Nor would I calculate the cost haha

I now actually put my costing spreadsheet up for my build threads, worst offender is the SW-01 Mudmad, which was built out of hop ups except the screws and body.

I don't post them in my builds (mainly because I'm not very good at keeping my builds uptodate) but I too keep spreadsheets of all the costs for each build. What I've learned from that is a: never let your wife see it and b: how easily you can more than double the cost of a kit in hop ups...

Maybe we should have another thread: What's your most hopped up build? aka What build have you spent more than a mortgage payment on? :)

Now... How that should not be measured as a pounds and penny or dollar and cents way but a % of the base cost as my Mudmad costs me £233 to build, which is less than the base cost of some kits, but compare that against the £56 I paid for the kit, which means it is over 400% more. Then some may shout unfair as some kits such as the R kits comes with some hop ups already included. 😁

For that same car, I actually made up a second spreadsheet if I build the same car out of nothing but spares and hop ups, it will cost just below £200, which is less than my actual spend. The plus side is, I got a second car out of the "spares".

Please, let's not

The majority of my Tamiya builds are hopped up to the bunny ears. And by "most hopped up", do you mean in absolute terms, or compared to the price of the kit? Because say USD300 on hopups for a 500 dollar kit isn't really much compared to a much cheaper kit having the same cost in hopups, or at least that's what I tell myself.

And you keep telling yourself that because it IS true! ;)

So I just consulted my spreadsheet and worked out my last build started with a kit price of "x" which was quickly followed by a slew of hopups costing 1.5x, then I felt silly as I had over 2/3rd of a complete car left over, so spent another 0.5x to complete it as an original build....

if my wife asks, "x" = £3.99.....

Another way to look at it, is that I got 2 cars for the price of one and a half, so I'm actually making money doing this! :D

I know, right?  I guess things got out of hand.  I'm set through retirement.  Don't get me started on the database of spares and hopups!

@speedy_w_beans Please also post the kit model numbers.

It's all in a spreadsheet with general category, model type, chassis type, kit number, description, build status, body status, etc.  Too much data to put in a post.

What you have is called a hobby shop. Just throw a sign on the front of your house and don’t forget your 15% discount for Tamiya Club members

You're right.  The LHS closest to me just has a little more inventory, mostly bodies, tires/wheels, and consumables.

Is the DB01RR NIB? Asking for a friend lol.

Yes!  I have a pair of DB01Rs built currently and the parts to upgrade them to RR spec, plus the NIB RR.

I went through a few phases in this hobby:  1) excitement/wanting to build and drive one of everything, 2) interest/focus on specific model types, 3) collecting/organizing/planning to my preferences/tastes.  When I make time for the hobby, I mostly want to build as a way to relax.  Sometimes I'll throw a battery in an onroad chassis and run a few laps in the street.

I've acquired quite a few in the last 18 months, as many others have as well.  In no particular order

Plasma Edge
Racing Fighter
Blackfoot
TT-02 Subaru '99 Monte Carlo
Manta Ray
Top Force
Aqroshot
Super Hotshot
WIld One
Super Astute
Novafox (NIB)
Egress
Avante
Frog (Original resto)
Zahhak

Tamiya Amarok is on sale at Tamiya USA for $150 so I just grabbed one.
Super Avante on pre-order.

Would like to get a Lunchbox/MP, a Clod Buster, and maybe a dark impact.  I'd like to have one of each chassis.

Something I keep telling the wife:

Buying something on discount that we didn't need to begin with is not "saving money".   It's most definitely not "making money" either :lol:

I justify my hobby by constantly reminding myself that I spend less than she does. That way she's happy, I'm happy, although my bank balance is crying LOL.

Please do NOT use loctite for screws that go into plastic! There have been several posts on here specifically warning against this, as loctite eventually breaks down plastic and makes it form cracks around the screw hole.

Only used it on plastic, after a thread has stripped, and generally the part really needs replaced anyway.

That would be a dangerous thread!! 😬

Mine is maybe my Dark Impact, but it's been a progressive build since 2007!

Never done a spreadsheet in my life, but did keep receipts for my 1:1 build,  in a box, but after I counted up how much VAT and import duty I was paying, I stopped looking...(also after getting investigated by HMRC, as they thought I was running a business, I was importing that much...🙄😳

I have a few: -

Original Rough Rider that I got for Christmas in 1983 - fitted with a re-re body - it still runs but is pretty much a shelf Queen.

Re-re Rough Rider - because why not?

Re-re Buggy Champ - my runner for the beach - much modified.

Original Grasshopper with modified suspension and Baja Bug Body

Re-re Grasshopper with modified suspension and a Baja Bug Body - Super detailed with lights etc

Re-re Wild Willy - standard

Mini Cooper Monaco Rally - standard

TT01 Drift with Nissan Coppermix Body - standard but for Tamiya light kit

TT01 Rally with ABC Mitsubishi Evo 10 Body - slightly modded.

2 x Gravel Hound - one standard - one with every upgrade and Brushless Power - squeeze the trigger and hold on! Wildly impractical!

Most of an Original Avante - slowly gathering / making parts

Most of an Original Fox - slowly gathering parts

Mostly I make scale crawlers and scale drift cars - making my own parts with lathe and milling machine - my Tamiya's are just a link to my childhood.

My crawlers have working lights, sirens, flashing lights, engine sounds, working winches and full interiors - but none of them are Tamiya

I have my eye on a Tamiya Amarok to match my real one :)

12 NIB

6 new built

5 runners

...so plenty, without being excessive (because according to my showroom archive, I used to have around 100 kits, 20 or so body shells, several other runners, numerous motors, parts and radio sets, all on top of what I have now, and that's pretty excessive!)

I have a bedroom reserved with walls of shelving for all the kits, bodies, parts, electronics, paints, tools, etc.

My home office has shelving to display about 30 models at any given time.

I have a laser printer with white toner, vinyl cutter, 3D printer, and CNC engraver/cutter and the CAD tools to make custom parts and graphics.

To be honest, after 11 years in the hobby I'm questioning how much time I have left on the planet vs. how much material and equipment is in the house.

I could keep building, but to what end?  I'm thinking about downsizing/selling as other priorities are becoming more important.

Hey, when you are selling a few items... Let us know 😁
