PS42 Translucent Yellow

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any experience with PS42 translucent yellow please? Now the trigger is well and truly pulled on the CC02 G500 the 6yr old and I have got into the usual discussion on its colour, as I’ve had my way on pretty much everything so far I’ve given in and it’s getting yellow, I’d like something like this by @metalheadDad below but in yellow!

He has backed it in bright gunmetal and then gunmetal, just wondered if anyone has anything similar to show before we get ordering, I’ve also had a look at Spaz Stix Candy Yellow but this looks a bit too gold for his liking!

Please spam away with what you’ve got, I’d love to do this colour scheme by @Ferruz but not sure how I’d get that done on a body like the G500.

This is translucent yellow in combination with translucent purple. Back with bright silver, silver and black. I would say I have sprayed one layer too much of the translucent colours but I think you could get an idea of it.

@Aerobert thanks fir the picture, I’ve ordered translucent yellow, translucent silver, fluorescent yellow and white and will it them on in that order, I’m not sure if I need to get a coat of bright gunmetal before the white coat or not..somehow I feel 5 colours is a bit of overkill but I’m struggling to find a yellow that appeals enough to me!

I’ll do a few testers with the leftovers I’ve got at home soon and see what happens with them, I’m sure I’ve got most of the above already!

Testers are key, but getting the right custom color with PS paint isn't cheap. I had this same problem deciding on what blue to use for a Karmann Ghia. Managed to match the color of the one I had in high school, so worth it. The translucents can be finicky like smoke to get an even coat, though. So, g'luck!

Sounds very interesting. I'm curious to see the result. Good luck!

I love me some see thru paint.

1st one I did was the rere lexan Brat, it was a total experiment, have to dig out a photo if I can find one.

The link shows trans orange > bright silver > black BUT I would like to see white or chrome or silver used & what effect THAT gives too.

the trike was done with trans orange and backed with a bunch of different end of cans I had to use up, got a random fade across the shell & even the splatter adds to it, that’s what I reckon anyway :P

@taffer sold me his farm king which he’d painted in trans green only. I backed it with CoreRC chrome and black & loved  the result.

EDIT:

gonna Chuck a few more photos of trans paint jobs for good measure

@Shodog do you have a picture we can see, I’m curious to see how it looks now, what did you use to back it with please?

@J@mes The green Farm King is exactly the look I’m going for but yellow, I’m not sure if it possible so going to have a good crack it with some testers, I’m quite a fan of the trans colours, although a bit of a pain it’s great to see how they come out!

I've used the green like the Farm King. 3 coats of translucent green backed with silver. The backing colour can drastically change the look. Backing the same green with white resulted in Kawasaki green.

Sorry I didn’t save the cut off wheel well piece.  I used gunmetal and it turned the bright yellow into this brownish puke color.

Many have seen my red gun metal Porsche. That color it beautiful and I would recommend it to anyone.

On my slash I used Translucent green backed with metallic gold

img34_942021120113_1.jpg

I liked how it came out but man that farm king above looks fantastic. I think any of the translucent colors would look electric when backed with that chrome paint. I would love to try those combos but I don’t see that brand of paint being sold in the states and shipping an aerosol internationally might be an issue.

My Re-Re Frog which you saw a while back is my only Translucent yellow based body, backed with the greens/silvers.

I'm currently working on a body that will, hopefully, be a Mulberry color using a combination of translucent pink, translucent purple and cherry red with silver backing - my tests so far have been close, but not quite there, however I now have some factory color coded touch up automotive paint from the actual car to match against, so have to do a few more tests before I commit to RC shell.

Hoping to get a start on it this weekend, but may still be a week or so away, as also have my Sierra body which will be straight camel yellow to do. Will post the tests once though, for peoples reference, those I should knock off this weekend.

The thing with translucent paints, is making sure you have a very, very even coverage. IF you don't then you will notice the patches :( particularly if you back with a dark color, i botched my first Hot Shot body as a result of this, as I backed the translucent red with gun metal, and its was patchy AF!

For this reason, particularly if layering multiple translucents on top of each other, it can be very difficult to see if you coverage is even, or if the second colour (when light, like I'm doing with above Mulberry) has even been put down.

@Ryz82 Good to see you are still about!  I really like the translucent paints, my biggest issue has been laying down the same amount of paint as the testers I’ve done! Looking forward to getting back home at the weekend and getting into the testers next week.

Are you doing a Cosworth? We are currently enjoying the Sun on the quite small Greek island of Kos and came across an absolutely mint RS500 the other day, of all the places I didn’t expect to see one Kos is it!

Cheers, has been a rough year health wise (cancer) so was in/out of hospital and out of action for a good 6 months. Remission now and starting to get back into the backlog of bodies and repairs and upgrades etc.

Yep, will be RS500, trying to replicate this particular Group A from back here in AU (if your familiar with Bathurst, then you may know it)

@Ryz82 Sorry to hear about that, but glad that you are recovering and able to get back towards some normality.

No ideas on Bathurst but a great looking example there, is it getting the full B&H livery as well?

@nel33 I really struggled to fund any examples of translucent yellow on my google searches, it seems to be one of the much lesser used colours, hopefully next week I can get some testers done for my metallic version and see what it’s like, I’m nervous as spent a few £££ on cans that may not work!

thanks, i thinking PS6 might be the one for me with the strong yellow though it needs to have that very light orangish tone. maybe ps6 with silver backing?? either way i always to silver or white backing unless black is called for.

Bathurst is Australia's (and I'll dare say the worlds) greatest touring car race, held on a brilliant public mountain road circuit - if you're into motorsport check it out.

Back in the late 80s and early 90s it was dominated by the Sierra and R31 'Godzilla' Skyline. It eventually transitioned regulations to what we have now, which is the V8 Supercars format.

Yes I will be doing the full B&H livery. Have already done some tests with Camel Yellow vs Yellow and combination of the both to try and get a close match. And recently picked up some decals upscaled from someone who does them for slot cars (sadly some weren't as clean/crisp as I'd like, so working out if I replace/recreate them, or just go with them for now)

I shall check out Bathurst then, I don’t remember so many Japanese cars in the touring cars back in the day here! RS500’s vs R31’s sound like a lot of fun!

I don’t think this is the dandelion yellow noted above but is exactly what I’m looking for!

In fact very similar to what I was going to do on the GTR before it went orange!

You could try the translucent yellow backed by camel, or even a light coating of normal yellow backed by camel. I dont have them on me ATM but i do have a couple of tests i do for the Sierra, that i can try and take a photo of tomorrow and upload.

As with all modern real world paint schemes that have that shift of color/shade as seen here. You may need to possibly add a light layer of translucent silver again between the two yellows to get it shift in the light.

@nel33 I have some paint left in my translucent yellow can, and some white. I can do a small test tomorrow if you like, and post ?

This unassuming thread is like 1:1 car porn for an antipodean, from Evo X to R32 GTR, ooft, also remembering Longhurst in his B&H E30 M3, times of legends.

And, speaking of racing, thank the heavens that the Supercars are back, Bathurst in 32 days FTW.

Indeed it is, haha. Though just realised i said R31 :( in previous post, which yes did race, but it was the 32 that was Godzilla and what dominated.

im trying to match the dandelion yellow, a quick search gives another yellow: lightning yellow which is more of a pure yellow. not sure which of the 2 this is but the evox that has a slight orange tint is also my goal. granted the pic is from the Initial D arcade game series so the tone might exact. the tone i call Gundam yellow is the one that looks similar to that evox. its the yellow tone many gundam models have for the V crest on the forehead.

i would greatly appreciate it if you could do a test sample of transluscent yellow and white backing. i usually compare the colors with and without backing as white and silver have some different result

the transluscent yellow and camel mix seem promising though isnt camel more into brown scale? im sure it can be achieved with the right balance of the 2 colors.
