Wow! I added all my pics tonight and the non-tamiya one got the most interest. Thanks for all your comments. I welded new sills (inner and outer) and door steps to this one, other than that it was original. Never been repainted either. Big problem is the stones thy flick up from the front wheels and chip the paint of the sills. First stage of the rusting. They can last well if fully wax oiled from new and kept clean but even then there will always be somewhere they start to go. This one had a standard 1275 with carb. Great fun to drive.
I was thinking of getting a Mini minus (fibreglass body) but they don't look quite right.
This was the only mini I had that didn't leak oil from the gear change rod, but then it only had 27000 miles on it when I bought it and 34000 when I sold it 5 years later.
Stevepi: your meant to be helping me cut down on buying not tempting me with another project lol.

They are excellent on the corners. My older mini handled better than this one. Had 10' wheels which seem better for corners. I was thinking about fitting a Vauxhall 1.6i 8v. Would have been good for 100bhp+. There is a company that make all you need for the conversion- subframe, driveshafts, etc. They also do the conversion kit for a Vauxhall 2.0i 16v beast but I think you have to modify the body work. In the end I thought the effort and cost don't justify it. This was a basic sprite 1275 model- I did the minor alterations. Thinking back, I wish I bought a cooper- everyone always said 'is it a cooper?' to which I would put my tail between my legs and say 'no' lol. Also, on a bright day you could still see where the 'sprite' stickers used to be due to sun fading lol. Given the choice of a fun Mini or your GTi lupo my heart would go for the Mini but my head would have the GTi. Still fun and no Sunday morning rust treating!12-Feb-2011

Excellent. I've always been a fan of box art paint jobs but this just proves how much better they can look! You have taken a cheap looking Tamiya and turned it into an expensive looking tamiya. It really looks better quality now. I may have to rethink all my box art plans lol!12-Feb-2011

Box art or custom? I'm in the same boat. Used to have a lunchbox years ago and loved it. Now I've got a new one which won't be used and will be box art, I then got a 2nd hand one as a runner. At first I wanted it as the real version 'Rollin Thunder' but using it in box art brings back sooooo many memories so I'm keeping that as box art too. Looks like I will have to buy another one........Loving your neons by the way!
