Think I have a problem... well the wife does anyway!

Recommended Posts

I just discovered this thread, and can definitely feel some solidarity...

Back in 2019, I did not touch a RC car since 2003. Back in 2019, my main hobby was about motorcycle, and most of my hobby spends were about MV Agusta parts and add ons, benzin to fill the tank and lunchs and dinner during rides...

But that was 2019. In 2020, I made almost nothing, I did not spent much, and the bike did about 200 kms (usual average mileage for a year was about 5000km before). I was stuck at home due to the lock down, but got lucky to have a project at work maintaining my busy state.

In December 2020, my wife found out my old 2003 mini-z. She had the bad idea to ask me if it was for the bin, or what? My answer was "Never, I will restore it and our son will get it for X-mas". And it is when I started to search for parts on internet. Internet is a good thing. You can find almost anything that you don't search for . And because I started to search for Kyosho, I discovered they re-released some of my teenager dreams...

Two weeks later and some tooling acquired, the Mini-Z was back in running state.

That day, I handed it to my son, and he started to play with it. And my daughter was kind of jealous... Search on auction and local website and found another one brand new but cheap. That doubled the count of rc cars at home within less than a week after the first one was back in running state. But there was a seed in my mind.

And that seed started to grow. My son already was browsing on local hobby stores and told me he wanted a Slash for his birthday (he is 13 now).

8 jan 2021: I ordered a DT03, some servos, batteries and a Flysky GT5

mid Jan, I built the DT03. My son saw me doing it and wanted one as well. He asked me to order one with his pocket money accumulated for the last two years.

27 Jan 2021: there is a second DT03 landing home. He built it except the shocks.

Mid Feb: my daughter asked for the same. I ordered one and a Turbo Scorpion that day (better, the second box would not required to be hidden while incoming). My wife was aware.

End of feb: A local race was in the program in June for Grasshopper chassis type with 540 silver can motor. Decided to get my hands on some kits to sustain the potential 3 months of lockdown. A box arrived later with a Super Storm Dragon and a Hornet for both my son and me...

Early March. A slash ordered for my son while at the local hobby store. Delivery targeted early april.

Mid March: got my son slash from the local hobby store, and kept it in my car so my son doesn't know it is there.

End of March. Lockdown rumors are growing. Discussed with my wife and got authorization to spend for 3 months of activities. Ordered a Slash for me (yeah, I know), a Lunchbox and its mini sibling and a Super Hotshot.

Mid April, got the news that Optimas will be back in stores soon in Europe, and ordered a Turbo Optima from my local hobby store (pre-ordered, but it got delivered only in July as the first batch was fully reserved at Kyosho Europe).

End April : got my first incomplete Marui Hunter thru a local webpage

Early May: told my wife that the Turbo Optima already ordered in April was for my 50 birthday, and that I wanted a Javelin to build first. And they won't last in inventory. Ordered one.

End of May : got 3 additional chassis for the Hunter (2 are in good shape with no parts, one is complete but broken)

End of June. Ordered a Lunchbox and a Midnight Pumpkin for my kids vacations projects

September: 2 additional broken chassis and parts and Marui Galaxy RS to restore arrived at home.

September is not over and I may do another mistake :-)

I definitely understand what you feel. My wife is supportive, and my kids as well.

My daily routine include check of parts and used cars available on few websites (specific search and alerts are in place). When ordering online I also try as much possible to group kits and parts to save shipment cost (it happened to be the justification for 2 instead of one kit :D).

I have a few friends like me. We create a group together "RC anonyms". We use to introduce ourself when a newcomer joins the group as "I'm Marc, and i'm a RC cars addicted".

What the xxx is happening ?

Very simple for me: I have a bit of time, the possibility of having what I could not have while I was a teenager, and I enjoy this. It didn't completely vanished the Motorbike, but at least I don't spend anymore money with Motorbikes parts :)

I just tell my wife my 1:10 RC hobby is perfectly in scale to my 1:1 car hobby budget so there is no problem.

The white shelves are from Ikea and the gray staggered shelves (which I prefer) are from Bob's Discount Furniture (it's a New England USA thing if you're not from around my area). Unfortunately thanks to the 'rona, everything is out of stock. I could really use another gray shelf...or two...at this point, but it's almost indoor carpet offroad season, so my collecting will slow. For a bit.

The lights are just adhesive backed LED strips that are plug-in-wall powered, they came from Home Cheapo.

It's nice to be surrounded by fellow enablers...I mean, hobbyists!

I remind my wife that my previous hobby involved lots of live music, drinking heavily, young hippie chicks, and late nights.

She likes the RC hobby...

She likes it because it involves greasy men instead of hippie chicks.

While I can do RC with a can of beer or two, I never do static models with a drop of alcohol. The smell of cement and thinner (I work mostly unventilated) is enough to get me high.

Sometimes I think I'm crazy, but then a thread like this comes along and I realize that at the very least I have some company...It's so hard to explain why I just continue to buy & build, but I can't help it.  RC just makes me happy and it's sooo much easier & cheaper than messing with 1:1 cars.  I still love my big toys, but if I'm honest I spent a lot more time with RC these days.

So there's no hope then @alvinlwh, I think I'll just give in then and let it happen!

Yep, just let it happen :).....it's the ever increasing fear of lack of storage space that's the worry, not the hobby! Get into it I say!

The other important motto being when your wife ask how many more cars do you actually need, the answer is ALWAYS "just one more". Can't go wrong with that!

My addiction is pretty generalised as my RC horde includes helis and heaps of planes alongside the cars/truck too so you've got nothing to be concerned about....... (yet)..  :)

Oh and welcome!

Cheers

Kurt

Well one good thing about the pandemic lockdowns is that I rediscovered my love for RCs. During the first lockdown I had lots of time on my hands so I took out my old radio shack road phantom for a spin. It drove well but it was in a fragile state... So that's when memories of clodbusters and blackfoots came back. One year and three lockdowns later, I have a collection of 8 Tamiyas!

How many 'mistakes' will we all make in the last week of September?

I think if I'm honest I came to this site looking for enablers!!! ..."My name is Kol, I have zero days sober from my Tamiya habit and currently I own 3 cars"

Great to see there's such a good bunch of like minded Tamiya fans here and that it's not just me with this slightly out of control passionate interest in these things! This hobby will certainly be cheaper than the cars and motorcycles, and tbh I'll probably be selling the bike soon anyway. I always enjoyed making static models as a kid and certainly enjoyed the Tamiya RC's we had in the family as kids as well. I remember staring for ages at the photos of the Madcap and Egress etc. in a Tamiya catalogue and dreaming of having them, wasn't ever going to happen though. I think now that I can acquire these cars fairly easily, there's a certain subconscious element there somewhere to right that wrong. I'm a detail person and I like the detail involved in making, maintaining and restoring these little cars, so that's that itch scratched a little for me as well. The wife will be happy that I'm not spending small fortunes on bikes anymore, but I'm not sure how she's going to react to a hobby inside the house now. I'm already thinking... 'where can I put up some shelves?'

My wife was just informed that my Thunder Dragon is arriving next week, and she is not too happy about that.

Mine has asked me to start planning my Christmas RC build so that she can start dropping hints to friends and family for the bits required. 🙂

yes, September is not over, and I definitely made another mistake and a broken Nichimo Spirit FF joined the garage today... There is so much of work on this one that it may take 6 months to completion :). But I may need another kit or two in the meantime :)

Lucky you! Mine is never pleased as I work like a factory production line (when on static models), finished one, immediately onto the next one without stopping. Meaning the spending just keeps happening. Since the lockdown, I had gone through about two dozen statics (some from my stash) and then on to about two dozen Gundams and then now about to hit my half dozen RCs.

I know what you mean.  As soon as I finish something i have to start something else.  Sometimes other than making sure the electronics are actually functioning properly I don't even drive it before I'm on to the next one...it's a sickness I tell ya.  At least the wife doesn't mind.
