What are your RC plans for 2021?

Recommended Posts

I’d be interested to read what your RC plans are for 2021, big, small, modest or ambitious!

2020 gave even me a window of opportunity to have a little Tamiya time, short lived but none the less sweet 💥

For me 2021 RC time and funds will be very limited, a big family, a house move with a loft conversion and a demanding self employed job means in reality I will be short of cash, time and energy.

However I will finish my Honda City Turbo and then my Wild One with a view to probably selling them, maybe to buy a WW2 and a Blitzer Beetle.

I definitely want to run my Konghead more and test out my lipo batteries this for me is big progress.

I will buy a lot less RC stuff as it nearly always gets sold on which creates unnecessary time consumption, stress and usually a financial loss 🤦

I also plan to learn to solder and to try my hand with a lexan body shell as I have always avoided these.

My RC models currently sit @ 10, 5 vintage and 5 modern- all Tamiya however the draw of the Kyosho Beetle is strong 😉

Other than that enjoy what I have and be grateful for my health and family.

Hi all

2020 for me got me back into rc, i went brushless with my df02 got my sandscorcher running better and bought a tt02 of @toyolien

So 2021 will be strip and rebuild  the sandscorcher with new bearings and new screws bolts etc then paint the body shell

I've got a mk1 escort shell and rs style wheels plus other little bits and bobs to recreate the mk1 I had as my first car so that will need a tt02 chassis for it

And last is a Schumacher nitro truck i bought about 20yrs ago that needs bringing back to life it has a seized engine

I think that will keep me going for a while

Hope you all stay safe and enjoy the new year

Hi Grumpy Pants

I Like the thread

I will want to try and use my Tamiya cars more this year and have fun with them I decided to sell about 19 cars or so to shrink the collection but I still have around 20 left which are all my favourites. So I have decided to keep the cars I have and enjoy them and improve them a bit. The only problem is is there is always a car that catches your eye but I will try to resist and save my money.

I'd like to buy less new or NIB stuff, and more used cars. There are plenty of very interesting stuff on the 2nd hand market. Last week I bought a used 934 Porsche Jagermeister 40th in a very poor condition, and I find it very interesting to discover how the first owner built it and treated it, the mistakes he made, finding out what needs to be replaced or rebuilt, it's a more rewarding experience overall than building a brand new kit. Not saying I won't buy anything new at all from Tamiya this year, but that won't be a priority.

Nice topic.

On begging of 2020 I had big plans on updating my fleet. But that has stopped in February, I only bought two new LiPo batteries and a FF03 steel gear diff. Then Covid happend, lost my job...

plenty of free time meant I can go back to my hobby and make sure all cars are shimmed, at peak performance and I even sold 4 cars...

Lunchbox sold, my T1FK05 xray, my fully hopped up M03 (got a good price of 210€ for it but still miss it sometimes) and sold a day ago my F103LM.

Because of 12months I am unemployed 9months.

really living on the low now as who knows when this will stop, so bite my lip and dont buy anything...

my cars I now own are a F103/F104 conversion, a M05ver2, my shelfer M02 Abarth and my dummy fast FF03.

the F103 is finished all throughout.

rhe M05ver2 will recieve steering upgrades in 2021

the M02 abarth as is

the FF03 will get new uprights

and thats about it... Only... I did not vuy anything rc related in about 10months until this month, O decided to treat myself for staying home and finally finished my quadcopter... bought a raging transmitter a raging expensive modul, a new lipo battery for the transmitter and 1more battery for the quad.  So that means 2021 will be in the sign of quads...

if I get my job back... I am in need of a buggy like the blitzer  or a crawler.

also I fancied a M06 Alfa Giulia

I sold my F103LM yesterday for 85USD and it is in mint condition...seeing  what kind of trash people sell on ebay for 200-300usd is amazing. A F103 anniversary I understand that is rare... but for the sake of it tha chassis is terrible scratched the servo mount is just tape... tires worn out and they ask 200$ for it???

and then I feel bad when I sell it for whats it worth. So that buying used is a bit of a two way street.

Right now I'm feeling slightly pessimistic about 2021 so my answer is "who knows?"

A couple of weeks back (literally a day before the London Strain was announced) several clubs published their 2021 calendars with racing starting from April.  It seems there was some optimism (or at least wishful thinking) that we'd be able to go racing in April.  Well, technically we can go racing now in Tier 3, but nobody is, and we won't be in Tier 3 for long.  So it remains to be seen whether "back to normal by Easter" is based on genuine faith in what the vaccine can do and how quickly we can get it rolled out, or is just words spun by a government desperate to give us some kind of hope.

Anyway, I digress.  At the bear minimum, I'll be continuing Workshop Sunday.  Every Sunday since April 2020 I've locked myself away in the workshop and tinkered on projects all day long.  It's been absolutely brilliant and I've still got plenty of projects to finish, although money is a bit tighter now the wife is on long-term sick and we're not sure if or when she'll be going back.  She wants to start her own business so to remain supportive I might have to back off my own personal spending.  If I can offset that by going racing once a month then that'll be OK, if we're still stuck at home with no cash then things will be harder, but others have been in that situation since April so I shouldn't complain really.

I'll be doing as many events as I can, situation allowing.  I'd absolutely love to think I'll be racing in April and all through the summer but I have to prepare myself for the possibility that I won't.  And that's it, really.  Stay strong and keep busy :)

I will like to build and race more. 2020 was actually a good year on the building part, as working a lot from home, saved me a couple of daily hours, which sometimes were used to build a few kits, that I more or less bought to support the hobbyshops, I ussually buy from. Not many races in 2020, so it will for sure be more in 2021.

Hoping to increase the collection. Tamiya already have a few cars coming out I plan on adding (Escort/Fire Dragon/Fighting Buggy). Hopefully Mr. T will ad more cool cars during the year, and then I look forward to the next Kyosho rere, and maybe we are even lucky enough to get another rere from Schumacher.

This will be my first full year back into the hobby, and there's lots of things to do on my trio of trios (maybe more than 1 years worth!)

- The first trio of Grasshopper, Grasshornet "Link", and Hornet are all up and running again except a steering servo on the Hornet. So I would just like to get those all working and runnable, and I would also like to repaint the GH body this year but I'm still planning out the livery.

- the ORV trio of bRat, Blackfoot, and Frog need a lot of work. Just recently blew up a driveshaft in the bRat, so I'm stealing the BF shafts for it, which means the BF needs a new rear end setup. But at least while the bRat chassis is down, I will have some time to do the long-awaited repairs on its body. Neither the BF or Frog have bodies, so that's something I'd like to remedy eventually as well. The Frog is mostly built but needs quite a bit still.

- I didn't think it would happen, seeing as I've stolen nearly all the bolts from them to build the Tamiyas (and considering their cutthroat business practices), but I got the itch to build up my old Traxxas junk again the other night too. The first thing I want to do is to turn the Sledgehammer into a snowplow/snowblower and then use leftover bits from the Tamiyas to cobble the two Hawks together for some fun, guilt-free bashers.

Basically just trying to get everything running, then making them mechanically sound. I really like the "driving" part of RC, which I never got to do much of in my younger years, so that's my priority. And along the way, I'm also thinking about how to make them look better. I still don't have much extra money for RC, so I'm sure I'll still tinker and fabricate and do my bush repairs the same as I've always done. This is the first year I've actually had more than one car running at a time, so I'm really excited for what the future holds!

For me I don't have rc plans at this moment, The only things I have to do is rebuild my losi rock rey that is in pieces because I have to replace the bearings, and I have  to put my tamiya m-05 together because of small pebbles entered the gearbox and in to the gears bought some hopups for the car but still have to put the car together.

for the next half year or so I do not have the finance of buying new cars or other rc stuff because this month both of my cats get sick and one I had put to sleep and the other one need an operation that was a 1000 euro bill from the veterinarian, so that is where my rc budget has gone to.

I noticed that the past months I did not do a lot with rc, I ran my cars a couple of times  and that was it even  I had 2  cars that I can put together I don't feel like it, but I know It comes back to me.

For now I going to try to enjoy the simple things in life and try to be less grumpie, that is the plan and I wil see how rc cars fit in to that this year, this month I lost my brother in law at the age of 52 year because of a brain tumor, so before you know your time is up.

im waiting for an MST tire removal kit to put soft rubber tires on an aluminum rim set, get a set of blue aluminum set of shocks in and ordered some aluminum alloy brake rotors 12mm hex for the chassis.

im trying to make it a bit more robust without buying too many parts right away. i do plan on buying a new body shell, stuck between a 180sx, s13/180sx Sileighty or ab FD3S, the second one is more elusive to find... when i do get a 2nd nice body shell it will get a fiber tape/shoe glue reinforcement when the paint is done.

i hope i dont damage the M2 coupe body shell too much as i learn to drive my RC car  but i dont mind if it does get a bit of damage in learning (not a BMW fan). i also hope to find time to visit a RC track once the darned virus has blown over.

I've got a few projects I'd like to box off, but my main focus for 2021 is the new Astro track for the Glasgow RC Club.

Grass is cool, but high maintenance and an Astro track will mean more time racing and less on moving track markings ,fertilising and grass cutting, plus less meetings cancelled due to wet weather!! (It is Scotland...🙄)

Its a steep learning curve as none of us have taken on anything of this scale before, but we want to do it right first time. Pulling in the funding for drainage atm, and organising it all ,is a real eye opener!  Once restrictions are lifted enough for us to get to work, we really need to hit the ground running!!

If anyone wants to make a wee donation, every bit helps!

https://gofund.me/77bda9d9

I would like to hold some Tamiya meets in the near future, a bit like the Tamiya Junkies down at Robin hood Raceway (the track we inspire to) as alot of you guys don't want to goto a club,  as you think your cars won't win / you'll get laughed at / not good enough etc etc, but really it's more about like minded RC nuts getting together ,and enjoying the hobby / sport that is RC.

There's a Facebook page, if anyone wants to join.

I don't know. I thought I had it figured out, but then I cleaned and re-arranged my workshop, and changed my mind, and now I don't really have a clue where I'm going. All I can say for sure is that I'd really like another Clod Buster, just to build and keep stock and enjoy as-is. Other than that, I think I'm going to refrain from making plans.

Having run the Dual Hunter and the Hornet today in my muddy back garden both need a strip down, clean and rebuild.

We lost a kingpin at one point, I raided one of the 'spare' DHs that is in bits to keep it going!

Rebuilding the spare DHs as loaners would be good to do in time for the summer, Mrs BC has already promised one of El Kid's mates a go so I'd better finish them.

I really want to finish off my trail truck too but it is too cold to work in my garage just now.

The garage is full of projects but I'll leave it there for now.

What's interesting is when I posted a similar topic about a month ago, I had some clear cut ideas on what I wanted to accomplish. Here we are a month later and half my plans have changed, lol. I don't know what that says about my mind other than its constantly moving and changing,:D.

I haven't a clue for 2021 if it's one thing I've taken from 2020 is don't take anything for granted I'm in the lucky position (for now anyway) that I'm still employed quite a few of my extended family are not now and its obviously worrying times so my heart genuinely goes out to those here on this forum who have found themselves in that position through no fault of their own and I pray for better times for them!

I've got my kyosho tomahawk and blackfoot (xmas presents) to build and my cat xls that need the rear gearbox looking at which any cat xls owner knows is no straight forward mission! After that lot I'm just winging it and see what heads my way?

I want to get. GD-01TR Monster Beetle Trail to kitbash with my MD-01x Jimny and G6-01TR Dynahead to make yet another trail rig out of, axle mounted servos on the Clod and maybe a Traxxas Hoss as well if things work out. But before try for a Hoss, I want to make my M-03 functional again as well as my 2 Wheely Kings and maybe my Losi Comp and Night Crawlers too. Also need to get fresh rubber for the Chrysler 200 I daily too,l as well as install the bigger front brakes, auto start stop spec lower intake manifold and MSD coils (all ready have that stuff) and depending on what I get for tires, those alone could be more than everything R/C combined outside of the Hoss!

I'd like to finish my Traxxas XO-1 before getting anymore projects, but that probably won't happen even though I don't have much left to do on it.

Buy the last few parts so I can start doing silvercan speedruns with my TT-02

I'd like to buy an M-Chassis at some point this year, probably go with an M-05 or 6 since I don't plan on doing any racing.

The only other car I can think of wanting is another 4wd buggy. I really like the Kyosho Javelin, but it's a little pricy for my budget.

Hi Danny,

Keep your chin up mate. 2020 has been a rubbish year, even just with COVID, lockdowns and job losses. When you put on top of that losing family members and pets, its just too much. I lost my dad to Covid back in July and its hard.

As I say, keep your chin up mate and I'm sure all the guys on this forum are here if you need to get things off your chest.

My 2021 RC plans are to get another 2/3 cars in the stable, specifically the M chassis. The reason is i am planning on getting the bodyshells of the cars i owned as a lad and reliving my hooning youth - Clio Williams/ 16v, Escort mk3 RS Turbo, R5 GT Turbo (all for the FF chassis)

I would like to get my hands on the Abarths - the Assetto and the Berlina

I would also like to get my Quick Drive Evo and Scooby back up and running, close to standard as possible. If the electrics/ chassis are no good then i might upgrade and put the bodyshells on the most appropriate 4WD chassis Tamiya do (TT chassis?)

I would like to create a dedicated workspace to leave all my RC stuff, as at the moment i have to pull it out/ tidy away after every sitting and its getting annoying really quick!

A shelving/ showcase area too.
