MF-01x 959

Recommended Posts

Thought I’d try and do a rep 959

id seen the MF-01x chassis was adaptable enough so got a Jimny as it has correct tyres

no pics of the build but you can build it in 3 wheel base and 2 ride heights

So for the 959, 210mm works best for to the 1/12 scale

Long

medium

short

and of course the kit doesn’t come with the correct drive shaft length so needs to be purchased.

It’s quite a nice little chassis

and because it was fitted with standard springs, I picked up a set of oil filled dampers for about £10

in terms of shells, I’ve ordered a kamtec one and a TBG one.

ive also ordered a standard set of MCI decals and a set of high quality ones.

I’ve also been compiling some bits

original spoiler, exhaust brake lights etc

and some repro driver heads

Some mega cheap white wheels from AliExpress for £8 (same tyres as the tamiya)

And some slightly bigger 12mm hex to push the wheels out 2mm further

Those wheels dont look too bad!

Are you going for the Rothmans livery?

Wheels were under £4 for 4

In order to get the line where the 2 paints would meet,  I needed to dry fit the decals on the outside.

then I could mask the inside with edging tape

Then the full masking

Brave trousers on for masking and spraying that!!!

Haha - what’s the worst that can happen ;)

It’s never easy to spray in the winter though

kamtec window masks don’t fit amazingly but they are pretty good.

i also masked off a few of the bits that would be black

Removed rear window mask, rear grill, front grill and bonnet vent masks and have a coat of black

was worried this would darken the white so I added 3 coats of my cheapo white primer first

I like this a lot. Where did you get the heads from. With the Escort on the horizon open face helmets wanted. Also this body would be perfect for my 210mm MF01X in the post below yours!! Are there any other stickers?

Is there much difference between the TBG body and Kamtec. You chose the Kamtec any reason?

I’ve bought one of each - the TBG version is coming from Canada though ;)

Great looking body shell, good work. 👍Looking forward to the finished car.

Thanks - just got the rear spoiler to primer and give a coat of white then fit and decal up :)

whichever shell I use, I’ll probably sell the other

That looks fantastic!  Great way to have a replica of the iconic 959 that you can run without fear of damaging a treasure.

Yeah - although I prob won’t drive it

i just can’t justify the costs of a real one and to have one in the quality I’d want would be a money pit :)

That's really cool. Everything is so right using the MF-01X chassis for a 959. Four wheel drive and the "engine" is in the right place. Great job on stickers and paint, did the bodies come with a rear wing or is that sourced separately like you have with an original?

Yeah they come with a lexan rear wing but I sourced an original and a repro one

the kamtec one also comes with a lexan cockpit so I’ll look at that too :)

I love this build (959 is the Tamiya that caught my attention in my childhood) and, to be honest, the Mf-01x is becoming interesting to me: it looks tidy and clean without much of the modern complications that make modern rc cars looking like home appliances. Thanks for sharing :)

Thanks everyone - the chassis is indeed simple and effective

the shell is hard work but worth it

And the kamtec shell is excellent quality, as are the MCI decals

Good page for wheel ideas.

I think Lancia 037 wheels sprayed yellow worked well.
