SOLD - NIB 1988 Schumacher CAT XLS
My NIB Schumacher T403 XLS ('4.W.D. World Champion Replica' as it says on the part label on the box) from 1988.
The CAT XLS differs from the '87 XL by having wide track front and rear (spacers were used to push out the wishbones) with a wider steering drag link and longer drive shafts to suit. The XLS also had a front diff with one-way driveshafts as standard (instead of the XL's one way front diff) and minor mods to the rear upper arm link & fixing holes on the gearbox side plates to improve the rear suspension geometry. Biggest visual change is those fantastic iconic chromed wheels.
All the modifications are relatively subtle and kept the CAT competitive until it was substantially revised as the Procat in 1989.
Like all my early NIB Schumacher kits, the packaging reveals something about the state of what was a relatively small (but growing) firm back in the '80's. Early kits have no printed labels on the parts bags, instead there are hand written part numbers in permanent marker. The bodyshell, wheels & tyres have no packaging, just like my XL. Schumacher appeared to have started plastic wrapping their tyres onto a cardboard header about the Cougar 1 / Procat era, but I've also seen earlier Topcat's NIB kits with tyres packaged in this way.... and some later kits with no packaging again - all a bit random. Chuffed to get this kit, it's a great piece of 1/10th 4WD history and one of my favourite models from the RC brand that means the most to me.
