kwkenuf 184 Posted January 15, 2021 So, which one would make for the better budget build? I have no experience with either chassis. Which one would you recommend for someone starting from about nothing? Thanks
Fabia130vRS 2098 Posted January 15, 2021 I am thinking about a rally car a long time. Also would like to keep it on a budget. I am somewhat torn between the TT02 and MF01x also... I had once a TT01, done the rally mod to it, same as for the TT02, you cut a bit off the bottom suspension plates and get about 1,5cm more suspension travel. And works ok for offroad, not sure about whats the height in the mf01x? I had a M03 with M05RA arms but thats lower then a modes tt02 I think? I like the m chassis a lot and now a ford escort being sold by tamiya really makes it difficult. i wanted the TT02 and mod it for rally with a yaris wrc shell... but the mf01x ford escort is much nicer... how does a mf01x run on offroad? ploots 185 Posted January 15, 2021 I'm doing a rally car soon and I'm going to use a tt02 with all the alterations to give it better ground clearance
qatmix 794 Posted January 15, 2021 I love a Tamiya Rally car. I have a couple of XV01 cars (Which are hands down the best rally car I have ever owned, destroying the HPI etc), however the TT02 is actually very good as a rally car for the cash. The TT02S is also very good for a rally car base. I am talking about proper RC rally, which in reality is dirt, gravel and slightly rough ground and small jumps, not buggy style jumps and tracks. I did a guide about how to make a decent TT02 rally car a couple of years ago although I have only just noticed its not there. I will upload it again as it was taken down after a cyber attack I would go for the TT02, choose the scooby, Yaris or the Quattro as your starting car.
67CamaroSS 304 Posted January 15, 2021 I think the TT02 is a better option. The MF01 has a weaker chassis, poor suspension and you are more limited with body and tire options because of the M-size. Also, since the chassis and shock mounts are the same pieces, if you break a mount, you need to buy the chassis parts. I don't think the MF01 is discontinued, but the parts are more expensive and more difficult to find. The only thing I like the MF01 for is if you do a 959 Tribute, because of the size and the 4WD. kwkenuf 184 Posted January 15, 2021 Thanks for input gentlemen. I purposely didn't say that I do not plan on upgrades for it. I was seeing I could get either option for $100-$130 fairly readily. The XV01 is easily double that, hence why I am not really considering it. I have been leaning slightly in favor of the TT02, but wanted to see what other opinions were out there. OoALEJOoO 3127 Posted April 25, 2022 I've run both the MF-01X and TT-02 rally cars for the past few years and if I had to choose, I'll go with the TT-02. Advantages of the TT-02: Better options for rally bodies. Being a 1/10, it normally uses rally block tires (70mm) which greatly improves its ability to handle rough ground. Between the larger tires and the larger weight, the drive is much less bouncy. Ability to mount a foam bumper in front. This dramatically improves the survivability of the body. Tires & spares are easier/cheaper to find. Advantages of the MF-01X: Smaller footprint means its slightly better to run on tight spaces. Wheelbase is tremendously moddable if you later want to go this route with a custom built. This video is useful showing how bouncy an M-series car is compared to a TT02 on rough ground. It's a M05Ra and not a MF-01X but the bounciness is similar: Some info on both a MF-01X rally and TT-02 rally car builds on my thread here (you'll have to scroll to page 4 for the MF-01X and page 5 for the TT02):
