Yes and yes... Grasshornet (bits from both), and they did... but today the rear wheels were bald Kyosho Optima!

Why not? Doesn't do any harm, saves cash and the buggy feels and drives differently while going bald! 😄

On crawlers, whenever I feel like it. On touring cars, when they look like they'll fall apart next run. Off road cars get new shoes when they stop working properly, and the old tires get run on pavement until there's nothing left. Light runners get new treads when they fall apart!

Some of the more hardcore crawler guys I hang around with have literally hundreds of scale tires on expensive aluminum headlocks. That's pretty rich for my blood; I guess that collecting wheels and tires is something that they enjoy.

I hadn't given this much thought but I've seen people slice tires down the middle to narrow them... no experience with it but I suppose Shoe Goo would work?
