MF-01x Jimny, unending project

Recommended Posts

Guess I’ll start my first thread with this one. I bought it in ‘15 when I was still working for a hobby shop but didn’t get it to the point where it was painted and driveable until after I switched to my current customer service call center job in 2017.

And with a then coworker’s ARRMA

20151004_130812_zpsbxnzywbc.jpg

I eventually bought the current rolling stock, which required some lift and trimming.

20160210_181603_zpsqct7tpfx.jpg20160108_202922_zpssjgsyuiq.jpg

it was at the point it needed paint when I had a change of career and set it aside until that was more stable.

Here what eventually happened, painted the body in a very 70’s Lime Green metallic lacquer from Model Master (works great in lexan!)  with their flat black from the same paint line on the outside for the hood and grill section, and then covered the inside and rocker/flare area in Duplicolor bed liner with their adhesion promoter  to get that to stick to the lexan on the outside, the paint used does that on the inside, so none is needed there. The wheels were shot in Duplicolor’s metal etching primer then color coated in their silver engine enamel, then found out that I should have put a normal primer down over metal etching primer before the color coat.......guess I know better know:rolleyes::lol:

If anybody is wondering where that color scheme comes from......well, considering it’s name and size.........:D

JC4_zpszohm5jh8.jpg
Here’s how it looked done with all but the Aisin locking hub style wheel nuts I had eventually added to it.

I found that the Losi 55t from my Night Crawler BnD (that has had an Titan 21t E-Maxx motor since new) was just as much of a dog in this as well as it was in the LNC and will be replaced in the hopefully near future, just not sure what with so far! I don’t remember which pinion it has, but it is too big for how it currently sits IMHO.  It had been parked for a couple years until I started seeing things about the Trail versions of the G6-01 and GF-01 with the gear reduction hubs that looked like they would fit and will be looking at one of those for a little kitbash with.

Now here’s how it looked when I dug it out a week or so ago. It still has the Losi motor, Traxxas XL-5 ESC, and Traxxas’ basic 2.4 radio and Rustler/Bandit Rx box, basic Savox water proof metal gear servo, silly putty filled diffs and Tamiya’s double cardan CVDs to get rid of the dogbone ejection problem I was having.

001(12).HEIC

001(13).HEIC
Here’s how I had set up the right rear corner to get more droop out of it, just the M-03 ball stud that I no longer needed after putting the M-05 C’s and Hubs on my M-03.

001(14).HEIC

I cleaned up the wiring on it last week, adjusted the toe, then trimmed the front bumper since the right front tire was grabbing it at full left lock.

001(31).HEIC
001(39).HEIC

Here’s the CVDs, sorry about the dust and hair.....

001(32).HEIC
001(23).HEIC

I do need to do something about the tweaked rear body mounts.......got an idea what to do to fix it until I can get a new set of mounts.

001(15).HEIC

I do have a few questions on this platform that I hope you guys can help with.

#1. What is the smallest pinion I can use?  I tend to try and gear as low as possible where I can but don’t know how far I can go here.
#2. I’m currently using a Duratrax 3000mAh 7.2v NiMH pack, but would like to use a 7.4v shorty pack in this and my M-03, but I was wondering if the 3D printed shorty pack retainers for the M-05 fit the MF-01x chassis and can they only be had as 3D printed vs getting one that is molded plastic or machined aluminum for either platform.

Any suggestions you guys would have will be appreciated.

Probably won’t do threads for my Clod or Lunchbox since I probably won’t do much more than axle mounted servos for better steering and separate rear steer and oil filled shocks on both (would appreciate suggestions there too) and the AMPro anti-rotation piece on the Lb.

Ok folks, the Monster Beetle TR and new M Chassis Bones are in and the kit bashing has begun!

001(183).HEIC

To start, Input an oooollldd Integy 55t from the Wheely King that is getting one of the Holmes 45t motors I got earlier this week and tested it, did much better with the Integy 55t vs that Losi 55t I had in it.

001(173).HEIC

001(169).HEIC

001(179).HEIC

Once I got off work I started digging in😁

Assembly was pretty much straight forward and simple, I did reuse some of the wheel bearings I put in it 5 years ago.

001(186).HEIC

001(195).HEIC

001(195).HEIC
Did find some “Hidden Mickeys” in the gearboxes too🤣

001(185).HEIC

Here’s how the Rigjt Rear looked once installed with some butchery of the upright extension and adding a spacer between the wheel hub and locknut since the axles it a lot longer!

001(191).HEIC

001(193).HEIC

001(190).HEIC

I then got the Right Front corner on, the wheels just barely clear the screw heads.

001(196).HEIC

And finally, with the body on it for a comparison

001(189).HEIC

001(188).HEIC

001(187).HEIC

Now I just need to finish the other side and test it out!

It’s finished and running😎

Anybody know of rounded, bolt on fender flares that might work?

Few more pics that will better shiw the added ground clearance.

And finally, a pic of it with my first crawler, a HPI Wheely King  4x4 that was flipped, locked, stretched and thrashed hard!

Ran into a small problem when I took a closer look today, the 1.55 wheels drag on then cases and top screws to the point the paint was getting scraped off while driving it once done.
001(235).HEIC

001(234).HEIC

Same up front too

001(234).HEIC

001(233).HEIC

I tried both a set of HPI Vintage NASCAR wheels that I had put the trucks original tires on as well as an old set of Axial 8 hole beadlocks, turns out the HPI’s just clear and the the Axials do Not due to the design for the beadlock ring attachment on the back sides of the wheels.
001(232).HEIC

here’s what the final clearance on the HPI wheels are like

001(237).HEIC

001(236).HEIC

So..... as of right now, it has a slight.....”skipped leg day” look going until I can get new rolling stock.
001(228).HEIC

I wouldn’t mind keeping these wheels if I can get the tires off (any advise for how would be appreciated!) and get Proline’s 3.85” tall 1.9 BFG Crawler tires since I would have the tire to fender clearance for those now.

Found that Boom Racing offers 1.9 beadlocks that you can spec out the colors, hardware, and hub depth on that are about the same I.D. as the HPI wheels are. Ordered one to test fit with a 5 spoke gun metal wheel face, matte black barrel, black lock ring and hardware, aluminum lock ring, and 1mm offset hub.

001(1).PNG

Once I get it and mount it up, I should know how well the wheel clears the gearbox case and order the other three to match and get the tires too!

If these do work, I want to get some for the Dynahead I plan to buy too and with the exception of the bronze 10 slot face, they’d otherwise be identical to what I ordered for the Jimny.

Ok, I finally for the Boom Racing wheel in and it clears these Tamiya portals nicely! There’s plenty of clearance with the wheel face flipped for maximum positive offset with the thinnest hex hub installed and it looks like the tires will stay within the trimmed stock flares too. I’ll get the other 3 wheels and a full set of tires on order soon as I can afford to (just got home a weeklong hospital stay and now will be on a picc line for another 5 weeks that my insurance has already refused to cover).

On to the pics, starting with the wheel!

I’ve been scrolling through this post off and on the last couple of hours.
im loving this build.

Thanks, hopefully I can get the other wheels ordered soon (just xfr the funds into my PayPal last night) then eventually the tires while I’m waiting on the wheels.  I want to get this running by the time this picc line is out and I’m done with the antibiotics I’m on now so I can actually get out and thrash on it as I would like!

Took it out for a quick trial run, it needs softer springs, but otherwise did well!

Boy that has some ground clearance now. Fitting portals to it was a stroke of genius. I know you can get them by going the VW Trail/Dynahead route but its such a shame they have not released them as a Hopup. I think there are many projects that might be if they were more readily available

The extra clearance is impressive as is the low down power between this and the old Integy 55t I swapped into it. It would be nice if they sold them as hop ups, though not only did I buy the MB Tr to get those, I’m still planning on getting a Wild Willy 2 kit so I can build the rest of the GF-01 into a 4x4 WW2 and use the rest of that as a parts source on the interchangeable bits.........they’ll be getting more out of me that way🤔

Got the last thing needed to get this little rig where I want it!

Made a trip to the LHS I bought the tires and battery for it at to see if they had any springs that would fit it and found a little package of RC4wd 100mm King Scale Shock Springs pn Z-S1117 that has 4 sets that range from very soft to stiffer than what it already it had on it.

001(292).HEIC

001(301).HEIC

I’d swear that these springs were made for these shocks too, they fit THAT good!

001(300).HEIC

Just the softest springs up front is a huge game changer on this thing!

001(299).HEIC

The  with the next stiffer springs out back (had to counter the weight of the rear motor)

001(296).HEIC

Then with the body back on it.......some trimming is needed for the front opening, the tires grab the back part of the fenders and front bumper.

001(297).HEIC

 And finally, the flex pics!

001(37).jpg
001(36).jpg

Will post outside pics next chance I get a chance to take some.

I like how your rig ended up on the Boom Racing website!

It did?! Awesome!   They posted my living room pics from a few nights back on their Instagram account and I sent them a few more to post on there, wonder if those are it then.....

Here’s a test of the new springs vs how the box stock springs worked on these Shocks and on this truck. I’m starting out on the original springs then the RC4wd springs.

Lol... "skipped leg day" look... well said.

I like the paint scheme.  I've been into orange color for about 10 years, but your color looks very good.

Having seen what you've done, when portal gears are available, I want to experiment too.

Thanks for sharing. I might get those soft springs. I have a feeling that I might need them.
