2 different XV01 kits, but same result?

Recommended Posts

My good friend @KalEl63 and I both decided we want to build XV rally cars (Lancia’s as it’s the coolest body suitable in our opinions). Then almost on cue Tamiya announced the Long damper Spec kit. He managed to nab one but the local distributor ******* up my pre order (still coming apparently ) so in a desperate state I grabbed the Lancia kit. Both will be built to the LD Spec, with a good amount of hop ups as well researched by @KalEl63. Here’s our starting point

Not going to be a step by step build pics wise, but will highlight all the hop ups, and the milestones as they are achieved.

So here’s a start of the build/s (we started the build in my hobby workshop), and the first hop ups are used fairly early in the front gearbox assemblies

Mine will be using this motor, His will be using a SuperStock, will be an interesting comparison when they run head to head

This part is only applicable to my build, to bring it to the same spec as the LD kit

And front ends complete (minus Motors, we’ll get to those later)

The LD Spec kit comes with a blue motor plate, whereas the standard just has silver, but at least it’s alloy

On to the rear ends and the Hop Ups continue, Pulleys and the LD Spec shock tower for my kit

And that's the rear ends completed, this time it's my kit that has some hop up blue bits B)

I have to thank Dave for the Shock Towers, when he started accumulating his Hop Ups, the LD Spec kit hadn't been released, and I didnt order them as I was expecting a LD kit myself, being a great mate, he let me have his parts for my car, much appreciated

I forgot to add that we used some metal shims from xray to replace the well known weak NN4 parts in the gearboxes.

The build continued, again with some hop up parts:

We decided that the Carbon reinforced suspension pin parts will do the job rather than going all out on the alloy parts

50893572326_c43809038b_k.jpg

50892857973_cfa2f2b6e2_k.jpg

All those parts allowed us to get the front gearbox assemblies and steering mounted onto the chassis

Both @KalEl63 and I agree that with these hop up parts, this is a very high quality and enjoyable build process. Lets face it, who doesn't love a Tamiya Hop Up Part Header Card?

Couple more Hop Up parts gets us to a chassis with both front and rear ends connected by a Hop Up belt

So this is where we sit at present, waiting for a day soon when we can get together again to continue the builds, and get some paint laid onto the bodies

This is where our builds will be different, I’m going for a 13.5 brushless set up

Whereas @KalEl63 is going for the SuperStock 23T

50935414482_cf328e09b0_k.jpg

we are catching up again tomorrow to continue the builds so more progress will follow

I will be following your builds closely, I really would like to get an XV01 kit myself.

Can you tell me where you can find the metal shims you used in the gearbox to uprate some of the weak parts?

Can you say more about where you used the X-ray shims? I am having trouble inside the gearbox with the nn4 parts and the pin stripping inside the main gear... thanks!

@KalEl63 found the X-ray shims, so I’ve asked him where he got them, but I know we had to also use some 0.1 and 0.2 shims to get everything buttoned up nicely. I’ll update soon, but I think X-ray 358040 looks familiar. (Wish I photographed them, but clean forgot)

So we caught up again yesterday to finish up these rally cars, so a few more pics, first up was shocks, and yes, that’s right, more hop up parts :o

50937816373_8758a0b850_k.jpg

TRF501 Front spring set for the front, and TRF201 Front spring set for the rear

50937816343_1de4c2a079_k.jpg

built using the included machined 3 hole pistons, AE green slime on the o rings, and filled with AE 27.5 shock oil front and rear. I must say this is a very nice set, extremely smooth action. All fitted up on the chassis’

50937816313_eaf9f9458c_k.jpg

50938506456_446ccc8f75_k.jpg

We then installed the electronics and I’ve hit a snag with my build, between us both we didn’t have a sensor wire long enough, so that is on order. Quite a fiddle job getting it all buttoned up with how this chassis is laid out, but got there in the end. (Sorry, no pics of the wiring)

then we grabbed the Hop Up stabiliser set, including the stopper set, would’ve been a good idea to grab this way back in the build process, as the front end basically gets disassembled to fit the front bar but oh well, live and learn

50938614782_b54608405b_k.jpg

got them fitted up, using the softest “pink” bars front and rear, and basically the chassis’ are complete, with alloy 5mm hex’s and wheels/tyres installed

50937816193_2ea298030b_k.jpg

50938614667_15eb3e91a8_k.jpg

Next up are the bodies, we got the paint laid down in the morning, so as they would be ready for detailing by the time we finished the chassis work. And while we had every intention of completing them, I just couldn’t stay any longer at @KalEl63‘s place as the day had flown by, and I had some “chores” back at home that I had to get done.

The bodies fitted up, we went for a “team mates” livery here with @KalEl63 being number 3, and mine number 33. We were unable to finish these together as we ran out of time as I was saying, so together pics will follow when we can next catch up.

Another interesting point here is my body was part of my kit, whereas Dave’s was bought separately as a spare part. Now you’d think everything would be the same, but no, my window masks were individual windows on the side, but Dave’s was one big side mask. And then the stickers, Dave’s were all pre cut, and mine weren’t, which made my process very long. Additionally, my sticker set didn’t have the Michelin stickers. Luckily, I had purchased a bodyset as well when I was expecting a LD Spec kit myself, so was able to pinch the Michelin stickers from that set. I would’ve used that pre cut set, but I didn’t take them with me, and we did make a start on the body detailing while at Dave’s place, so I had to soldier on with the non pre cut set. So here’s the individual cars ready to rally

Car 3 (Dave’s):

50940230861_6c90e55957_k.jpg

50940230736_b51af4c5d5_k.jpg

Alternate wheelset with soft rally blocks

50940230796_dd1dbec443_k.jpg

50940230616_5bde483124_k.jpg

Car 33 (mine):

50939889743_0b609d25dd_k.jpg

50939889678_d3fc1c2c94_k.jpg

with the same alternate wheelset and soft rally blocks

50939889688_eccff552c0_k.jpg

50939889598_d9f53f27c4_k.jpg

Car 33 is sitting quite high in the rear, but there is no battery in the car to weigh it down, ride height will be adjusted and set once we get them going. We will also trim down the body posts once we sort out how much clearance we need.

Big thanks to @yogi-bear for the custom 3’s and 33’s to let us achieve our team mate livery.

Heres a look at the Hop Up header cards stack

50940584271_9c34d0f836_k.jpg

We will next get some pics of the cars together before we get them dirty, which will result in some action shots too

@ewant81 and @smirk-racing, the spacers you want to replace the NN4 parts are either Wrap up 0036-55 or Xray YX353381. You’ll also need a pack of 4mm shims to button it all up nicely. Hope that helps

Yeah we shimmed between the beating and replacement NN4 part. Depending on your gearbox you’ll need to shim between 1-2mm each side to take the sideways movement out of the gear
