The never existed Jagermeister Stratos No. 117

Hi folks, 

This is my second RC build (I’ll post the details on the first later on). 
 

so, the project is based on Kyosho Pureten Alpha 3 EP, which I bought in unworking condition without a body shell. 
 

At first, I was thinking just to restore the chassis and put any body shell to use it as a basher. 
 

As you know, the wheelbase of the puretens is not standard (265mm in my case), so I was quite limited in options. In the result, I bought a Carson lancia stratos body. 
 

While awaiting the body, the chassis was completely rebuild, diff gears replaced (I bought another donor GP chassis) and greased with marine grease (Motul). A new futaba servo was installed. The radio and ESC are currently standard but already ordered 2.4 radio and Hobbywing 1060 ESC. The motor is a standard one - Kyosho Xspeed 27T, will see how it runs on a 2s when everything was replaced. And of course the chassis was fully equipped with bearings instead of standard metal bushings. Runs smooth, but need to do something with servosaver plastic o-ring which looks to be very soft causing steering to be imprecise. 

so, the body arrived, already trimmed. Sits not as perfect as Tamiya shells, but will see what will be the final result) 

oh, yes, forgot to mention. It will be painted orange (Tamiya PS7) with Porsche No. 117 livery )))

A bit of progress tonight. Painted the wheels. Did not remove the tires so it was a bit tricky. Nevertheless, happy with the result )

The body looks okay, but nothing close to Tamiya shells which are top detailed. Will try to add some bits to make it look better)))

That's pretty COOL looking!! Quite different from the norm. I really like those Wheels, and you did an excellent job of painting with the Tires on! 👍👍

Well, I have never painted the taillights, so decided to practice on a plastic bottle) not that easy I should say. Need to practice more on paint thin proportion to avoid traces.  

As you noted, I'm not trying to make a copy, but want a car to look more realistic. While working with a body I cut my finger and occasionally found that a medical patch can be used to add some details to the taillights.

Translucent Paint can be a real challenge to Brush on. I've tried for years! 😖 

Do you have an Airbrush? Even the most basic? Spraying the Lens Paint will always yield better results.  OR..... If you're near a Dollar Store, pick up a small 1/2oz Atomizer Sprayer (fancy term for a tiny Spray Bottle!), often used to dispense Perfume. 

If you know someone with an empty Perfume Bottle (must have a removable top).... Clean it, then fill with Paint! 😉  They spray a surprisingly fine mist, perfect for this purpose. 

But if you have an Airbrush..... I just wasted a paragraph! 😜  Or helped someone who may read this at a later date. Either way, Spraying is the only way to get satisfying results, particularly when you shine light through it.

Trimming of the light panel is... difficult. Will try to fine adjust the holes for the reflectors by a dremel tomorrow. Stay tuned )

Like it or hate, but I have installed black can Tamiya motor to Kyosho)))

Hobbywing 1060 esc is next as decided to swap the old electronics including the radio. 
 

Meanwhile, started to detail the body - installed third party side mirrors which were painted matt black before.

Painted the light pod and test fitted the lights. Need another day to trim a bit for better fitment and then glue everything together )

Light pod installed) await for a new transmitter and also need to finish the taillights. Also added some details with Kyosho fine tape and installed meshed grill in front.

Looking good! Considering how its such an important car in rally history and a design icon its a shame it never had a proper Tamiya release.

Thank you! Absolutely agree as this shell (made by Carson) does not copy well enough real car lines and proportions. This is one of the reasons I decided not to paint it in original livery

I was thinking to install a cockpit, but found that the plastic within the windows area is not quite transparent and distorts the light heavily. So, dimmed the windows with tamiya smoke ps paint. Here is an almost final bodywork except some details in the rear and maybe I will add mud flaps (need to study which material to use and how to attach them well as the car will be a runner).

Replaced the tires with pirelli rally replicas. The original tires were looking cool, but had no inserts and the rubber started to crack

Tinted the headlights yellow 

 

And made custom rear lightbuckets

That's looking great. I'm following your building progress from the beginning and was not so sure about the body at first. But you have made a nice looking rallye car out of this.👍

Thank you! At the beginning I also was not sure if the end result will look okay considering the rather abnormal livery as for the rally car))) well, quite happy with the result.

Ordered some hopups for the chassis and a new motor by Kyosho) will continue the thread and keep posted on how it runs.
