New Forum?

There are a lot of semi-repeat posts regarding brake fluid, gearing, how to microwave a cat etc.

How about a locked forum; 'GETTING STARTED', where only chris/admin/the internet pixie can copy forums that contain enough info to be considered a definitive reference?

Fantastic idea.

Maybe call it FAQ's or technical tips. So that it's obvious that if you have a technical question you can read this forum to find an answer before making a new thread.

That said, the idea of a locked forum for reference of most FAQs sounds interesting. I can do it easily - people still won't read it before posting the same question in 'general discussions'

Anyone got any thoughts?

I was thinking that calling it GETTING STARTED may point newbs in the right direction.

Some of the responses to repeat questions are slightly 'impatient' to say the least, and you can't blame newbs for not knowing where to look.

I think the title is the important thing here. Otherwise people don't know that answers to their questions are in there.

I think if it was more obvious that the forum contained technical help specifically then it would be the first point of call ANY technical questions.

"Getting Started" would'nt be too bad.

Maybe even point out to visitors of the site that they should search before asking. I guess if the search facility was more obvious then it would direct people that way. A few people have expressed that idea so maybe there's something in it.

Maybe a intro page when you enter the forum, writing about reading first the FAQ and searching previous posts before you post a question, with a check button at the bottom, "I have read and understood it, don't show up the next time", like in some programs.

How about a animated hex-wrench shaped mascot which would pop up and say stuff like..

'It looks like you're using the forums. Would you like help?

o Get help with using the Search Function

o Get help with stripping paint

o Just use the forums without help'
