Just noticed the hornet has the same axle style as the lunchbox, the shaft that moves up and down in the front... is there the same problem with this model with it slapping up and down? I haven’t seen a 5th shock mod for this or read about one.... why don’t they use a heavier spring on that shaft to keep real tension on it pushing down? Geeeeez

You can do the same 5th shock mod as the lunchbox but even better is the ampro adapter

I’ll find a place to zip tie that front shaft down.... what are some of the other inherit issues with the hornet... maybe I should have researched this before the build haha. It would most likely just link me to this site anyway tho. This ones got sealed steel fast eddy’s bearings & a sport tuned 23T mtr right from the beginning.

Now your opening a can of worms 😂

mill wait for someone else to post a link to some hornet information as it’s been a few years since I last ran mine. Loads of mods if you want to go down that route but I didn’t go over the top because I like the character as it is. Bump steer etc.

I’ve modded my lunchbox some... 20T mtr, oil shocks, lights etc.... this one to be honest besides the sport tuned mtr and the better bearings I’m leaving as is.... but real annoying stuff like the diff cantering up I’ll sort out on my own. You just run in to other issues when you start modding stuff like for instance I put 85mm oil shocks on the lunchbox... front camber was so bad it needed to be sorted out so I added disassembled the fronts and added a spacer inside but now it’s rock hard in the front cause the coils were stiffer than stock already and compressed and shortened now by like 1cm... the rake was pretty intense so I lowered the back with internal spacer also to lessen that. Now the whole suspension is a little stiffer than I like... probably install the lighter stock coils now to these oil shocks to sort that mess out... point is I’m leaving the hornet as is if I can, you open a can of worms like you just said. The next buggy will be a Kyosho beetle or Scorpion that won’t need modding out of the gate.

Another question for whoever owns a re re hornet..... what battery you guys using? I have a couple NiMH 5000 mah’s they seem a tad long to fit in there.

My onyx 5000 is too fat and long, but my onyx 3000s fit. They are tight though.

I have an old grasshopper with a re re chassis and I have this issue with my 4200 batteries. The 3000 fit right in but I assume that’s because it a different manufacturer. This is the one that fits perfectly

It'll basically end up as Grasshopper chassis with oil rear shox & 540 . If you want that then you could get the GH rear axle holders B10 & B11and lock it off so it just swivels with no articulation .

The battery door is know to slip out at times as they get more worn . Different battery packs fit better than others mainly due to the size of the caps being used

Ya I’ve heard about the battery door... guess we’ll see what that’s like when I get to it. Is B10&11 in the kit as left over parts?

Are those parts leftover parts in the kit for another application? B10&11?

B10 and B11 are the Grasshopper gearbox mounts, and they will indeed be left over (not used) on the Hornet since it has the other slider mounts.

You can drill out the hole on the gearbox nub, and slide either a piece of strong wire or bicycle brake cable through, then just anchor it tight on either end and the gearbox won't slap, even without the side springs installed. I haven't tried the Ampro brace or 5th shock mod but this works great for me. Still plenty of articulation, and the rear shocks actually work how they're intended. Lower down on the thread, ddaenen has posted pics of a similar vintage upgrade kit from You-G.

A little L bracket to centralise the front of the rear axle bar.  I find these work best with a soft rear suspension spring. Standard hornet damper and spring works well for me.  The picture shows a grasshopper 2 setup, hornet version just needs the L bracket 4mm longer to locate on the metal bar.

Ya I just looked there’s nothing leftover on the B tree now except the round wheel ends that get locked to the axle with pins..... that’s it. No B10 or 11... the hornet re release B tree doesn’t even have a B10&11?

You're building a rere? We're in the Vintage subforum, friend ;) (not the Re-Release Discussion forum)

Anyway, my original Hornet had the same B parts tree as the Grasshopper, literally identical. B10 and B11 got used on the Grasshopper, but were replaced on the Hornet by D11 and D12. Guess nowadays Tamiya is chopping B10/B11 off at the factory to sell separately as spare parts.

For batteries, my 3000mAh NiMH fits tightly but ok, and my 5000mAh NiMH is a much tighter fit. Larger mAh cells tend to be ever so slightly longer.

Haha I thought all the Tamiya legends are “vintage models” are they not?... anyway sorry only been here like 2 weeks I’ll get the hang of what goes where. I’ll figure something out with that axle, same issue on my lunchbox except it doesn’t seem as bad as those light springs on that shaft seem wayyyy lighter on the hornet, they don’t do anything. I like the ampro brace but I’m in Canada and it’ll probably take 2 years to get here.
