Original Sand Scorcher / Rough Rider motor worries

I am getting close to finishing the renovation of an original SS / RR chassis and have come to the motor. I have read that the old black endurance motors fit, but I ha e found that it only fits with a bodge as the motor cover doesn’t align correctly meaning that the rear guard doesn’t fit.

So - my question is - what motors will definitively fit in the original gear casing without modification?

I have read that the sport tuned will, but have also read that it is only the original sport tuned.

Hoping for some guidance to get this old car running!

Only original 540s - although I thought that included the old Red / Blue hop ups ? 🤔

The Sport Tuned will only fit if you grind down the internal motor nubs in the gearbox

Its then a tight fit - usually forcing removal of motor stickers, grease + grunt ... or the end bell sits proud and cracks the plastic case when you screw it down 

Removing the nubs is a simple job with a Dremel but not original + clearly no going back 👍

Thanks - I’ve just seen a photo of a silver can sports tuned in an original gear casing - I’ll give it a go.

I ran a 540SD "black" rewound motor in my original rough rider. But after I trashed enough bodies from high speed crashes where the car tumbled for 15-20 feet, I took it out and sold it to the next victim.
