Yea that threw me off, when their touring car tires are about $20 I was hoping their smaller tires would be in that range too.

S-SPEC tires are good too if you can find a set.

Any recommendations on m chassis wheels for track? I am using kit wheels which i am happy about, but curious if there are any recommendations…

The kit tires are very low grip but usable; the car if just slow through the corners. I prepare the front with SXT3.0 on my M-05 which is really mandatory in my opinion.

The Shimizu tires are apparently an order of magnitude better but I have never been able to find them anywhere in the US. There are a few places that could ship them at an insane cost to me but even with these Shimizu's have been Sold Out everywhere for the past year at least. I would absolutely run Soft front Medium rear if I could find them for my M-05.

The Rush stuff seem interesting but I haven't really been ordering from RCMart as of late... difficult to accept their price and sales methods once you start using PJ! 😅

All the above is applicable to the small diameter tires (55mm). In 60D Tamiya have some good tires and they are readily available here.

Here's my finished XM1S.   No rubbing of course, and drives awesome.  B)

If anyone wants to see how I did the checkered roof, please check out my Stories on instagram.  It will be up until tomorrow as they auto delete.  Body mounts, seat back, roll cage, fog lamps, muffler are all scratch built.

Was able to find this one from Uk. https://www.rccarshop.co.uk/ps-sm-g-shimizu-treaded-tyres-pr-for-tamiya-mini-medium-p
though shipping is 30 pounds… I kept debating if i want to buy it or not, but i can get more than twice the tires and wheels (tamiya 60d) for the same or less cost.. so..

Nice find (assuming that's a trustworthy store) but I agree at 30gbp shipping for such a tiny item it's hard to justify. They only have mediums and hards but I am sure the mediums are already way better than the kit tires.

If 60D is an option for body you are using then the Tamiya ones from AMain are a no brainer 🙂

Team Powers are said to be good as well.

If I  am out of Shimizus next yearI may try a set of them.

Sweep are also often  mentioned , but they are like hens teeth here in Norway.

Rush, Volante, Team Powers, Sweep are all good choices for slicks. Price wise they’re all between $32-$36 for pre-mounts.

I recently picked up Volante 30 and 36 from TQRC and plan on testing them this weekend.

Shimizu was acquired by Schumacher in the UK. They only Mini tyre they continue to produce are those 60D thread pattern. So that’s why you’re seeing them in the UK. The rest of their Mini tyres are fine.  The only other Shimizu tyres that remain in production by Schumacher are F1.

A shame, as I'm being told that hens teeth are actually very grippy!

I actually ran my M05 last night and it is quite obvious that I'll run out of rubber pretty soon. I am keeping kit radials for the shelf and burning through kit slicks at the moment. So I might give a try to the the Team Powers, let us know how yours perform!

Edit: do I understand correctly that the Team Powers are the small diameter (55)?

And thank you @Raman36 for a useful list of tire options 🙂

Majority of after market tyres are 55D. 60D are uncommon. Aside from Tamiya, Shimizu are 60D, Ride has a set that are 60D with low profile side wall. Thats all I’m aware of.

I did see some Ride marketed as "round type" that I suppose are these 60D with low profile sidewalls. Seems like a recipe for a smaller contact patch, perhaps useful to racers experiencing grip rolling?

For a while we had to use that tyre for our regional Tamiya races. Believe they’re called inch up? They’re not my favourite. My expertise is they work primarily indoors.

M02 is ready to run… I won’t expect m08 like performance, but it would be fun to run both at a track(first gen rwd mini vs latest gen rwd mini).

i think tt-02 steering slop is cute compared to m02…

Do you mean that the M-02 steering is actually better than that of a stock TT-02? I was really on the fence to scratch my vintage itch with a M-02 Boxter at some point, but I wasn't sure about the steering.

In any case I have only ever heard and read good things about the M-02 👍

I can't find tie rods for my M03. I bought the tt01 hop ups but they were only 40mm and way too short for my M03 so I stuck them on my tt02 where they fit good. Would the DT02 tie rods be too long? I can find those in stock and I want to keep it all tamiya.

haha i meant it is even more sloppy than tt-02…. Initially thought maybe because of metal rod connecting two bell cranks(?) but the actual posts that bell cranks are mounted have lots of slop. I may be able to reduce it by adding some shim(?) .

Though i am still very excited about running it. (Also enjoyed building unique design)

Worst case, if you can't find something fitting, you may be able to fabricate some out of M3 threaded rod and plastic ball sockets.

I tried the Tamiya 55D slicks on my EVA foam test track.. meh.. nowhere near the grip level of the PitShimizu.

However I have no choice so decided to get like 25 packs.  Will run on my 4WD m-chassis.

Yeah, like it's comparable to a 6 year old used and dried out PitShimizu's.  lol  I'm going to see if I can rejuvenate (more like melt the top surface off) the dried ones as some of them still have some meat left..

I tried the Tamiya 55D without inserts too to see if I can get more traction, but it only gave me more squirm.. lol. pretty helpless tires, but I can still drive on them on my XM1C.. just not as exciting as it should be.

Comparing my high traction tires on my Mini-Z that drive no issue on this surface, I would say the Pits are about 30 shore where Tamiya is about 50.. so for casual driving on a 4WD, it's sort of okay, but again, not exciting.

Next up, going to dump out the front diff oil on my Sabre 4WD mini to see if I can rid some of the understeer on this surface and then work myself back on the oil weight.

Tyre prep products / traction compounds like SXT, TDK etc, put the oils and minerals back into tyres and soften them. I would just caution o making sure you fully wipe them and they’re dry before you put on the foam track you have. These compounds are more for asphalt / carpet.

I use SXT on the kit tires. I let them sit wet for 15min and they are initially slippery; then I wipe and scrub them with a clean rag and they become much tackier than without prep after another 15min or so. I can tell the difference because I run the same tires front and rear but only prepare the fronts.

I think tamiya 55d radial is slight better? (I just touched them and feels slightly softer than slick?)

I have both and I think it's the same compound. For that matter it's the same compound as regular touring size "racing slicks", "wide racing slicks" and "racing radials" and probably others that I don't know. I'm saying all this by touch and feel right after opening a new packet 😅 One thing is that these low end tires are sold in non-sealed packages so older stock could be dryer then newer stock.

All that being said is possible that the threads could help with grip on certain surfaces, beyond their scale looks. I found them possibly better on dusty surfaces. But it's so hard to know for sure without turning laps for hours and timing myself which I don't usually do (I hate the voice calling out my lap times in Laptrax!).
