After I got my 58036 Audi I was realizing how similar to the Wild Willys #1 the Audi is. So I ended up getting sucked in and purchased a mostly complete example on eBay. Everyone please welcome my wild willys  to the fleet.

I just realized none of the batteries I own are the old hump back style. So I need to figure out if I can source one that fits, or do I build one?

So over to the non working shelf while we get this car sorted.

I ordered a 7.2V hump pack for my vintage Sand Rover. It came from this ebay seller: https://www.ebay.com.au/usr/component-shop?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2754

This is the link to the battery: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/7-2V-Batterie-2200-5000mAh-Subc-Sc-Premium-Course-RC-Nimh-Paquet-Custom-/363258983075?var=&hash=item9340f85f3e

The style you want is called the 'Frog' type - thats the hump-pack. A bit confusing as it seems to refer to the car 'Frog' instead of a battery pack style.

Since its original release back in the very early 80's (82?) I never took a blind bit of notice of it just wasn't my thing! The only time I took an interest was on its original debut and on the news George best was in hospital and they interviewed his partner/wife at the time outside the hospital and she had a present in her hands which was the tamiya wild willy and I remember thinking "what is that" remember no social media so magazines and going to local hobby shops was your only source of information! Anyway roll on a few years ago and I seen this for sale very cheap and thought I'm going to see what this was all about and considering its knocking on 40 year old design its absolutely brilliant! So I stand completely corrected in my original thoughts on it👍I completely stripped it to clean and just have a look (because I've got no instructions) on its design?........I just love the rat look not to everyone's taste though!

Thanks. I assume this is the one I want?

I just asked for a shipping quote  and I’ve noticed you can’t easily buy these style batteries in the states

I think thats the one, the picture looks right. My French is limited to 'escargo' 'gascon' and 'merci' so I'm not much help with the translation! By the way I'm in Australia and they shipped pretty quickly; it was also in the early lockdown in March 2020.

I collect Wild Willy’s myself and unfortunately have not been able to find a clean original humpback by Tamiya.

I bought a preassmbled hump pack from UK which was $55 or so shipped, but decided to make more on my own using sub-c Tenergy sourced from Amazon.

Problem with the UK one was the shrink wrap needed to be cut to fit under the body and the wire take off is on the wrong side

With the wires and Tamiya connectors I assembled, it came out to about $30 each.   These work great and a perfect fit.

Other projects are far enough along and I have secured a humpback battery pack.

I tested it out in my Audi and fits wild Willys perfectly.  So it’s time to focus on getting this guy on the road. I would have left it green but I’ll go with this color since PO decided to paint this Wild Willys

Speed Control is in route so servos in next, grease the gearbox and it will be yeah Party!!  Wish me Luck!!

Today was my wild willys first run. What a fun buggy!  Still waiting for Willy to get here from Hong Kong and now I need a shapeways order to arrive to keep running it (servo saver)

Great to see another WW getting the attention it deserves! Also, now you can add missing parts, re-mount those tires that are backwards and make this puppy shine :D

So aside from needing a servo saver what did you think of how it ran?  Their is a lot of great Simensays parts on shape ways for the Willy.

I’ve run my LWB WW1 a handful of times. It was a super wheelie machine. One good roll and I put it away. Even though it’s my runner and not my new built shelfer, I still don’t want to mess up the body.

I thought it ran fabulously. So much faster than my Audi Quattro Rally 58036 with its big tires, big tires that I will be flipping around soon.

Are the tires still backwards?  I flipped the rears and left the fronts

Congrats on the build!  That's a cool color.   I use those classic blues on my Mini Cooper and LandCruiser bodies.

The tires are backwards, they are sand tires that cup the surface so it should point in the direction the treads would dig into the surface.

Good news is I got in touch with the reproduction tire folks in HK and they are running another batch soon.  Also highly recommend siemensays M38 wheel covers!   I have several of them on my various Willy's.

Yes. I’ve check the manual. You are correct. I’ll need to take the rubber off the rims. And I’m watching the HK seller for restocking
