Busdriver 6209 Posted September 8, 2021 I have some disc shaped magnets that I want to use for body mounts, but I need a hole in the middle to fix the to a post. Does drilling affect magnetism?
alvinlwh 5895 Posted September 8, 2021 Which type? "drilling (or sawing) of neodymium magnets is absolutely not recommended. First of all, the material is brittle and fragile. Secondly, drilling causes combustible dust and, thirdly, the heat caused by the drill can possibly demagnetize the material." https://www.researchgate.net/post/How-do-you-make-a-hole-on-a-Neodymium-rare-earth-magnet-magnet 1
Busdriver 6209 Posted September 8, 2021 I’m not sure. They came with a set of magnetic mounts on EBay?
Tamiyabigstuff 832 Posted September 8, 2021 I'm sure I've seen these magnets with holes already in them so you can use a screw to fix them to something which is not magnetic. Certainly would not attempt to drill them.
Nikko85 3453 Posted September 8, 2021 Yes, if they are rare earth metals they are very brittle and will likely shatter before being drilled. Drilling produces a lot of heat, which serves to shake up the atomic structure, demagnetising them too. Also the dust. I'd get some with the holes pre-drilled myself. If iron magnets, they can take a much higher temperature and might drill more nicely, but I would still avoid. 1
Busdriver 6209 Posted September 8, 2021 I feel plan B coming on. Not sure what it is but hey ho!!!
Gazzalene 171 Posted September 8, 2021 Be careful with very strong magnets. it will stop the drill rotating,i have read this can effect the Earths rotation? I may get corrected?

I don't even like handling broken neo magnets without gloves on, and would never consider drilling one.
Busdriver 6209 Posted September 8, 2021 I get it honestly. I promise I won’t do it☠️
