In December 2020, my wife took a Mini-z which was sitting on a shelf at home and asked me if I could do something with it for my son or if it was to go to the bin...

I did put it back into proper state. But for that I had to search for parts on the internet... And that is where the rabbit hole started, as when you do search for something on internet, you usually find anything else but what you are searching for. Doing those search I discovered Kyosho was doing again the buggies I was dreaming for when I was a teenager...

And then started to think maybe it could be worth to start by a cheap Tamiya buggy, before considering restarting full fledge.

On January 1st, the plan was to build one buggy and see.

  1. On January 8th, I did ordered a DT03, a RX/TX and a digital servo.
  2. Few days later, I built it, with my son looking at what I was doing. He wanted one, and was ready to use his money for it...  We ordered a second DT03.
  3. Early Feb, my son built it, and run it for the first time. Few days later, while we were talking about what he wanted for his birthday in April, he told me he wanted a Slash 4WD (kept note of that - funny enough, I wanted one for me from times ago)
  4. Mid Feb, my daughter started to bug me as well for a RC car... Decided to think about it. I was 100% working from home with plenty of time to spare as not using my car everyday for one hour+ to go to work (and saving money). Decided to order a Turbo Scorpion for me and a DT03 for my daughter
  5. Early March. The Turbo Scorpion was in progress, and notice there was a club nearby organizing a yearly race with Vintage car, with a 540 cup where you had to have GrassHopper chassis with a 540 Silver can to participate. My son liked the idea. I ordered a Hornet and a Super Storm Dragon.
  6. End of March. The last kits were done (except some paint job still to be finished for the Hornet). Had to take care of my son's birthday, and we got indication we'll be mandatory at home until at least mid may. Ordered few kits again. Lunchbox, mini Lunchbox, Slash (2 - one for me as well), SuperHotShot. The idea was to work this out until June.
  7. Early April - one Marui Hunter chassis popping up online on my recorded research... (2 almost complete set came afterwards).
  8. Early May. Javelin in stock again for a few days. I ordered one (yes, cracked) and discussed with my local dealer to get a Turbo Optima (both arrived one the next day, and the other one late June).
  9. Early June, I finished all the kits but did not started the Kyosho's one
  10. Early July. Kids vacation project : a Lunchbox and a Midnight Pumpkin.

Total number of RC Cars at home as of today around 20. And the plan was just one :-D

Maybe I have a little addiction issue :-D

All of the “work at home” days from COVID have allowed me to satisfy many RC desires. I want a new kit, but don’t know which one or where to store it. I think I have writer’s RCer’s block….

I can relate to this, I started lockdown by building a TT02B after a very long break from RC, got in a mood about how poor it was so got an Xray XB4.

The XB4 is really a track weapon, and wanted something for the street and garden (lockdown so no racing), so got a CC02 - and an M07R.

Also got a Lunchbox Mini and an XV-01 (both are still unbuilt as have been waiting for parts...!).

Currently building a Schumacher Mission FT S2 as a break from Tamiya (and wanted to put a Fwd car in the stable) - I don't think my credit card could have survived hopping up an FF03 or buying an FF04 Evo anyway.

And now I've got a TA08 on the way as I restored a couple of my old touring cars recently but can't bring myself to run them due to their age and I fancy a bit of TC racing.

Getting all my old racing kit back a few months ago could be a thread unto itself - lots of restorations in that lot that could take years (RC10B2/B3/B4, lots of T-Tech Predators, Yok MX4, HPI RS4 Pro2, Xray T1, SupaStox and others!).

Covid has been expensive! :D

I also plan to learn to solder and to try my hand with a lexan body shell as I have always avoided these.

“Fear of screwing something expensive up” is the big fear factor on both of these .

I have a relatively easy and practically free practice solution for both :

Scrap. Scrap pieces of Water bottle are great for practicing painting the inside of lexan bodies cutting and trimming are still a little tougher though.
As for soldering, same thing. Practice joining loose piece and ends of wire together to get a technique down

I’ve just been away this week for our 2nd wedding anniversary which was a very welcome break and Tamiya came up briefly.

My wife is keen to put some on display when the next phase of extension work is carried out as she believes the Tamiya I have are good talking points and as they have been an on and off feature of my life for over 4 decades and it seems likely they will continue to be for the next few years as well.

I still have 9 so I will slim down the number of models and the kit that comes with them, putting some on display, have a runner and a project maybe.

2022 update: my container is still a mess! I did manage to find a static 934 shell that I want to fit onto the 58001 chassis I was given, when that will happen, well who knows!

I'm currently building a 1/43rd scale Series 2 Escort RS Turbo model for a mate of mine. He recently bought a 1:1 that he is restoring on his youtube channel (his channel is called Modern Classics). He doesn't know I'm doing this, so I'm hoping he likes the surprise! They are surprisingly hard to find models of unless you get the 1/18th Otto model, which is £200+ these days. I found this one on eBay for £11, it's a die cast version and quite nicely detailed. I just hope my (lack!) of modelling and painting skills do it some justice. I'll post some pictures up when it's finally done......

I also bought a Mini-Lunchbox from Grumpy pants (good to see you again Simon!), still haven't run it yet.....

I am literally fed-up with having nowhere to do what I want to do, so will try and push getting the container tidier, if only so I have a small man-cave and all the things I love around me again! I have restacked a lot of the blue boxes that we labelled up near the front, but I need to restack them into some sort of order, so I can just go to one stack and get what I want, and not have to search through numerous boxes. I also want to take out one whole side of the stuff we have piled up and put some decent racking, so all the loose boxes, boom boxes and other crap I collect can all be put in sight and stored safely. I've had a few near misses of things almost knocking me out! It would be nice to be able to walk right up the whole length of the container without tripping over something, so that's a high priority for me. The real shame is that the container is on a farm, so ideal ground to run some of my rc cars. It's a mix of gravel, concrete and some asphalt, so ideal for most rc cars really. One-day (sigh).........
