HI

I'm interested in Electric Drag cars. Big in USA at the moment. Anyone using Tamiya as a basis for no prep drag class?

What chassis, motors would anyone recommend? 1/10 most common are Traxxas slash and Associated Team DR10. As I live in UK these are scarce and parts need to come from USA. I would buy a Drag body and work out a way to mount.

Looking at a Formula E Gen2 as the base model?

Thanks

The drag cars are all based on 1/10 short course trucks which are much larger than the Tamiya 1/10 onroads.

So the drag bodies from Proline etc will not fit at all, same goes for the current wheel/tyre options.

Those are made to fit the Traxxas/Associated cars and won't fit on a standard Tamiya.

For example the DR10 has a width of 272mm, Tamiya TC-01 is 190mm
The DR10 has a wheelbase of 322mm, the Tamiya TC-01 has 257mm

Wheels for the Tamiya are 26mm diameter, for the drag cars they are 2.2inch or around 55mm.

Traxxas should be pretty good available worldwide and that would be my first option.

I agree with @Yonzariq - Traxxas models and parts are as well stocked as any other brand in the UK, you shouldn't have trouble finding a donor car as a base to build on.  The specialist drag parts may well be US-only (it's the same with most monster truck parts :( ) but that will be the same if you go Traxxas, Associated or Tamiya.

Another potential donor is Arrma - they fid in the same scale and performance bracket as Traxxas, so there must be something suitable.  It depends if you want to follow what's already been done or do something different.

If you really wanted to stick with Tamiya then you're probably best sticking to Tamiya's interpretation of 1:10 scale.  I'm not sure if there are any 190 or 200mm funnycar bodies but there are some nice hot rod and musclecar bodies out there.  You'd have to seek out some Hoosier style tyres (I'm sure there's a company that sells slicks for WR02 wheels, somebody posted a modded WR02 here recently with them on), or do what I did and sand the chevrons off some TLT tyres - if you're going this route I'd recommend a big rig rear axle as it's narrow enough to get the fat wheels on without blowing the 200mm width.

This link is the start of my drag truck journey - 1:14 big rig dimensions approximate to 1:10 touring dimensions so you could do something like this:

If I was going to build a drag car from a Tamiya chassis, I'd use a CC01 chassis converted to RWD, with a big rig axle and modded tyres as per the above link.  But it would be about scale looks instead of performance - I wouldn't want to race it competitively :o

I have thought about using a CW-01/ hornet axle and a custom gabbed 4 link to attach it to a chassis

Advantage would be tough, cheap, easy to build and would put the weight of the motor right on The wheels.
I have run 2s brushless through a MP gearbox with no issues, so I think the gearbox is up to snuff for drag racing

( Some may argue and that you need “more” )

It wouldn’t be hard to put putty or a spool in to give a limited slip or locked diff either.

Disadvantages:

Limited gearing options ( unless you made or got custom motor mounts)

I don’t know if my experocenwith the gearbox being “tough enough” is indicative or just a personal anecdotal fluke.

Some clubs rule may dictate a short course base IRS rear end and not allow a solid axle .

26mm refers to the width, touring car wheels has a diameter of 52mm.

Interesting project, I built a Slash based drag car last year but a Tamiya based one is intriguing.

I'd be looking at a 2wd off-road car as a donor with a custom stretched chassis and one of the Proline bodies, this will all be easily available in the UK.

As for wheels and tyres, Slash beadlocks with Hoosier slicks would be my first choice, other than this there's a few on road choices that would fit said beadlocks.

If you want to get into racing rather than just getting the model for fun.i would check if there are any other like minded people local OR even in the UK. The UK is so small compared to the US. I don't even have a "local" race/club for any racing class.

Really like the Fox Body on the DR 10 by the way

I did one with a TA01/02. Looks good but won’t be competitive due to limited drive ratios.  See here

I don’t know how easy it is to get Traxxas parts out there but I think the slash is the way to go.  Easy to work on and very durable.  Check out my Slash conversion here

A drag car is on my project wish list,  but personally don't think a tamiya is ideal for the job.

My interpretation, it would need to be RWD, fairly long wheel base, Mid motor layout, plenty of gear ration and diff options plus a multi plate slipper. I considered using my old Schumacher KF2se, bit my daughter has bagsied that for her first race car, so more likely my current Schumacher Laydown, once a new car comes out.

After you've bought the Tamiya E Gen2 ,messed about trying to fit bodies/motors/ elecs etc etc, you could have bought an Accociated RTR Drag car, (which looks like my mid motor theory is wrong....🙄)  with change, and been out racing 🤷‍♂️

Kamtec has a decent selection of bodies that would look good in drag:

I'd venture to guess that a touring car could be a contender for the drags.  The Hoonicorn is hangin' with the big boys...1100hp Chevy Nova Dragster, Big Block + Slicks Vs Ken Block's AWD Mustang // Hoonicorn Vs the World - YouTube

Hoonicorn dips into the 9's - (9.9 still quick!), but the big boys are dipping into the 5's in the States (keep an eye on the speedo....😳)

I think the Uk's Andy Frost, still holds the speed record @260.4 mph though......

Thanks jonboy.  I think Proline just released an 80's Camaro for drag cars so this look would be easier to do on the bigger/ longer chassis.  Only problem I see is finding a wide enough light bar.  Even this one was almost too narrow.
