Hi fellas,

some of you might remember my Porsche 914/6.
3 years ago there were no Fuchs wheels available, so I faked some using HPI vintage 5-Spoke wheels. But I never was really satisfied. Now that there are the HPI CupRacer Fuchs wheels, I wanted to give them a try. A first test fit with the original CupRacer tyres disappointed - the sidewall of the tyre was too low for my taste. The HPI vintage tyres have a higher sidewall and the same inner diameter at the frontside, but are wider and have a much larger inner diameter at the backside. So I decided to modify the Cup Racer wheels to take the HPI Vintage tyres. It is rather easy if you have a dremel tool!

1. Cut off the last ring of the Vintage wheel and smoothen the edges.
2. Sand down the last bead of the CupRacer wheel to about 1mm so you can slide on the ring up to the second last bead.

3. CA glue wheels and let cure

4. Glue tyres to wheels at frontside, otherwise they pop off too easily.
Voila, there you go! I like it much better now!

2 The finished product Comparison: HPI Vintage left, HPI CupRacer right Comparison: Wheels only Tyre comparison: Cup Racer left, Vintage right Cut off outer ring of the Vintage wheel Sanded last bead of CupRacer wheel Finished hybrid wheel The result: Frontside... 1 ... and backside 2 before

I remember seeing this car well. I used to have a 914 in High School. I have the HPI Porsche wheels also, and was elated when they released them. They are soooo cool. You did a great job with the modification, and your 914 looks even MORE realistic now!!! Spectacular! Too bad Tamiya doesn't make wheels like this! But it's great to have them no matter what! I have ordered about 4 sets for future Porsche projects.

Well it seems agonizing to have to butcher all those wheels up and HPI really did a favor and a pain in the butt with releasing the VINTAGE series of wheels as you point out the sidewalls look so much closer to the old stuff. That aside, your bump of the best Porsche Tamiya NEVER released is much appreciated and looking better than ever. Weren't you going to get the real owner to sign your car???

Dante77

23-Jan-2011

Hey Crash, thank you! Nah, the owner lives in the U.S. and I'm in Germany. That wold be a bit far!

I won't mind receiving the body in the post and then getting the owner to sign it, just let me know, we can do it. I am sure the hard work and such to track the owner down and then follow him to the track to watch him drive and then get his autograph will just be tolerable with me, but I will endure such a hardship for a fellow Tamiya guy.

Just let Tim/Tom (I forgot) sign a card or something you can put with it on the shelf Saves you from sending the car across the globe and risking it to break
