my 1987 clod buster restoration

Recommended Posts

so i thought i would start a restoration thread on my 1987 clodbuster. i recently bought the car on an ebay buy it now for £105 delivered, which i was more than happy with. it came from the original owner who said it had been build but not used.

unfortunatly it wasnt stored in the best of conditions for the past 30 odd years, something had dripped over the body causing some of the chrome parts to tarnish, and loose the chrome finish. but overall a great base for a restoration project.

i was planning to leave this one for a while as i have a few other ongoing projects, but after having to look at it most days i decided i had to make a start, and get rid of the dodgy paint job at least!

here is how she looked upon arrival

so, after some advice on here i decided to try oven cleaner on the body, which did absolutley nothing! fearing all was lost i followed more advice and used brake fluid, thinking in no way would it work, and it did!

was a challenge to keep manouveing the body to keep parts submerged, took around 3 days in the end, but got there in the end..

found some old ford sunburst red in the garage and thought i would give it a quick covering to see what it was like, unfortunatly this threw up two issues, the paint didnt cover some of the small areas of paint which were left, and also the red was way too orange!

so i bought some red primer, re finished a couple of dodgy parts and gave it a re coating in primer. i have today picked up some red paint, and will apply this tonight, hopefully this red will be more red!

as she currently sits right pic is in the red primer.

its not perfect, but it will certaily do untill i can source a replacement.

also some new bumpers arrived, off to halfords this afternoon to get another shade of red for the body

Nice purchase! Great job so far on the body. I have a spare clod grille that's exactly like yours, and I wouldn't mind trying a molotow pen, I've just heard you cannot touch the paint after?

Looking forward to your progress 😎

hi, yeah the pen works great. I did have the odd finger print on mine from touching it, which I went over again. I think if you leave it a few days before you touch it they are fine. Just seem to take a while to fully dry.

So, first part of the restoration complete. New bumpers, new repel decals and it looks like a clod again. I’ve ordered some new tyres as the old ones are split, when these arrive I’ll strip and clean the chassis, then it’ll be just about done
