TB-02R not TB? One kit, two builds

Recommended Posts

I had to unscrew both gearboxes from the chassis to create the flexibility to get the new prop shaft in, but got there in the end. Much better!

Then back on with the upper braces

And now back under its new shell, ready for cosmetic surgery (stickering) over the winter months

So, this thread:

  • started with a TB02-R Carrera GT
  • That got upgraded so much it became a TB02-RR
  • There were so many standard parts left over I was able to build a complete extra TB02, which I sold
  • I've now also replaced the body shell!

So now I've got a TB02-RR with a Mercedes AMG-GT3 body shell. Absolutely nothing to do with where I started!

That job lot of parts also contained almost enough bits to build another TB02. And the Carrera GT shell is immaculate, having just sat on the shelf for a couple of years. So the plan now is to build that, put the Carrera GT shell on it, put it back in its box with its manual and sell it on as a shelf queen.

Looking really good mate

Thanks mate. How are you getting on with yours, didn’t you end up with a whole TB02-D instead of a new tub?

Yeah I got the TB02-D with the plan to use that tub to rebuild using some new bits and pieces. And then a new tub came up for sale. Lol.

So I rebuilt the TB02 using some after market hop ups and now I'm going to build the TB02-D to a top spec some I've finished collecting parts for it.

You wouldn't happen to be selling that front diff with the reinforced joints would you....?

I think I'm going to keep it just so that the TB02-R is complete or could be returned to stock, if you know what I mean?

Though I might change my mind....I'm not sure yet 🤷🏻‍♂️

Really not sure, I really wasn’t forcing it. The diff screw got as tight as you would expect but the ring gear would always slip. The joints were never tight enough against the diff plates, and I took it apart and put it back together again four or five times until the joint eventually just gave way 😦

It looks almost burnt, like it was a friction failure. I was trying to use the wrong diff nut holder (I didn’t have the A5 part until @svenb sent me a couple of his spares) so that might have been it, or maybe the joint was faulty. It definitely wasn’t just a case of superhuman strength though 😂

A final (!!) bit of fine tuning on the TB02-R chassis, having finally tracked down the correct damper cylinders...

spacer.png

Meaning I could replace the 53571 set that I built it with...

spacer.png

And go fully blue! The cylinders didn't come with retainers so I had to 'borrow' the ones from the 53571 set to keep it all correct and proper

spacer.png

While I was in there I also switched all the turnbuckles to blue too

Thinking about it, this TB02-R really should be in my bits-a-build thread!

This thread started with a NIB TB02, for which I bought so many parts that I was able to build a complete TB02-R and still have the original TB02...which is now for sale as a new built shelf queen! So the kit that inspired the thread will soon be gone, leaving me with the bespoke TB02-R! I am not wise...🙄

Just to finish this thread off...

The original TB02 Carrera GT has now been sold

The multiple parts that were originally bought to upgrade that kit all came together to form a fully blue TB02-R, with a few upgrades over and above kit spec:

  • blue aluminium steering
  • blue aluminium suspension mounts
  • blue aluminium upper arm mounts
  • blue aluminium front one way
  • blue aluminium rear uprights
  • blue aluminium motor mount
  • blue aluminium servo mounts
  • blue aluminium HT servo horn and cap
  • blue aluminium front body posts
  • reinforced rear diff joint
  • Evo III front and rear carbon damper stays
  • Evo III carbon upper deck
  • Evo III carbon steering link

And now, finally, the body shell has been finished too! Tamiya's AMG GT3, painted and decorated to replicate the Team Black Falcon Bilstein livery entry into the 2016 Nurburgring 24Hr race. Well, it had to be blue, didn't it!?

The livery stickers were created with the help of Nath at MCI 👏

(yes, I know the wheels are on the wrong sides, I just didn't notice until after I had taken the photos 🙄)
