Hard choice for sure! Many candidates of equal glamour.

For me, it's got to be the Hornet: it's the first thing I instantly think of if you say Tamiya. The buggy, the box art, the 5 spoke/3 piece wheels, all of it. Iconic!

I was born in the late 80s

For me it`s the Grasshopper

It would be nice to hear the Date of your Birth when mentioning a Car. Because the older Generation quickly has some other Cars in Mind like a wild Willy, a Cheetah , a Porshe 959 or Sand Scorcher.

The younger Generation maybe has a Fighterbuggy RX in Mind.

Sand Scorcher/Rough Rider, without a doubt the most iconic Tamiyas ever made and the ones that (at the the time) screamed high quality precision engineering which set Tamiya apart from everybody else.

Even into the early 2000's before the re-re's came out they were so iconic they commanded way higher prices 2nd hand than anything else Tamiya had ever made.

I still have my original Sand Scorcher from xmas 1981 (my first Tamiya), albeit highly modified. I still appreciate its engineering despite it being hopeless in just about every aspect compared to more modern buggies. At the time it not only set new standards for RC model engineering but the packaging with the large box, stunning and emotive artwork, those blistered trays, smell of the real rubber tyres and the weight of everything was just so far removed from anything that had come before from any manufacturer including Tamiya themselves that they set a standard that has not been beaten since. Every kid I knew in the late 70's early 80's wanted a Sand Scorcher. It WAS Tamiya back then.

When we got to the mid 80's RC took a back seat and by then it was Tamiya 1/35th Military vehicle models that took over and I spent many happy hours building Tamiya model kits throughout the 80's. The Tiger 1 or the SAS desert Jeep being the iconic Tamiya vehicles at the time. (1982?)

I was born in early 70s my first tamiya I saw running was a box art sandscorcher when they first came out, he let me have a go on it and I knew then that I loved rc

My first rc was a second hand holiday buggy in the very early 80s then a year or so later i got a brand new ford ranger, for me I think tamiya is the sandscorcher

I know what you mean. I built one in the 80's too.  When I found this cheap on ebay, I had to get it for old time's sake.

Such a great box art too.

Cool. The SAS Jeep was the first Tamiya military miniature I built. Come to think of it, it was the Tamiya I built outside of a mini 4wd at that point. I was so impressed with its detail for its diminutive size. I wish I had the time and patience (and eyes at this point) to get back into 1/35 military models. It sure looked neat when I later paired it with a Quad Gun Tractor too.

I never had a chance to built the Quad Gun Tractor. But it looked good. For many years, I thought it was an armored car because it sort of looked like one.

I am sorry you are experiencing vision problems... it's so annoying, isn't it?  On the other hand, I'm glad to know that I'm not alone. Many of us are in the same boat.  We've gone through half a dozen different eye drops and most help only for minutes.

Like they say, growing old ain't for sissies.  (Then again, I'm too young to know who Bette Davis was, aside from that song I grew up hearing...)

@Saito2 yes my eyes are not great either, I'm starting to struggle painting my Warhammer figures now. I do have a magnifying glass but I find it cumbersome.

@Juggular I have the quad gun tractor, it is a nice model, detailed axles, engine etc. Quirky looking. I never did get around to getting a gun to tow behind it. Another favourite of mine was the LRDG truck. I had mine heavily laden with ammo, fuel, weapons and even made my own little tarpaulins and chains etc.

I used to have about 50 Tamiya 1/35th kits, built over 30 years. These days I get my modelling fix from Warhammer. While not having the same level of detail you can still get some nice imposing tanks and their lack of tiny parts makes them easier to build with poor eyesight. :) I have a few Land Raiders plus a heavily modified Baneblade, slightly larger than a 1/35th Abrams or Challenger.

Hornet.

there is a reason (correct me if I’m wrong) that the hornet was one of the first re-re’s

It was the first and it still is the best seller for tamiya.

If i had to pick a vehicle, I'm going to have to go with The Frog.

I still remember my dad taking us to the only store that had one in stock, back when i was 4/5yrs old, and then getting home and "helping" (waiting as patiently as possible) at the dinner table as he built it.

That thing took a beating at my young hands growing up, but never skipped a beat, or broke a major component. I still have it to this day, 30+ years on, and although it runs, i refuse to run it. When my dad passed away, i got the re-re (which actually got me back into the hobby) and that now takes a beating and serves as the OG surrogate.

Outside of this though, i have fond memories of their traditional plastic model kits, and wall to wall shelves with blue and red stars on white boxes facing out at me in the toy stores.

to me Tamiya is all about modelling. The static ones are some of the best in my opinion. So although a little left field if we are talking about RC modelling then it’s got to be a Tank or a Rig/3 speed? I’ve only done the Sheridan tank, big brother to the one above, the others will have to wait but from what I’ve seen are equally impressive models. I think I’m right in saying that the Sherman tank was the first Tamiya RC vehicle

      Hi Jon,
In the linked image, I've simply moved the bar forward until it is centered directly over the rear shock tower (approx. 10.72mm) and kept the same height.  Is this what you had in mind?
