The Super Champ came out back in 1982. Tamiya had a huge success making the Sand Scorcher and Rough Rider back in 1979, which were the first RC buggies to sport waterproof radio boxes. And proper suspension with oil filled shocks.
The Super Champ was an attempt to step up the game. It came out in 1982, and they had now gotten rid of the radio box - in order to save weight and make access to components easier. It also had new spiked rear tires (very soft). And it has this fantastic looking rear mono damper with an oil bottle and a tube connected to it! A kinda reservoir system, which was supposed to make it handle the bumps much better than it's older brothers.
It didn't turn out to be much of a winner though, it was too rear-heavy and understeered too much... But it LOOKED like a winner!
My car was a lucky ebay/US find a couple of years ago, and one of the first cars to enter my collection. Wanted a Sand Scorcher, but just wasn't willing to pay the high price (now with the 2010 re-re- I'm extra happy I decided to wait!)
It's been a runner, and came with complete radio gear. Including an old Tekin ESC. The original manual speed control was included, maybe I'll get it mounted one day. The body is a bit cracked I'm afraid, but not too bad. I got some repro decals for it, which are too pale and don't stick very well. So I guess I'll have to re-do the shell and get some decent stickers one time...
The best thing about this car is the fact that the previous owner did a hell of a job polishing all the alloy parts! It really shines! The black wheels look cool too!
