It's the same with any 'collectible' hobby - there'll be a few crazy priced specials

Take a look at Star Wars original figures from 77/78 - Mint,  they go for £1200 and upwards and only cost 99p originally.

Original black Porsches (there's been re-released bodies on other chassis) don't come up very often now, so there's no 'set' price for them.

Yup, just pray no one actually buys it at that price, or that will become the new set price, same goes with any speculative item. It's not even in good condition really, I mean at that price point I'd expect it to be absolutely pristine, untouched and kept sealed in a bag from day 1, not scratched and dirty.

However for that price I'd probably try to get in touch with Tamiya first and see if they could work something out, maybe locate a proper NIB item somewhere.

Is it linked to 'Vintage Porsche car brand & everything related' nuts?
Vintage Porsche cars have seen their value skyrocketed for some years now, it appears that some people see this trend for every item related to.

And so is for everything related to famous people (king of cool, anyone?)

I'm sure there was a tale in these forums of one of these kits being sold for £10,000 in the days of 2004/05 when vintage kits and parts were still aplenty on ebay. Pretty sure it was a confirmed sale too.

A Mk1 Hotshot sold for approximately £4000 a few years ago too. The super-rare stuff can still fetch stratospheric prices.

I'm guessing a lot of the new members here weren't into the hobby around 15 years ago. Back then it was routine for vintage kits like Sand Scorchers and Bruisers to go for £1500 to £2000+.

I'm amazed at the prices of all Tamiyas these days, especially well used volume models needing a full strip and plenty of parts - what i would have paid £40-50 for 5 years ago, and then sold for £100-120 (after £40+ of parts and hours of cleaning/reassembly) seem to make £80+ these days.  I wouldn;t mind but a lot of the cheap Tamiya parts suppliers (RCMart, Banzai) are either not around any longer or subject to VAT additions; making a lot of refurbs an expensive business now.

Holy ship!  I felt I dug deeper than what's sensible for my NIB Super Astutes, but combined they wouldn't have secured me a Sand Scorcher.
And this makes the NIB City or Sealed City or what it was called even more impressing and slightly scary.

The last week I've been on the lookout for an Avante 2001 project, fair to say they've gone up quite a bit since I was on the same mission a couple of years ago.

Prices are basically a joke at the moment, You only need to look at the inflated prices of ta01 Escort Coswoths, or tt01/2 with a pretty mk2 Escort body to see that the hobby has well and truly lost the plot :lol:

you can get the odd bargain now and again but you need to be quick, be browsing the auctions/local pages a lot, or have alerts set up.

Or all three :D

It's lockdown that is causing it. Basically people are sitting at home, bored and with more disposable income to spend therefore there is more demand than supply.

It's not just RC. The vintage BMX scene is crazy at the moment too with project bikes that could have been bought for less than £200 before lockdown now going for over £500.

You're right with lockdown and disposal income, I'm lucky enough to be able to work from home sometimes, and was at home most of last year, but I did a couple months at the end which was a 70 mile round trip commute daily. That's a lot of petrol, compared to this month when I've hardly used any...

*opens ebay app*
