What kit to buy next...

Recommended Posts

I currently have a Hornet, Lunchbox and ‘98 Escort and I’m starting to look what to buy next.

Obviously there is nothing you can buy in the U.K. at the moment due to the complete lack of stock.

I really want a decent spec Tamiya buggy to drive and not just be a shelf queen, what is the Dark Impact like? When I say decent spec something sitting above a TT-02 chassis and costing around £200 for the kit.

I’ve also always wanted a Monster Beetle just for nostalgia purposes but the gearbox issues put me off.

Dark Impact is a good shout. Theres a couple of recent threads on some upgrades to do to the diff and its worth getting the slipper clutch hop up. It comes with bearings already which is a bit of a surprise as there are kits from Tamiya that are twice the price that still come with plastic bushes.

The only problem with it is that its old now and the third party support for it is non existant so if anything breaks you are at the mercy of Tamiya spares supply network.

Thanks for the advice! Let’s see what comes back in stock this month, that will probably make my mind up.

I really like my Dark Impact, it isn't a straightforward kit to build and bash though. You need to look after the diffs and adjust them regularly. It seems like you already know this, so it shouldn't put you off, however, I would reccomend a Terra Scorcher or another buggy from that family. Lots of upgrades, adjustability and pretty solid (apart from the a5 part) from the box.

Thanks, I never considered a Terra Scorcher. I will add to the list.

Modelsport says they won’t have stock until the end of July!

I have Tamiya's pink Neo Scorcher (TT02-B) and it's a fine machine for just screwing around.  Not sure if that is anything of interest, but just wanted to toss that in there.  GL with whichever chassis you choose.

Any of the re-release 4WD buggies would suit your needs, I think. Either the old Hotshot-series (which also includes the Boomerang and Bigwig) or the newly-returned Fire or Thunder Dragon, or Terra Scorcher. All good builds, all good runners.

The TT-02B isn't hugely impressive in stock form, but it is cheap and has loads of hop-ups available that address most of its shortcomings. If you get a base spec one and fill out the rest of your budget with hop-ups, that might give you what you want?

My last build was a Neo Scorcher TT02B which I turned into a bug. Great fun to build and good to drive. Quite like the look of the Fire Dragon as well. Good luck

Does it have to be 4wd? If not, have a look at the DT03 buggy. You can get the Neo Fighter for £95 on Modelsport at the moment and it comes with CVA shocks and a torque tuned motor in the box. At that price, adding bearings and whatever hop ups you want gets you a very cheap but hugely fun buggy. I've just added Blitzer Beetle wheels with Schumacher tyres on mad bull front axles and a 3300kv Hobbywing ezrun motor and ESC and it's absolutely fantastic.

No doesn’t have to be 4wd, key thing is I want something that drives more grown up than the Hornet.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far

DT03 is definitely that! It's a brilliant buggy. So capable, strong and unbelievably quick on brushless. It's also fantastic on the standard torque tuned motor if you prefer brushed. Absolute bargain at the moment too!

For me it would be the DB01 or Top Force, but both are near impossible to find. The Top Force Evolution is on its way, but that will be more than 200quid. Any of the DF01 chassis are decent though, the Top Force is just the best of them with chassis plates not a plastic tub, adjustable upper arms etc.

I wouldn't bother with a TT02B, just about any rerelease is better and you'll spend a fortune on upgrades and it is still a TT02B. I have a couple and they have their place, but really they are sacrificial cars for my son and his friends so the good ones don't get ruined. I even bought cheap controllers for them

The DT03 is interesting though, I don't have one but they are proper buggies rather than a touring car turned into a buggy so should be good. If 2wd is ok, there are probably some Super Astute kits still around, they're  a great runner.
