IF its the original gears then its possible to do some damage to them yes.... I wouldn't run that hot of a motor on it personally.. It can run fine with it BUT I have seen some older tamiya gearboxs get blownout by one in the past

I guess I'll start with the old stock silver can that came with it and take it from there. I will, however, update the MSC to an ESC...

Best thing you could ever do there... A ESC is far more efficient then a MSC ever would be for battery health and runtimes

If the rere gear box uses the same gears as the vintage, I'd get a gear set and keep it in your parts bin while you gradually build up motor power.  I believe TechniGold was once sold as an optional motor for the WildOne so I don't see why it would not work, besides the gears getting brittle if the previous owner(s) used harsh oils.  I only use Tamiya's included grease for this reason to preserve the chemistry of the gears (and gear box housing).

My WildOne aka WillyFast Time Attack Vehicle uses a standard silver can that I painted black.   I really don't care for top speed these days.   Picture in my profile page if interested.

Good luck with the build!
