4WD or RWD? Escort MKII?

Recommended Posts

I got super excited when I saw tamiya are doing a 58687 Tamiya Ford Escort MkII but read its 4WD which has confused me as I thought the MKII in real life was a RWD car am I wrong?

If so any idea why Tamiya would release a RWD car as a 4WD car?

The majority of MKIIs were RWD as this is how they were manufactured, but there is quite a trend in the fullsize world to convert them to 4WD based on RS2000 or Sierra parts - there are even a couple of companies that offer the conversion commercially. So if scale fidelity is a concern, there are a good number of 4WD fullsize precedents.

+ Tamiya have never been that bothered chassis accuracy. The actual car represented by the model is as you say rwd but as @TurnipJFsays many 4wd versions especially in Rallycross

As Busdriver says - it's never bothered them before. The Group 2 VW Golf, 58025 (released nearly 40 years ago - wow!) was RWD, when it should have been FWD.

Same with the 911's Tamiya do, 934 , 993 GT2 , the early one they do, all should be RWD but are 4wd. Well my GT2 isn't 'cos i removed the drive to the front.

It’s quite easy to convert it to rwd but also you must realise that it’s rear engined as well🤪

For what it’s worth they also had a FWD Mazda MX5

For a few moments I read that as ‘Mazda had a FWD MX5’  :D

As Bus' suggests, it's very easy to build the MF-01X chassis as RWD if you want - just leave the prop-shaft out (and don't bother with the front diff either - unless you'd like to quickly swap between RWD and 4WD from time to time).

The MF-01X is a very versatile chassis concept - being essentially a TL-01 style backbone but with the option of many different wheelbases to suit a range of body-shells - from 170mm right up to 257mm.

I think it's a great platform for more on-road/rally car based builds.

I have the MF-01x Rally Beetle.  The motor in the back is already a plus for realism and by reading the comments above, I'm wondering if I should switch to RWD to finish things up.  I'm not over-the-moon thrilled with the chassis/handling as-is.  First step is lowering it a bit to get a better stance and add 3mm wider wheel hex adaptors to get wheels out towards the fenders a bit more as well.

Actually there were a lot of 4wd beetles produced during the war. Also the Kubelwagen though 2wd I believe had portal axles?

Sorry should have added a lovely looking beetle. I went the Herbie route with mine. Locked the rear diff and left the front open. All change now as have bought the Escort mk2 and my original chassis has been shortened to mid size with a Jimny body and locked diffs. Going to set the Escort up so I can run the beetle body on it with minimum changes. I really like this chassis. I’m not saying it couldn’t be a whole lot better but hey we just love a Tamiya 😍❤️
