i think tamiya will bring it back in 06 along with the monster beetle, they will sell like HOTCAKES lol,im wondering how long it will be before they discontinue the lunchbox, you guys think it will last another year in production?

I thought this current run of re-issues was to end with the Top Force, with Tamiya then going on to promite their brand new range of models stating with the New 16th scale Tam Tech stuff.

But, of course I have been wrong before, but it was only that one time.....

I've heard very strong rumours that the re-issue run continues through 2006 and ends with a "sought after" model being released December 2006 in Japan.

I'd have thought that given Tamiya have put some tooling updates into the Frog that will make it stronger (e.g. the change to dogbones and revised shocks) they'll need to get the maximum return from it - I'd be VERY surprised if we don't see one of the Frog based monster trucks being announced at the Neurenberg (yes, I know it's spelt wrong) toy fair in April.

After all, this time last year everyone said "nah, they won't make a reissue Lunchbox"....

who knows for sure but i see no reason why blackfoot and monster beetle dont make a comeback, they will sell like CRAZY for sure,i just think those 2 are perfect 80s classics for tamiya to bring back it would be a very smart business choice for tamiya IMO lots and lots of sales

personally, i think tamiya are more likly to re-release the monster beetle than the blackfoot, as they are still making the blackfoot extream. it would be a bit wierd to have the original for sale along side the longer/wider and "better performing" blackfoot extream.

the monster beetle is such a cool looking retro truck, it would definatly sell well! [8D]

really nice to see the updated drive shafts on the frog re release aswell.

maybe a re release of a frog based monster is being held up a bit because they are working on a stronger differential gear system? [:P][:)]

Yes it could be a bit weird to have the original for sale along side with the new version. But I don't feel that the two kits are connected in any other way then the name, the black body and the size of the tires. On the other Blackfoot releases you could see the resemblance to the original and the improvements.

Also didn't Tamiya still offer the Super Hornet when they re-released the original Hornet?

Personally I think the Blackfoot looks better then the Monster Beetle.

1.The Blackfoot has a better looking body - on the SRB series I think they are equally cool

2.nicer tires - don't like the Monster Beetle spike tires.

3.cooler looking box art - all of the old Tamiya box art is good looking but I think the Blackfoot box is much cooler then the Monster Beetle box.

So I would prefer it if they re-released the Black Foot.

Of course they could do something dull like re-release the Mud Blaster (which use a Brat body). That car I would not buy.

I think the Monster Beetle is highly unlikely (nor the Sand Scorcher) as Tamiya doesn't have a licence from Volkswagen to produce beetle bodies.

True, if they are to re-release a frog chassis MT it would cerainly be the blackfoot. They wouldn't go through the trouble to obtain another license from volkswagen (which rules out the sand scorcher for re-release they would probably do the rough rider.)

I don't understand why this should be a problem. Tamiya has released many RC cars with a Volkswagen body. The Touareg being the most recent (if Audi is considered a part of the Volkswagen group the Audi DTM would be the latest VW car Tamiya released).

Have I missed something here? Are VW demanding a ridicules amount of money for a Tamiya RC release of the beetle?

i agree with acto-tuned on the subject of licencing.

surely there wouldnt be a huge problem in using the baja bug body again[?]

thinking outside of the tamiya box - hundreds of companies make toy cars and models of real cars, and i'd bet tamiya are by far a larger company than many "toy car" manufacturers.

you can go into a pound shop and buy a toy volkswagon beetle for £1, so the license to use the body styling couldnt have cost too much.

Depends whether the cheap chinese factory actually has a license or not. Licenses are usually based on a percentage of the price of each kit, you don't just buy a license for a fixed amount. The fee for each £1 toy could be a fraction of a penny, but Tamiya might have to fork out quite a bit for each kit sold. The Ferrari F201 was more expensive than the F201 kit, even though the F201 kit had the extra carbon fibre print body. The higher price of the Ferrari (and one less body) was to pay for the licence fee.

It also depends on whether VW wants to licence to beetle shape, after all it isn't a current model.

I'm presuming Tamiya had a licence for the Blitzer Beetle body, which was produced until very recently, I can't imagine this being a problem in terms of a Monster Beetle reissue.

Posted

I don't know if they would re-issue a Monster beetle as they really weren't all that great of sellers back then. I could defiently see a Blackfoot release but the body probably would not have any ford logos on it.

Posted

Why not the original Brat?

After all, the Brat is closest in lineage to the frog in terms of design.

This coupled with the fact that they VERY recently were selling the tires (Wild Ceptor) and body (Mud Blaster labled as a Brat.)

Question is, would this be considered a 'sought after' model?

Posted

It would be cool to see either the Blackfoot or Monster Beetle re-released. I can picture the Blackfoot body though without the "Ford" logos kind of like they did with the change on the Clodbuster with the "Chevrolet" logos..

Also if they re-re the Monster Beetle I'm curious if they would bring back the original gold plated wheels?[?]

There is certainly an issue with VW Beetle licenses since VW stopped production of the real thing a year or so ago - since then, almost all the model makers (plastic, diecast and rc) have dropped the proper beetle from the line up. It's got to be a license, or specifically cost of license, reason. The £1 and £2.99 cars are never licensed IMHO, regardless of what it says on the box - I'm pretty sure of this since in the past suppliers have had trays of these recalled and scrapped under mysterious "safety" recalls, when there was no safety issue involved...

HOWEVER, even a company such as VW I'm sure could be persuaded - it's just a money issue. I'd bet that there are negotiations going on at this moment - as to put it bluntly, the Blackfoot/Brat/Mud Blaster might appeal to the collector, but the Beetle (like the Lunchbox) has much wider appeal and therefore much larger sales potential.
