Is 2oz enough?

Recommended Posts

I have this body that I want to paint.

Tamiya just wants you to use the regular yellow.

But the color I want is a shade or two milkier.

After two of contemplation, I finally bought Proline paints. Probably 2:1 ratio of yellow and white. Maybe 3:1. I'll have to experiment.

How much should I mix?  Would 1oz be enough for one layer?  2 oz for 2 layers?  I don't mind having to re-mix the second layer.  Having to mix in the middle of the first layer would result in a blotchy paint job.  I don't want to mix 2 + 2 oz and have 4 oz of color that I cannot change either.

Has anybody tried these things?  2oz is only about 60% of a spray can.  It's been like 20 years since I last used airbrush. (but I do remember 1oz bottle lasting several scale tanks, but they are much smaller.)

2oz is enough for Christmas and New Year with a bunch of mates but it won't last all (southern) summer. 😇

2oz is the whole bottle, right?

I doubt you will even come close to using half the bottle for the whole job, maybe even only a quarter if you are mixing with white. You'll need to thin the paint as well which will make it go even further.

Hey @Juggular I'm after the same sort of colour for a 911 RSR shell, and haven't found a PS can that will do the job.

I assume you're talking about airbrushing? I've never used one, so as and when you do work out the colour and give this a go, if you wouldn't mind doing a 'Build Tip' tutorial I, for one, would hugely appreciate it :)

Should be more than enough. I just backed 2 scaler bodies with 2 coats of black from a 2 oz bottle and didn't even use half of it. And I painted one of them with a mixture of 8 parts blue, 1 part black, and 2 parts white (gives a nice faded denim blue) mixed in a 1.5 oz glass jar and only used 2/3 of the mixture.

EDIT: And I don't have any experience with the Pro-Line paint, but I've been using Vallejo airbrush paints (water-based acrylic polyutethane) and it sprays beautifully right from the bottle, no thinning required.

I had no idea Porsche had the similar color.  It looks good.  Success or fail, I'll make sure to post my experiment.

Thanks @markbt73!  I'm relieved.  From what @sosidge said also, 1oz and that should be twice as much as I need for the first layer.  I am surprised to learn how little it takes.  Regular Vallejo acrylic paint works? Or do they make specifically for Lexan bodies?

As others have said that bottle will last ages and ages, one small body like that will hardly make a dint in that.

My advice would also be to back with opaque white, a few good solid coats. Then cost all the inside in black, makes the inside through wheel arches and windows and colours look better IMO.

This white side panel is backed with black which is a bit counter intuitive.

I'm not aware of anyone using Vallejo paints on Lexan. they might work, but the Proline paints are closer to the Createx paints, which are sold as a multipurpose acrylic that is also suitable for fabric painting (so they are more flexible).

Ooh, what is that beige color?

I was going to paint my bug with orange with beige doors, but since there is no beige in spray cans, I was going to go with Pearl White.  But airbrush opens up a lot of doors now.  Your beige color is just the one I was looking for.

I think it's just the light when I took the picture, it's quite white in real life :-)

If you want beige however you can mix your own colours with airburst paints. I've never tried but I'd guess white with a small drop of brown would do the trick for beige.

I mixed this burnt orange to match try to match the BMW colour. As you can see, I didn't back this in black and the white through the side windows doesn't look great IMO.

This was my S800 body too, I'd not recommend this colour combo!!!

lol... as soon as I saw it, I thought, "Oh, no." (sorry)  Then I read "I wouldn't recommend."  That was funny.

I also back everything with a white layer.  White makes colors pop.  I bought a used Unimog that was backed with black only, and that made the color dingy.

For interior, I did 3rd color of black on this NSU Prinz TT.  But after 3 layers of orange, and 2 layers of white, I was still successful in missing a spot.  (I am thinking about using a flashlight through the body to detect these unpainted spots.)

QGznW4S.jpg

I drew a black trim line on it with a sharpie, so it's hard to notice now.

I am also thinking about using dark gray or something that's less stark for interior, just in case I still manage to screw up.

I love the metallic orange! (is it not metallic?)  Orange is still my favorite color.  It looks lighter than PS61, how did you manage that fantastic color? (Why am I getting a sudden urge to drink some orange Fanta!)
