Beautiful work, the chassis is obviously a thing of beauty and enabling use of the M05 steering assembly is a big plus. I also love your work arounds on the screw pins. Interested to hear your progress with the DF03 dampers, I’ve got a set on my boomerang and haven’t found a combo of oil and springs that really feels right yet.

Funny you should mention the dampers. The rear are spot on with the included springs, 2 holes pistons and Tamiya green medium oil. The front however, are way to 'springy'. The dampers only came with 2x 2 hole pistons, so I had to use 3 hole in the front. I've now ordered some more 2 holes to try.

How secure is the battery?

Might have to pick one of these chassis kits up if I can find one.

Nice work, looks fab!

Thanks. With some foam on the chassis, and 2x velcro straps holding the battery on, it's not going anywhere. If you're interested in a chassis, I actually bought 2 but only really need one. So, happy to sell you my second. It's completely un-built. PM me if you're interested.

Finally managed to get some more done on the beauty. I'm not the best painted by any stretch, but the helmet paint came out ok. I'm even worse at drivers faced though....

And the body is done. Tamiya Corsa Grey with MCI decals. These are the first MCI decals I've used, and although they are not a patch on Tamiya's quality they do the job nicely. Especially for a runner like this one.

I've still got to do the window nets and roof etc, but here is it.

Excellent GIF, thank you.

That looks absolutely fn amazing! I bet it runs amazing.

Thanks Cy. To be honest I took it to my local astro track last week and briefly ran it without the body. The front damper springs are too soft, as well as the oil so it had a lot of traction roll. I've now got some firmer springs to try. Also the TBLM 15.5t motor wasn't' quite fast enough, so I'm going to pop in the 10.5t to try. On a positive note though, it looked ace going round the track! I'll try to get to the track again next week.

@toyolien Those old tamiyas need really stiff front springs for track work. I have run soft touring car springs on my thunder dragon with reasonanle results!

Aah I see. That's good to know. I suspected that the heavier end of the car needed the stiffer set up. Seems that's not the case.

Fantastic work! The whole thing comes together so well. It looks like a real machine. My favourite bits are the cooling fins on the engine, and the roofless look with the carbon fibre bars.

Thanks for the comment. The heatsink on the motor is one I've had for a long while. It just seemed to suit this buggy. The roof bars are actually plastic. They are a material called Acetal, but the black version (Delrin). It's easily machinable, and you can drill and tap threads in it. For some reason the original roof bars were a little too short for this carbon chassis, so I had to make some slightly longer ones.

Well, they look sweet. That's odd about the length. However, I found there were a few slightly off spots for the roll-cage, mainly the second from the front mount points were too wide by half their own thickness. Maybe that is where it came in.

Question: You have a different top piece for your carbon fibre body. Mine seems to have a misaligned hole for the body mount ..piece. The hole on mine lines up directly over the main shaft. Does yours do the same? It means I might not be able to mount a body shell.

My roll cage all bolted up fine. I could have used the original roof bars but would have had to bend the cage in a little. This mean that the roof plate over hung a little so I made new bars. I will end up using the roof place as for me, it's part of the iconic look of this buggy.

And, yes, I was caught out a little with the body hole. I reamed it when the mark was on the body, then had to elongate it about 3mm sideways to line up with the body post. In hindsight, I should have looked at is before reaming a hole. The post is over the shaft but doesn't foul it in anyway:

Mine lines up about exactly the same. I thought maybe yours was a new, better aligned version. The problem for me is I have an original Hotshot II body shell, which I was going to refurbish some how, but the hole is already reamed in that, and is off by at least 5mm, maybe more. I think I will check the Hotshot I and II bodies, maybe there was a difference there, though I doubt it.

Your electronics look very nice in that shot too!

By the way, I found a new huge, TT-02 main shaft, thanks to your suggestion (in red) It was slightly longer (maybe 4mm). I had to shave off 1 mm between the two main shaft outdrives to make it fit, but now it is very snug, and looks great.

That makes from a weight distribution POV, but all my vintage Tamiyas have needed relatively soft rear and stiff front because the suspension geometry isn't great, so you get a lot of weight transfer and there is no toe in aiding traction. To be fair it's mostly the fault of grippy modern tyres and tracks and higher speeds due to modern powertrains. On low grip with steady motors they are much easier to handle.

I was going to use a HS2 body  mine with the hole already cut. Darn. Oh well.

Tou cars looking great. Really need to start taking mine apart and rebuilding with this chassis.

Red does look great. And it's beefy.

How is that mount er, screw mounted? Bolted at the back or is it just a tap screw? My Hotshot II mount screw has long thread that goes way into the shaft area. Maybe the Super/Hotshot/II had slightly different mount screws here...

It's a button head hex screw. I thought I might need to countersink it but it clears fine.

I found a small hop-up, Tamiya OP.120, that has some perfect body mounts for the Hotshot II, similar to what you have in your pic. I can mount it like yours, so maybe I can get it to fit (the original Hotshot II one is a threaded screw, that screws into a guide below the metal door). I did contact the body seller and let him know of the hole-alignment issue. He said he would look into it right away. I also suggested that a new design for the piece, which can hold the original Hotshot metal access door, would be very cool. I don't know about you, but that access door is kind of part of the iconic look of the Hotshot for me.

Any clue on the make of that heatsink? I am looking for something similar, but no luck. Closest I found was something from Hot Racing, but I'd be nice to know it would fit (i.e. if I could find the same one as you.)

I'm out most of the day. I'll check later and let you know. 👍

I think I’m going to drill out the body mount hole in the carbon fibre piece on mine. The fastenings should still hold when tightened and then I can use my already cut body shell. Plus saves a bit more weight haha.

Sick build. I recently found and dusted off the remnants of my old Supershot that I built new in '86 or '87. It's missing a bunch of parts, but gonna do a resto-mod project on it and have been scouring TC looking for Supershot builds to get ideas from. Love how yours turned out....so much so that I just ordered a carbon chassis kit from Phangster. Did you ever get the springs and oil dialed in for yours?

Oh, and that scale workshop setup is badass as well!
