Installing and removing CVA shocks

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have been searching for an answer to the following, without success:

My TT02 has CVA dampers attached with ball nuts and ball studs. When changing springs, rebuilding shocks or doing setup work on the car it is necessary to remove and re-install the shocks quite often. It is super easy to just twist the shock at the top to undo it from the shock tower and then "bend it down" to undo it from the suspension arm. Question: should I be worried about deforming the shock eyelets and introducing play if I do that often? Or should I instead unscrew the ball nut/ball stud form the shock tower/arm which is much more time consuming?

Thank you and sorry for asking what is probably a very basic question.

Marc

They are made to 'pop off' like that . The CVA plastic is very forgiving .

I have a gadget for removing ball joints :-

Thanks for the reply. So KEV THE REV I suppose you still prefer using that tool rather than just twist the shock? 🤔

No , not neccessarily . I usually go for twist / lever off , but sometimes the gadget comes in handy and it's good to have there just in case ;)

Oh ffs.

I came on here innocently to ask a question about my VQS, and have a little browse... and now I’m buying more stuff! I need one of those!!! Looks useful for removing steering arms too as I tend to mash those up with long nose pliers....

it helped that where i work we happen to have some scrap 1/4 aluminum pieces of metal. i got an idea to make one myself and it works nicely though the front tip width could use some fine tuning if needed.
