This might not be a "thing" anymore, but at one point Tamiya collectors sometimes had a cutoff point where they no longer collected models past a certain point. My personal cutoff point is the first 100 (and, honestly restricted to off-road models too, for the most part). I wouldn't hesitate to add a Mountaineer or Juggernaut to my collection, but at this juncture, I'm only really interesting in the first 100. If pushed and I could trim that to making the Bullhead the stopping point. While the touring car era is interesting to read about, I have no interest in collecting any of it. Does anybody else have a point in the Tamiya timeline where they simply lose interest in the product line (except for a few outstanding examples) and concentrate their collections before that point?

I don't think I've ever had a cut off point for my tamiya or any of my rc I just like em all although I don't go much for on road but I do go for the classic rc brushed motors! I have had a cut off for my other little interest hotwheels for two reasons the stupid crazy times at the moment are making it much harder to go looking for them and they are taking over the attic so 2020 was the cut off after decades of collecting it's no more hotwheels😥

I know that feeling. I have a pretty decent Matchbox/Super Kings collection from my youth. In my 20's I began picking up Hot Wheels and Johnny Lightnings. I ran out of space too:(.

It's a little later for me with Tamiya; I'd go to about 1995 or so. I did really enjoy the early touring car and M-chassis days, and I will probably revisit them eventually. This date applies to RC in general, too.

For my static kit collection, it's much easier: no UPC barcode on the box. So 1983-84 or earlier.

The only change might be a series or chassis pivot vs kit numbers over time ?

Like you, I’m pretty much first a 100 man but - again, like you - drifted to complete vintage 3 speeds (Mountaineer) and the first 20 years of Porsche (latterly TA02SW / TA03RS)

There’s then the odd escapee with more modern Porsche anniversary models to complete a ‘set’ - 30th, Black, 40th, Black 934s 🙄

To be fair, my collection is very personal - which I suspect most are - and driven by building my NIBs in when I eventually retire

So I’m less focussed on future value and more on fun - which investors with a retail cut off might not be 🤔

I don't have a fixed cut off point, I collect what I like. But most of what I like is pre-92, which roughly corresponds to the first 120. But I've also  got quite a few newer models, mainly rally/touring cars from the mid to late 90s, because I like the bodies. And a few special models like the juggernault, because they're cool.

I guess my cut off is around 2002, which is when we saw things like the TA04-TRF, and the F201 F1 chassis cars. My favourite era  spans the TA01, 2 & 3/TG10 MkI/TGX period, but also (for nostalgic reasons) a few of the very early cars like the XR311/ Cheetah, and Rough Rider. Thinking about the TA02/3 era, I just really like the look and complexity of the kits and the hop up parts, the use of carbon for chassis parts, the alu parts, the boxart from this era, and generally the way everything was engineered back then. The TA03 TRF Chassis’s are probably my favourites, given the amount of hop ups that come as standard. The re-released and anniversary models that have emerged since then, but hark back to this earlier period are also of great interest (I.e. Jaegermeister and Black Porsche TA02SW’s), particularly when paired with further original hop up parts. I think the newest non-re-released/anniversary kit I have is from 2010: the TA05-VDF. I think it’s the last kit I’ve seen that had some of the feel of the older ones, and is unusual in design too, so it’s a bit of a ‘modern’ one off in a collection of mainly much older kits and cars, my oldest being an original XR311, which is where I started in this hobby in  December 1981 😊.

I'd say 95% of my collection is touring cars on the TA01, TA02 and TA03 chassis. Not really interested in other chassis. I have a Clod and an Avante but otherwise thats it.

I'm not really a collector, so I just see what takes my fancy and get what I can within budget. 

Wooders' post, although in nest, rings true for me as I've been priced out the market for a few things now which is disappointing, not because I can't afford it, but because I refuse to pay it. So I rarely pick up new stuff, plus I have no interest in TRF kits or expensive rere's.

Regarding years, I have a soft spot for 1987 - 1994, which is when I left school and discovered evil things like going out looking for women and alcohol lol

Funny thing is i came back to Tamiya last year to help keep me "stress free" during lockdown, then I see people selling body sets for £250 :rolleyes::lol:
