3 tamiya kits every collection should have.

Recommended Posts

No idea, I haven't played enough of them, but I'd say:

Hornet or Grasshopper

Monster Beetle/Blackfoot

TT01 as a touring car or rally car.

For me, Tamiya seems to represent fun, not all out performance. I'd also argue the Grasshopper and Blackfoot are two of the nicest looking cars there are, and you've got to have an early 90s touring or rally car. All cheap, cheerful and classics.

I have none of these BTW, so don't listen to me. But IF I was to become a Tamiya collector, this is what I'd get.

Not sure about every collection, but if I'd ever start a collection (which I won't), I'd want these on my shelf:

  • Avante (original)
  • Mazda 787B (1/10th scale)
  • hmm inclined to say Subaru Brat for me personally... but for its pure iconic-ness  I'd say Grasshopper (never had one and never wanted one, but it was the cheap beginners' kit back in the days..) or Hornet (never had or wanted one either :D).

Exactly what I expected from you.

To me 3 are a bit too few to pick, as I feel there are more major "iconic" categories to choose from in the Tamiya range.

I'd say a complete collection of "essentials" should include:

- 1 vintage SRB chassis;

-1 vintage 3-speeder;

-1 vintage Group C;

-1 golden age "fun" car (HotShot/Frog/Brat/Grasshopper/Hornet/Wild One/FAV/Fox/Monster Beetle/Blackfoot)

-Porsche 959 or Toyota Gr. B;

-Avante

I lost interest at the beginning of the '90s, therefore I don't have the same affection or knowledge about later kits.

Mileage may vary depending on the user, but for MY money...

- Blackfoot
Why? Fast, fun, and durable. If you don't drive it like an Aarrma you can get LOTS of packs through a Blackfoot before it needs surgery.

- TXT-1
Why? Big, fun, and medium-fast. It looks scale and can be customized to the hills with aftermarket bodies, tires, and suspension. Add the "sponsor plates" on the chassis and they look amazing.

- Bruiser
Why? 3 gear transmission, scale appearance, and scale BEHAVIOR because the truck is so heavy. With a 27T brushed motor (geared up a smidge) they're super fun. Full disclosure...mine is actually an HGP407. If it was a real Bruiser...I doubt I'd have ever driven it :(

A fairly tough question. A tt02 for the road then the rest to cover off road 2x4 or 4x4. My philosophy was Manta and TD for off road and the super sabre to fill the vintage category. The lunchbox is a basic and common kit but its handling.. I don't have a kit to fill comical category but I'm trying not to think too hard on that spot.

Nice thread.

Mine would be;

Sand Scorcher

Sand Rover

Hotshot

But I don’t own any modern Tamiyas so I’m probably missing out on some great cars.

Lunchbox/Pumpkin for the fun side of things

Big rig for Tamiyas realism

then a TRF 511 for the racier folks among us?

Super Clod Buster

Plasma Edge II

VX-01 Lancia Delta Integrale

I own all three.. plus a M06 MX-5, TT-02 GT4 anniversary mustang, Original TA-02 Nissan skyline nismo GTR, and the cream of the crop a Grand Hauler.. I have a wee collection of Tamiyas

3 is tough, I'd try and get a broad experience:

  1. A SRB (or derivative) of choice
  2. A 3 speed (vintage, Hi-Lift, big rig etc)
  3. Any TRF vehicle (pick your poison)

👍
