Christmas Car Park Run About Choice TT02 Vs M05

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

My wife announced today that she would like to buy me a new RC for Christmas. Currently I have a DT02, CC01 and a random Truggy that gets bashed by the kids.

There's a beautiful smooth church car park beside out new house and I thought a car park racer that I can throw a few cones out for would be something different.

So I've narrowed it down to a TT02 Audi V8 or a M05 MX5.

Does anyone want to sway my opinion one way or another. Both will be stock except for bearings, torque tuned motor and possibly a set of mini CVA I think I have sitting around.

I like that the TT02 could be fitted with TA05 suspension at some stage down the line (not cost effective, I know lol) or any multitude of options.

And I like the M chassis because it's a little different size wise...

The last touring car I had was a TL01 many moons ago.

Advice and suggestions welcome.

Ta, Chris

Both are good car park runners, but the TT-02 has the edge in a few areas, including but not limited to a wider range of bodyshell options, a wider range of gearing options (which translates to a wider range of motor options), more wheel and tyre options, a bigger selection of hop-ups from a wider range of manufacturers, a wider range of battery options, more common spares and more predictable handling which makes it easier to drive on a variety of surfaces with different grip levels, and more protection for the battery so you can even take it on rougher rally type terrain without risk to your pack.

In short, the TT-02 gives more choice.

The obvious answer is to get both, but if it has to be only one, there is so much more you can do with the '02. I am grateful that I have an M-05 in my fleet, but I wouldn't rank it above my TT-02 - not by a long shot.

I have an M-07 that I use for car park fun. I love it, but I fancy a TT-02 as a fast rally car. My previous TT-02 is now a drifter and I do miss the speed (and doughnuts) of a quick TT-02. So, do get both if you can, but if not get the TT-02 for some fast messing about, or the M-05 for some nice driving.

I'd go M05 for the fun factor.  A TT02 is a bit more sterile.

Oooh that's a tough one, I have both and if I had to give one up I don't know what I would pick. I have learned more diving the M05 and when you get corners and lines right with a FWD chassis its a great kick. Sorry mate you are on your own with that one.

I would also ask your self, will I spend more money on it in the future? and if you are I would pick a TT02 because there is more gearing options and its easier to change. With the M05 you have to strip it right back to get at it.

I'm partial to 2WD.

You want control? 4WD would do exactly what you tell it to do. You are the master.  You want tail-whipping fun? I'd go for 2WD.  With some exaggeration, it will fight you. You will have to wrestle the control from it. It won't let you be the master, unless you prove your skills.  I didn't get M08, because that looks the wild horse I can't tame.  Seeing as you already have RWD, and 4WD, why not FWD this time?  You may get both anyway. Might as well start with something new?

True, you can get a 4WD to give you that same level of 'fun' but only by putting in some hot motor and more powerful battery but then when the car fights you and you lose the crashes are at much faster speeds and often result in damage that would not occur at lower speeds. So a 2WD gives you that fun factor within a speed range that limits damage if things do go wrong. :)

Example, I had more fun running my Sand Scorcher last night in the wet than I've had with any other buggy recently. It was hilarious fun and yet I barely got above 20mph, spent most of the time doing donuts, sliding and spinning and fighting the thing to get it around a track. Far more smiles per mile!

M chassis FWD is brilliant stock if you have a twisty track thrown down. Too much space and they get a bit lost. I’d go M05 and get something to build a basic track. I use old carpet tiles.

Aw wow these suggestions really are not helping lol.

TT02 I would plan on upgrading slowly over time and there seems to be so much stuff you can do with it, TA05 arms etc and make up up to a Type S, I always wanted a protoform jelly mold race shell when I was a kid and the TT02 would let me do that too keeping the Audi shell tidy.

M05 has been on the list for a while too, Im ok with having to strip it down to do any work on it, thats part of the fun. Tail whips do sound fun. I dont have the option of carpet tiles though lol, just a big fresh church car park.

I do have an 8 year old who will want to drive which ever one I choose, so maybe the TT02 will be a little more driver friendly for him... and when he gets the hang of it get an MO5 as well lol.

So I think I am heading towards the TT02.

As others have said, it's a really hard decision and the only right answer is to get both ;)

A 4wd touring car should be in everyone's fleet.  You'll notice a TT02 is a different design philosophy to your old TL01 but essentially fills the same gap in the market: an entry-level 4wd tourer that can handle a variety of driving conditions and be tuned for a variety of racing styles.  They're a great car to learn on and if you wanted to start racing in the future, either indoors or out, you can upgrade the car to a good starting point.

OTOH the FWD M-chassis is great fun, understeery when you've got the power on but teaches you a lot about throttle control to hold a line.  I really enjoy racing my FWDs when I have the chance.  Most clubs have big support for M-chassis racing if you wanted to start that in the future, too.

Whatever you choose, if you have a large car park to use, get some cones (or look at the postal racing thread to see what others are using).  A car park can easily feel too big for a 1:10  on a silvercan.  Look at the postal thread to get an idea of how small a track should be for a time attack, then have fun learning lines, braking points, turn-ins, etc...

And Time Tunnel Models are doing the Audi V8 without the ESC and radio gear for £105! I've got to wait until Christmas for mine, but finally have a kit to look forward to building after a few years away from the hobby. Just need to find all my RC gear that's in storage!

@phiber_optik Did you ever build the Audi? How was it?

Hey, I absolutely did, it's been a great car park racer, built it per the instructions with some bearings and have been using it since with my Son. Nice build, nothing complicated or fussy and loads of options if you want them.
