Farm King!!! My third Tamiya build

Recommended Posts

I'm so excited about this!! The addiction for Tamiya models has come on fast and strong - I've gone from none (no RC models at all!) at the start of this year to 3 by the end of this week, plus a Traxxas Stampede! 😆 At this rate I'll need a second home just for RC cars! 🤣

My boy has just turned one and absolutely loves all things cars and tractors. He loves watching me run my RC cars and shouts "brum brum" to encourage me to keep going. I've been hankering after a wheelie rig for a while, a mate has a Midnight Pumpkin and it's awesome, so when I randomly found that there is an RC tractor in the Tamiya line up, and it's a wheelie rig, I just couldn't resist. Helps that it was an absolute bargain too! 😊

I've downloaded the manual already (the body looks like a right nightmare 😔) but there doesn't seem to be any guidance on hop ups as I've seen in others. So, some questions before the build starts please!

Bearings - is it 16 x 1150 I need? I've seen conflicting information on 16 or 18.

Shocks - I don't really want to run the standard friction shocks, but can't see any info on what length they are. Can someone recommend some upgrade shocks of the right length please?

Any other upgrades worth doing from the outset?

Thanks all!

Hi @taffer, thanks for the reply! Much appreciated. I'll have a dig around on that website 😊

If you have a pre-painted body and driver for sale I would be very interested! Can't stand the cutting and masking! 😆

Do you know what the shock length is please? 53619 seems to be in very short supply. I'd like to get something soon so it doesn't hold up the build.

Another question for the collective - is there a supplier of hex head build screws to replace the Tamiya cross head ones? I've seen this on eBay but I'm not filled with confidence that they're a direct replacement...

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tamiya-WR-02-Farm-king-High-Quality-Stainless-Steel-A2-RC-Screw-Kit-/224414014975?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286

Any thoughts?

Bearing kit purchased and I've placed an order for the 53619 kit from Japan (thanks @taffer!). It might take a while to arrive, so I'll crack on with the standard shocks and then upgrade when they arrive 😊

Kit should arrive today, I'm very excited!!!

I personally wouldnt do that because the friction shocks are attached with tapping screws and ball connectors are machine thread, so it wont be such a tight fight...but its upto you!

Ok good tip thank you. My mate and I have just bought matching kits (Neo Fighter with CVA shocks and brushless motors) so that might now take priority over this, but we'll see.

It's arrived!!! Woo hoo! New kit day is the best! 😁

First time I've ever ordered anything from Japan and I love the little touches - weird little dog eraser freebie and of course the newspaper packaging 😊

Waku Waku Selection sounds pretty darn tasty! 🤤

Also my first proper artwork box, I absolutely love it, it's truly magnificent. Wonderfully nostalgic in a way I had never expected.

If you are building a Farm King, don't forget the most important hop-up... googly eyes!

Me too Bunty, me too!!! But it's completely your fault that it might be delayed thanks to what may be arriving tomorrow.... 😄

It's the WR-02 chassis. Same as the Wild Willy and that crazy type 2 camper thing 😁

This chassis is so much fun.
Mine was an Expert Built bought used . I’ve only added ball bearings and run it on 2s Lipo .

I like that driver. I want to get him and put him in something. Who is the co driver?

Update time!! Shocks have arrived from Japan and with everything else now here, and my journey with the brushless Neo Fighter now at a happy place (a temporary lull!) it's time to crack on with another build. Woo hoo! 😁

Now this is technically my fourth build as the Neo Fighter jumped the queue, and I feel like I'm learning a little bit more with each build. So much so that I've gone completely rogue and off manual with the build order! 🤯😆

First up was to switch in the Torque Tuned motor that came with the Neo kit. Love a free upgrade! I also opened up the gearbox and replaced all the bushings with bearings. Wish I'd taken a photo of that, but got carried away as usual! You can just make out the metal of the bearing poking out of the driveshaft hole, where previously white plastic was showing.

Impressed with the grease applied at the factory, it feels like different stuff to that supplied with the kit. Also good to get a steer on what they apply as a bit of a guide to volume to use going forward.

Next I put the wheels and tyres together. No reason other than it's fun and one of my favourite bits ☺️

Really random wheels in this kit. So weird to have different size rims inside to outside!

PXL_20210504_113249667_copy_1008x756.thumb.jpg.36bcabed1bc4f3592a04e3792d7f88f7.jpg

You can see the difference when you look down the front tyres...

All together and glued on.

PXL_20210504_174812896_copy_756x1008.thumb.jpg.0e93bf55f01f203f7fb0d001d1ef3e47.jpg

I continued my rebellious ways by building up the CVA shocks. This 53619 set comes with an interesting selection of bits - the favoured red o-rings and incredibly smooth piston shafts, but then the green diaphragms.

PXL_20210504_183139364_copy_1008x756.thumb.jpg.c7799e7c6f5f95566c5881de17cdb4f5.jpg

I'm definitely better at building shocks now, these are the smoothest I've made by far. This is the fifth set of oil dampers I've built now and these are just lovely in operation. Et voila! As if by magic, four built shocks 😊

PXL_20210504_190509901_copy_756x1008.thumb.jpg.e84f9727523d8b76916c01f8f5cefae2.jpg

I went with the three hole pistons, the supplied yellow oil and the kit springs. They're very stiff springs, but the operation is nice and supple. Keen to see what they're like in use.

Now my rebellious streak comes to an end and it's on to the build proper. Only a couple of photos here as I've gone by the book so not much of interest to share...

PXL_20210504_202750267_copy_756x1008.thumb.jpg.51d332f0d3dbcb6c8a20b5d5f174bafb.jpg

Rear end and wheelie bar built. Impressed with the metal drive cups and shafts. Assumed they'd be plastic so that was a pleasant surprise.

PXL_20210504_204328074_copy_756x1008.thumb.jpg.4b6f851d20de798adc6b1e541f8ec5cd.jpg

Chassis halves together. I've gone for an Etronix 9kg metal gear servo, first "fancy" servo I've tried so interested to see how it compares.

And that's where we end for tonight. An enjoyable evenings' tinkering! Any tips or advice to share at this point?

Another good evening of progress. I absolutely flippin love this thing!! It's just bonkers in such a wonderful way.

Got the chassis all together and the shocks installed. Took the spacers out of the front shocks as they are a touch long, so the spacers aren't required.

PXL_20210505_103221144_copy_1008x756.thumb.jpg.aec59ded7964533a97f6e01129e84784.jpg

And once again got carried away with myself so didn't take enough photos, so here it is all done!

PXL_20210505_181714805_copy_1008x756.thumb.jpg.591a73f009416ce8ed8122b81b11b2cf.jpg

How cool is that??

I opted for the longer front bumper, my reasoning is that it looks to offer more protection for the front wheels. Given this is supposed to be for my son, I'm hoping that's something that will offer a bit more longevity for the front suspension!

PXL_20210505_142233908_copy_1008x756.thumb.jpg.2d1d5d6be2ce3756da19648489c5c4eb.jpg

Next up is body cutting and painting, something I'm really not looking forward to. I bought some specialist Core RC scissors, but after persisting for three bodies, I have to recognise that they're junk. Any recommendations for really good scissors? A lot of fineckity bits on this body so I'd like to start with the right tools!

Ball connectors better to fit the shocks, less wear and tear of and when maintenance comes....although better to buy 8mm long ball connectors for lower arms, the shorter ones can pull out of the softer plastic arms

Thanks, already installed! ☺️ That 53619 came with ball connectors in, so I used them straight away.
