SW-01 "Spares Special" Lunchbox

Recommended Posts

So now having completed my Mudmad "Hop Ups Special", I have enough spares left to build another SW-01. This one will be totally OOB except for bearings, if they every arrive from HK.

So far, only the screws and body parts (obviously!) were used out of the MM set and I only had spent money on getting ABCD screw bags.

IMG_20210907_143658.thumb.jpeg.53f6cb0693fe1fb67fc3430bf4f1b8d0.jpeg

So here are the parts that will be going into the "Spares Special" Lunchbox.

A Parts with silver can already attached when I was testing the MM and a yellow 16T pinion gear

B Parts untouched from the MM kit

C Parts untouched from the MM kit

Metal cross joints, half set (1 pair) from SU-01 build

Soft spring (1 pair) from MM and SU-01 build

Reinforced B parts from the MM build, only roller B16 is of any use as the switch bracket is probably too big for any other ESC anyway

Reinforced C parts from the MM build, only C8 which was replaced by the metal cross joints in that build

G Parts untouched from the MM kit, plastic bearings will be replaced by metal ball bearings

P Parts untouched from a M-05Ra kit (not in picture)

ABCD screw bags, this is the only item so far that cost me any money.

Also required to complete the build. Wheels and tyres, I got a set of new old TT01 that I am planning to use with this build.

RX planning to get a second TX/RX set, will update in due course.

ESC will probably be another 1625 (kind of like them for my 370 builds) -OR- a Mtroniks Viper Autosport20 although probably keeping that for my winter Thunder Dragon build.

And obviously the LB body.

Total cost so far - £16.49, for this build, I will keep posting a running total for every spend, I wanted to see how much it will cost to build this out of spares compared to the (almost) completely hopped up MM (£56 -> £233!).

This build will not be in the order of steps as in the instructions because I had not received the ball bearings. The seller must have sent it by the slowest DHL service possible, a week after arriving in the UK and it is still not with me.

First thing to do is to reduce the size of the bag of parts and the US are sticking out like a sore thumb on the parts tree.

Step 4 - Universal shafts

Recipe: 1/2 pack of metal cross joints, 1 pair of reinforced C8, 2 pairs of stock C15+16 and 2 pairs of BA10 from the MM box.

IMG_20210908_005759.thumb.jpeg.9f7ce80108820553db5d4a6fad3e079d.jpeg

Metal dog bones glued in. The grab screw seems loose, not sure if the kit plastic is too soft. CA glue should take care of it.

IMG_20210908_010805.thumb.jpeg.c7ea15a23969756ffe1bf7dbfd489c44.jpeg

Metal cross joints installed.

Done. Not sure if the reinforced C8 will make any difference, it still feels very loose in the joints.

Step 16 - Wheelie bar

Recipe - Reinforced B16 wheel, kit frame, screws from spares box.

IMG_20210908_012858.thumb.jpeg.4999d633d149f4b0a6482b06056c456a.jpeg

Pretty sure the use of reinforced plastic for the wheel will not make a difference, but since I have it...

Bearing still are not here. It supposingly landed in the UK 8 days ago but only arrived in the UK 3 days ago??? Either way, they are taking their time getting from the airport to me.

So a step that do not need bearings then.

Step 26 - Upper deck

OOB plastics, screws from replacement C bag I bought (ran out of spare BA2 screws)

Now, this is supposed to be a OOB build, it doesn't mean it has to be boring and like all other OOB builds right?

So out with my Gundam markers for a quick splash of color.

Can you guess where I got the inspiration for the gear cover?

My bearings has finally arrived!!! 50 days after I placed the order! Real lesson not to order from HK when they are available locally. Also, another lesson, DHL is totally useless. They deliver at surface mail speed, on planes!

Ordered: 27/7

Posted: 20/8 (!)

Left HK: 31/8

Landed in UK: 2/9

Arrive in UK: 7/9 (?)

In my hands: 15/9

Needless to say, this earned the seller three negatives at once. They were ordered for the Mudmad originally and that was completed last Friday, a week before these arrived. The bad thing? I am still 3 x 630 bearings sort and need to order more, locally this time!

Step 1 - Attaching gears

At least I have enough bearings to complete the first step, all of stock parts. Metal shafts are from the replacement screw bags as the original were used in the MM.

Step 7 - Attaching front uprights

Soft springs from the spring set will be used here. That is the last pair of springs from that set.

Done.

Step 12 - Attaching rear uprights

This will have the metal reinforced universals from Step 4, otherwise stock including the kit springs.

Step 20 - Tie-rods & Step 31 - Steering rod

This will be a mix of leftovers from the Mudmad kit and new parts from the new screw bag C.

The front tie-rods will be yellow for impact as well as the steering rod because I only have one yellow left.

That is it for now, need to wait for a final shipment of 3 630s before I can go any further.

Step 25 - Checking RC equipment

Received a quad pack of el-cheap-o servos today, got it centered and the servo horn on. All OOB items.

IMG_20210918_173551.thumb.jpeg.44bddca8c017a90837f0894115c20aec.jpeg

4 servos for £14.99, so £3.75 each and that brings the current total for this build to £20.24.

Lunchbox body had arrived, cost £15.44. Total spent on this build now is £36.68.

Also, the rest of the required bearings had arrived meaning I can finally move on and finish this.

Step 2 - Gearbox

Stock gears in with bearings.

Step 3 - Attaching motor

Pinion gear will be from the yellow gear set, otherwise all stock.

Step 9 - Attaching front upper arms

I already got the wheels on when doing the wheel nut conversion, see no sense in taking them off. Wheels and tyres are from a Subaru Impreza WRC 2004 (58333), way back from 2009.
