I have been out of the hobby for several years but I really believe this is the ugliest model I have ever seen, and I will repeat it until the end of the universe, even if this idea cost me the ban (I was administrator) from the Facebook group Tamiya Legends by the other administrators.

What a curious ditch to die in.

This is the info and pictures thread BTW - there's a more general thread for whining about the price, battery access and aesthetics.

Wow so much hate for a toy car? :o No wonder the die-hard Tamiya fanboys will attack you for this, just out of principle. I'm just really curious what gets you so deeply emotional about the matter?

Personally, this kit doesn't matter to me at all. Zero interest, neither like or dislike on my part (TBH: that goes for the vast majority of their kits as well).

Although I started in this great hobby with Tamiya, only very few of their models will always have a place in my heart. But I really cannot imagine a) getting so riled up on the looks of some RC kit and b) feeling the need to tell all the world about it constantly (or until "the end of the universe")...

I can neither confirm nor deny that I put my pre-order in quite a while ago with Fusion. :D

Even with the discount that still seems quite spendy @Busdriver, where did you get your hop-ups from?

For once I am thinking minimal hop-ups and upgrading things as they break. Though knowing me that plan will go out the window and I'll start throwing money at it.

Starting with one of those nice Savox servos. I think you gave me that idea @toyolien. And no, I still haven't finished my JK.

Everything from Fusion. All their prices were lower than Modelsport before the discount. I bought front and rear drive shafts though may have got away with just front. Never had a slipper so thought it would make the build more interesting

It's going to be a great buggy. I've also pre-ordered a few (read; quite a few) hop ups. Not been as excited by a new release for a long time. I'm hoping they follow it with the release of a 2wd TD2 version. Doubt they will though as they do seem to view 4wd buggies as 'superior', but we'll see.

It’s strange cos I don’t have any modern buggies. I’ve got a Wild One and a Madbull but that’s it. There’s just something about it I like. Maybe it’s the little cycle fenders. Reminds me of a Caterham/Lotus 7 (a little)

I mean one could argue that it's the other administrators are a little odd for banning someone for exercising their opinion, who knows. Either way something's gone wrong if you are falling out about a toy car!

Personally I like it, but it's not for me. I'm not really a  fan of how buggies look (some 80s ones like The Grasshopper, Nikko F10 the exception) but it's cool they are trying something out there. It's different, some people are big fans, others less so. That's fine. They haven't taken away any cars from anyone, just made one people can buy or pass on.

It's out there, and it looks high quality.

Battery is a little strange....but then to replace the GF01 battery I've got to take off the rear body (4 clips) and then take off the battery clips (2 clips) which isn't exactly easy compared to sliding it out a hatch.

I love how it looks, personally.

I think it's the Tamiya people have been asking for, for years. The only problem is, when people get what they ask for, they inevitably reject it.

It's visually distinctive, quirky, unique and even has the classic box art.

And let's not forget one of the most important qualities of a classic Tamiya: Controversial at the time of it's release. Just like the Avante, Hotshot, Bigwig, Thunder Dragon etc etc. So many were derided for their different looks at the time but those looks went on to be one of their greatest qualities.

The sad thing is that when examples show up where every possible trace of distinctiveness has been removed and it's made to look as close to possible to the generic, tribal tattooed racing buggies that everyone moans about, people are like "tHaT lOoKs So MuCh BeTtEr"

I would snap one up but it's a little on the pricey side for me. I might sell a few other things off at some point to make money/space for one, though.

Thanks, I’ll take another look. The slipper will make for a more interesting build, I went with one on my XV-01T for that reason. I’ll leave it off this, at least initially, as I’ll stick with a stock or nearly stock motor. Maybe the unis, servo mounts and some alloy hexes. I already have a set of black Egress wheels and tarmac tyres.

It's a long story that involves that FB group and when you ban another admin (the admin that saved the group in its early days) it means that there's a lot of problems of democracy and gratitude (and they hate TC also).

Anyway I don't like this model because it's ugly and blobbish and uses the name Avante and it has nothing to do with the Avante and it has a silly interior deign, concerning front dampers and battery replacement.
We usually call these pieces of art "Mininstry of Complication of Simple Affairs".
That's all, I quit my mouth now.

Outside their TRF line, isn't that what Tamiya is all about? Always felt like that to me anyways. :D

Ugliness + complication... no.

Beauty and ugliness are extremely personal issues, nothing really objectively measurable.

Again, I don't have any feelings either way for this model. :)

While beauty and ugliness being extremely personal issue, battery accessibility being complex is really objectively measurable

And all of this for inboard front shocks... I would have 1000 times preferred a modernized hotshot, with carbon fiber reinforced Nylon chassis and suspension parts, with inboard shocks made the same way as Grahoo did... I would definitely have bought one.

Now, in fairness, there is something fresh to this buggy that changes from a lot of modern buggys we see out there: there is no shock tower to block the pilot view and there is a pilot in it. For me that would nearly catch back the ugliness of the body (all the more so as, one can change a body for something else), but it will be difficult for me to accept the battery access complexity...

Perhaps a future iteration with a different body and alternate battery access will be of more interest to you Max, I hope so.

I'm sure you'll remain welcome here :D

I'm not sure why the FBers would be anti-TC?!

@Badcrumble Probably either TC is too hardcore for them or not hardcore enough... or any other stupid reason. Didn't you know there can always only be one true fan-club of anything? The rest are just wannabes and posers and must be destroyed!

Just popped in an order for a few 'essential' hop-ups at Fusion and had a nice chat with Joanne.

Are the photos you find on the net not enough to define the ugliness of this model?
Do you need more?
