Tyre options for G601 / WR02 wheels

Recommended Posts

I know that most g601 and many wr02 models come with the same wheels in a range of colours. But the Tamiya tyres for these wheels seems very limited. There are the standard looking tractor tyres, the variant with extra pin spike (Heavy metal dump truck) and then ≥ what?

  • Do Blitzer Beetle rear tyres fit?
  • The wheels seem to be 2.2 inch diameter. Does this mean they will fit any third party '2.2 truck tyres' such as those listed here: https://wheelspinmodels.co.uk/c/130/?cs={105%3A[394]}
  • For my current project, I'm looking for a set of tyres for these wheels that are a 'buggy' looking as possible. Ideally like a classic Avante/Thundershot Super Gripper, or perhaps like an Avante 2001 / Manta Ray spike. Any redcomendations for something like that?

Cheers!

I won't have time to check mine until tonight, but I'm pretty sure the regular G6-01 / WR-02 wheels are not 2.2, but a bit smaller.  IIRC they're the same diameter as the Lunchbox / Pumpkin.

I *think* the GF-01 heavy dump and trail beetle use full-size 2.2 wheels, I'm not 100% sure as I don't have either model, you could probably find out by scouring the part numbers from the manual then searching online to see if they're the same as those listed for the Monster Beetle or Wild Dagger, etc.

Now in theory, if you went with regular 2.2" truck wheels, you could fit whatever 2.2 tyres you wanted - the range is huge.  I've not tried 2.2s on a G6-01, I don't know if there's enough space between the middle and rear wheels.  However some 2.2 tyres have a lower profile, so rolling radius may not change much.  There are both 2.2 crawler wheels / tyres and 2.2 monster truck wheels / tyres, so if you go this route, check what you're buying before you buy.  IMO most model shops don't have a reliable way of filtering the wheels / tyres you want so you have to scroll through pages of crawler stuff to find the odd monster part.

OTOH if you wanted something buggy-looking, consider the Comical Buggy wheels and tyres.  They're not cheap (especially if you need enough for a G6-01) but they are designed to capture the iconic buggy appearance.  I was told the comical wheels won't fit G6-01 tyres so logically the reverse would also apply, i.e. you can't put comical tyres onto G6-01 wheels.

I know I've seen a few G6-01s wearing slick tyres on stock wheels, I don't know where they come from, I haven't seen any buggy-style tyres but there might be some specialist suppliers from China / Japan.

Thanks @Mad Ax, this is good info. What a shame that 2.2' tyres don't fit. Options very limited! Might get a pair of 2.2" wheels and tyres and see whether they go on without fouling things at the back (looks like about 12mm between the model and back wheels with regular wheels and tyres).

Cheers

If I've got time later I'll put my 2.2 wheels and tyres onto my G6-01 to see how it looks, can't promise as I've already promised a few other things tonight :o

The heavy dump takes a lunchbox size tyre/ wheel, so does the konghead.
