Ha ha! I know what you mean. It’s a little sad but I have to keep most of my Tamiya stuff out of view in an undisclosed location. It would be way to tempting for my four and eight year old to want to thrash them around. I can’t blame them either! Kits like my Wild Willy 1 and 959 rally are like catnip’s to 4-8 year olds:) Speaking of cats, our two cats also seem to like to chew on small wires: So It’s more like banker box Barron’s than shelf queens around here for now.

Our Grasshopper 2 is great fun though. I can’t help but cringe a little watching them accidentally bounce into things. Then I remember I learned the same way:)

Thanks! Yes, somehow I have managed to hide these things away safely during the years I stepped away from the hobby. I still have my first and only Grasshopper 1 body and wheels, but the whereabouts of the rest is a mystery to me.

This Fox has always been a runner so I don't mind running it around with my son's Grasshopper 2 on the original wheels and tires. I do have some new shelf wheels and tires that make it almost look like shelfer. Without Ebay though I would feel a little more hesitant to run it. This 2WD buggy with it's enclosed chassis has proven to be very durable without a lot of parts to break.

Thanks! I’m looking forward to this project. I’m a little nervous how the materials will hold up for this process but thankfully there are a lot of great resources and guidance on this website. I might try the process first on a Bluegroove-MCI set for the experience and comparison.

Thankfully I saved the box all these years in an attic (not ideal archival condition I know). It does have a few small scratches and dirt marks that don’t show up in this lightning and jpg size, but otherwise it’s in good shape. The box for my body decal set is in good shape too.

The car itself is in great shape having only had one short test drive before breaking the arm part. I was a bit disappointed back then when this broke after putting in all the work to build it.

I’ll upload more photos as the process goes or finishes. I have a few more kits to share here as time and weather allows.

I uploaded a few photos of my Fox box that may help with the motor question. I still have the unmarked gold motor is came with that has green and yellow wires. I upgraded to a Technipower back then -that it still runs on. The box simply says it' includes the popular 540 type competition motor...' I always assumed this was a standard Tamiya motor but maybe not.

My first rc body
Cameron PS

It did indeed see some action! It put some miles on my first Grasshopper and drove it everywhere I could. This one will be shelfer for the time being. It's 100% parts that came in the kit except for the wheels, tires, and body. I think I will leave the original gear box off of it for now and let that sit as its own bit of personal history.

That's a funny coincidence because my eight year old son also has a Grasshopper (2)! Our four year old is becoming a pretty good driver too. These kiddos are certainly entering the hobby at a different place in its history than we did. I haven't got that kit here in the show room yet but will when there is time.

One thing I forgot to mention is I ran this with the rear spike tires that went on the Hornet, so these paddle tires didn’t see any action. I mostly used it on dirt, gravel, and grass. I also remember thinking spikes looked more exciting than the paddles. Too bad they burned off pretty quickly:) Now I love them both for what they are.

I had the same feeling about a few models! Especially the 'newer' ones that kept rolling out after I had been in the hobby a few years. Now I love them all like a big family tree :)

I'm hesitant, yes!, but also pondering the future. I guess I'm thinking out loud, should I finally get around to giving it the box art body I wanted this kit to have, or do I leave it as an example of my 1980's handy work? I'll probably leave it as is for a while longer and when the time and weather allow then do the body properly.

One thing I should point out about the body art on this is the number 2 decal was from an a Fox sheet. This Striker kit should really have the box art 6 that came with it.

Great photos! From looking at them it looks like the Falcon and the Striker share some similar rear parts designs.

What a cool looking buggy! I love the roll cage and seeing all the parts inside, but is getting debris inside a concern?

Thank you! I have a few more fun things to share here as I can find the time. I feel quite fortunate to have been interested in Tamiya in the 1980's and near a hobby shop that supported this interest. As things go, that same family owned hobby shop closed its doors last month after a 50-year run.

It is a wonderful hobby that continues to delight. This history side of things interests me more and more. I am quite inspired seeing all of the things people are posting here. Growing up I only knew a few people in person with this interest and these days I don't know anyone in person.

I agree. I’m glad it lasted as long as it did though. It was great being able to share the experience of a local hobby shop with a new generation. The family who owned and ran it decided to retire. I hope a new hobby shop business goes in.

I am kind of amazed it lasted as long as it did. I think this speaks in part to it being well managed in the time of online shopping and to the community that supported it. These are local articles about the most recent 20+ year owner and what it looked like full of hobby stuff.

Yes the body has some earned running wear but the parts are all in great shape. The previous owner knew what he was doing and enjoyed it!

This is the first kit I have that I didn’t build myself so it’s in a unique place of my collection.

I hope so! My guess is it will happen on an anniversary year and will be a similar evolution as the Wild Willy 1 and 2 was.

It’s interesting to see only one sponsor decal shows up on the Hot Wheels version. I think it is a beautiful car with or without sponsors.
