XV-01T Asterion give me some thoughts

Recommended Posts

So after still being in need of a offroad car... I am tempted to sell one of my cars to justify this buy.

but how good is it really compared to the standard xv01, whats the width?

would a normal touring car fit on these?

better then a CC02? or mf01x escort?

I believe it’s the same width as a standard XV01 .the wheelbase is standard touring car size hence the reason it can be used with the rally bodies. The wheels on the Asterion are the same size as the CC01 ones so if your going to put a rally body on you will need different wheels and tyres. Hope this helps. If I get a chance I’ll pop a touring car body on to mine. Maybe later today 🤞🏻

One issue you may have is if the shell is predrilled for say a TT02 I’m not sure if the XV01 posts would line up. I’ll check when I put a body on my Asterion later

What sort of driving do you want to do?  Since building my XV01T I've only used it on short grass and patio slabs, but it excels there were rally cars fail due to smaller tyre diameter.  If you are on light gravel or tarmac then an MF01X might have the edge due to being lower, but I doubt it would be as well-balanced as the XV01T and you could always negate the disadvantage by fitting rally tyres.  I don't have an MF01X but from what I can see based on photos and manuals, all flavours of XV01 are superior in terms of adjustability and design - the MF01X, despite having a following, is compromised by its size and dimensional restrictions and the fact that it inherits much of its DNA from the TL01.

Is an XV101T better than a CC01?  Well, yes, technically, in the same way that a Subaru WRX is better than a Mitsubishi Pajero.  If I wanted to do a trackday or compete in rallycross, I'd have the WRX, but if I wanted to tow a trailer across a muddy field I'd want the Pajero.  Even with the bigger wheels on the XV01T, I'd expect the CC01 to outperform it in its natural environment, which is out on the trails where it's more about scale than speed.  Sure, you could tighten up the diffs and stiffen the springs but I still think the CC01 would give more joy in that department.  The reverse is also true - while you can modify a CC01 for rally duties (I must do this one day!) I very much doubt you'd get it anywhere near the performance of an XV01T on the stages.

I was thinking of the CC02, but its much price-ier

I have bunch of touring car tires that can fit.

looking to run it on any ruff terain and switch from concrete to grass and dirt etc... kids playground par bashing and sort of stuff I have a hunch the electronic can stay clean sort off.

I would probably put in my tble01 with tblm01 8T motor.

whats the biggest pinion it could take? Is the front closer to a FF03 or FF04?

The standard touring car bodies fit the XV01. The wheel size would be the only issue. If you stick with standard touring/rally wheels its fine

The posts are in the same place on each chassis

Recently built one, but converted to rally spec - all I did was replace the bumper that came with the kit with the foam B tree components, and then switched out the wheels/tyres for standard Tamiya rally block.

AFAIK the only difference between the T and standard kit, are the softer grey A arms on the front, and possibly slightly longer dampers, but not by much.

Fits all standard 257mm wheelbase shells.

A small price to pay IMHO

My bad, I mis-read the text :faceplam:

Although I think the same points still apply - the CC02 is a pretty good trail rig by all accounts, although not competitive as a crawler without some work.  Much like the CC01 was but with a solid front axle.  I wouldn't want to make a CC02 go fast, it isn't designed for that, and likewise although you could probably modify an XV01T to be good at what a CC02 does, it would take it away from what it inherently does well anyway.

If you want a companion for walking along the trails then CC01 or CC02, if you want to enjoy grass tracks / going fast on the dirt then XV01T.  Get some rally block wheels and tyres and you can go rallying on gravel and tarmac too.

It did me also, but when I saw the Embie Racing chassis conversion I had to give it a go. Absolutely love it.

Why?

Are you worried about the screws and the extra step it takes to get to the battery? Yes, it is an extra step. The good news is the screws go into replaceable screw nuts with nylon stop ring. So at least for a solution with a screw-fixed battery door it is as good as it gets IMHO.

Or do you worry about the need to stuff battery, cables, and plugs into the tight battery bay? The latter is not really an issue IMHO if you are using a battery without cable and angled plugs. With this setup, the plugs require virtually not space at all and the cables are rather short and fit easily into the remaining space in the battery bay. Ask me for photos if you still need to be convinced. ;-)

Not sure if the same but I built a Rising Fighter with the battery compartment under the chassis and had trouble installing/connecting/disconnecting the battery.  Much prefer my DT02 chassis models.
