salvine 125 Posted September 13, 2021 Cleaning up some TGX wheels and need to get the old rubber off. What works w/o damaging the wheel?
Original Jardasius 97 Posted September 13, 2021 My personal go to is boiling the wheel and then slowly peeling the bead off the rim..... Then boil the wheel one last time then run a small flat blade screwdriver into the bead edge of the rim and scrape off the removing CA glue.....
SuperChamp82 743 Posted September 19, 2021 That will normally get the tyre off the rim but won’t shift glue off the rims / rubber themselves The best (but not infallible) way to get it off tyres is to soak them in glycerin for about 2 weeks - plastic tub then zip bag. If you then sonic clean them at a high temp / low frequency with acetone + dishwasher liquid in the mix it will swell the tyre / lifting the glue and let you carefully peel it off w/o losing rubber. The rims are harder and the glue is usually best gently filed away, filled then repainted.
bikerclubby 40 Posted September 19, 2021 I’ve used the oven method to remove tyres and found that once the wheels had cooled, the CA turned really brittle and was easily picked clean. 160 deg Celsius for 20 minutes did the trick.
