven't started it yet.  Complete lack of Clod-size wheels and tyres in the UK is proving a real blocker for me :o

MST CFX-W - my main winter project.  As my SCX10 gets older and more heavily modified, so it gets more awkward to run.  I just want a solid, reliable performer that will handle almost anything and always be ready when I want to pop out.  But before that I have to build it.  I'm actually secretly hoping for a rainy Saturday so I can build it while my daughter watches Disney films.

Super Hotshot - unexpected purchase at this year's Revival, my plan is / was to build it as a racer for next year's Revival, so I can then rebuild my re-re Hotshot into the car I really want it to be (which probably won't be eligible for racing).

Jun Watanabe Hornet - I wouldn't normally have bought one of these, but it was a gift from a friend.  I considered building it for my daughter but it seems too rare and special for that.  It might stay NIB forever.

Mini Cooper Rally - this was an instant-decision purchase as soon as Tamiya lost the BMW licence.  Still haven't built it.  I don't usually do boxart but it's such an iconic car, it almost feels rude not to.

Kyosho Volvo 850 - won this in a raffle a few years ago.  Opened it up last year to take pictures to sell it, and found the body has been damaged.  Not sure if that happened before I got it (it's changed hands a lot despite never being built) or if it happened on the way home from picking it up (literally the only time I ever moved it).  Anyway, some damage takes away its value so might be a fun runner (shame it's not eligible for the Iconic Cup as it would be a fun wildcard entry).

Scania R470 Orange Edition - I bought this on a whim because it was a) cheap and 2) pre-painted.  Originally I wanted it to be a simple, straightforward SWB 4x2 rig that would be easy to drive on smaller club layouts.  However I have already robbed the single rear axle for the Drag King project, so now I'll have to build it as a 6x4 (or 6x2) or buy the parts for a single axle installation.  Also I think I have enough tractors for now so I'll probably build it as a rigid with a solid body.

TT01 bare chassis - came to me as an NIB Subaru WRX over a decade ago, I sold the bodyset and planned to use the chassis for another shelfer, but never got around to it.  I've been moving it around in an M04 BMW Roadster kit box for years.  I've already got plenty of plain TT01s so I don't really need another, but it's a potential builder in case I fancy something a bit more modern in the vintage racing class.

CC01 of some sort - I've lost track of my CC01 collection a bit.  I'm pretty sure I've got 95% of a CC01 in the box - I robbed some parts from it to fix a runner.  That said, I probably won't build it standard anyway - it might form the underpinnings of a vintage rally car or maybe a 1:14 dakar truck.

I'm changing tack for 2021. I've only really worked on two cars in 2020 so I  am scaling back to reflect this.

Whilst I have a few kits I could start and plenty of project cars in the garage, I'm going to concentrate on finishing my trail rig.

DSC_0128.md.jpg

It will be 'parked while I work on some Christmas presents for the family  - hopefully developing some building, weathering and soldering skills I can then deploy on the  JK.

In order of which they will most likely be completed:

Traxxas XO-1: needs tires, electronics, and a body which has been very hard to source.

Another crawler: Looking for something in-between my CC-01 and Bomber, Thinking Element Enduro or CC-02

Basher: Most likely to be a Traxxas Maxx, but Arrma is said to be making a new 4s line, so I will wait on that.

1/10 touring car: Since my TT-02 will be either a speedrunner or a rally car in the near future, I think I will want something a bit smaller than the XO-1 for general on-road usage. I'm liking the Kyosho Fazer Mk.2

This is what my RC landscape is looking like at the moment (which is scary considering I started from scratch in December of 2019!):

image.png.4d4e558d11a689d8cbb5cb48ee7e8f19.png

I plan to have all yesses by the end of the year.

That's of course assuming I don't get any more kits before then.

No... really.

I'm liking that spreadsheet, I have a bunch of projects that get stuck in later stages. Good way to highlight that.

I seem to have built up quite a backlog of TC bodies, so I'd have to have a sheet for that too :D

For my next immediate purchase I considered two available options: Avante (at my LHS now) or Turbo Optima (to be ordered by LHS and delivered in 3 days).

I'm chasing the Turbo Optima.  While the Avante is iconic, and I seriously want to build a NIB one day, I think the re-re Turbo Optima is just as much so with its quality and attention to detail.  Bonus is that I already have a decent 10.5t brushless/esc and 25kg servo to drop in.  I'm sure I'll get around to an Avante some day..

I'm about to start an Axial SCX10.3 kit. This one will be built as a relatively stock lightweight endurance trail rig, with very reliable but mid-level electronics. Run time and reliability will be the goals, not absolute trail performance. I've been really getting into endurance trailing lately, and I want something to take on overnight backcountry hikes.

My current rigs are really only good for day trips in the 20 mile range (I can only carry so many batteries), and this is my first Axial, so it should be fun. It'll get a killer light kit so I can hike easily after dark, the ability to carry 10,000 mAh, and, ideally, require little or no trail repair so I don't have to carry spare electronics.

It tried that for my JK but the list of jobs grew so long and I did so many re-works and parts trials that the spreadsheet has stalled! I’ve gone back to task lists. Not as satisfying to look at..

Mind if I steal your intellectual property there fella? I will also be adding a column, "paint bought yet?"  I duplicated a paint purchase today and only realised when I went to hide it from the Mrs and found the paint I bought last month in the hiding place!

I really want to track down an Optima Mid, preferably a Custom (the one with the yellow wheels) like when I was a kid. To be honest, any Mid would do!

Nothing new, but my vintage Grasshopper and Hornet need to be torn down to the tubs and rebuilt at some point this winter after 20 years in storage. I actually have the original boxes for those so maybe they qualify?

They're waiting for the servos/MSC/Rx and other odds and ends to trickle down from my vintage ORVs, but after driving the old Brat for the last few months I'm actually leaning toward getting the GH going, since it has a diff and the Brat is locked.

Before I swap everything around, I need to try the Brat on dirt (it's been pavement only thus far) and decide if it should stay a runner or go on the shelf. It doesn't have enough power or weight transfer to spin the tires sufficiently on dry pavement, so even simply turning a corner puts a lot of stress on the fragile old drivetrain.

Oh and I do have an extra lexan GH bodyshell that I want to put on a hot Hornet chassis, but that's even further down the list unless I happen to find a cheap roller.

Sure thing, in fact I made this sheet precisely because I bought 2 Lunchboxes by mistake . I was lucky though, I found someone who wanted to buy a NIB lunchbox in my office so I didn't lose too much money on that error.

I don't have any new-in-box RC kits currently. They don't tend to stay un-built for long in my possession. I have a few that are in pieces awaiting rebuilding, but nothing that hasn't been touched yet.

And honestly, there isn't much I want to buy, either. I mean, if I were turned loose with a credit card, sure, I could find stuff to spend money on, but there is only one remaining "bucket list" RC vehicle for me, and that is a Tamiya 3-speed of some description. But I'm not crazy about Toyota pickups, and I'm afraid of a rabbit-hole of spending with the big rigs, which leaves the F350 (bleah) or a vintage Blazing Blazer (way too expensive). So what I'll probably do is just buy a 3 speed gearbox from one of the parts-breakers and figure out what to do with it later. I just like to play with gears.

As for projects over the winter, I'm not making any firm plans, but here's what I have in mind:

"Choose Your Own Adventure: The Race Forever" tribute - I've already built the Series III Land Rover; it just needs a couple of little things buttoned up, and some lights and graphics. But the other truck in the book is an FJ40 Toyota Land Cruiser, so I should build that one too, to have the set. Bodies are available, but I think I want to build it out of aluminum and styrene, like I did for the Land Rover, so they match. It will be built on an ECX Barrage chassis, which should work well alongside the Losi Mini Crawler guts of the Land Rover.

RC-ized Monogram IROC Camaro - I was lucky enough to find two of the big 1/8 scale Monogram Chevy Camaro models this year. The red '82 is staying un-built for a good long while, but the black '85 IROC was partially assembled when I got it, and needs some repair work. Since I have two of them, I can't resist converting the rougher one to RC. My current thinking is a TLT rear axle, an Axial gearbox, a long driveshaft, and an RC10 front suspension, all on a custom-made chassis. I'll keep the full interior.

And if by some miracle I finish those, I still have 70 or 80 other static model kits to keep me busy...

You just brought me back like 30-odd years; I remember that book! It was one of my favorites from the 12 or so"Choose your own adventure" books that I had as a kid. It was a race through a part of Africa I believe? I can't really remember details. Thanks for bringing back this memory!
