How To Strip Paint Safely!!!
Now I'm sure as hell that I'm not the only TC member to melt an old shell with strong paint stripper... Well, I have a solution. (I DID NOT FIND THIS OUT MYSELF, it was suggested to me but another TC member)
Here goes:
De-Solv-It Graffiti Remover (From Wickes, Screwfix, Etc)
Add to paint...
Wait 5-15 Minutes (20-30 for extra thick paint)
Remove with stiff brush or blunt knife
Scrub with striff brush and fairy liquid & water
Re-paint :-)
I had this shell from new, and it had 3 coats of Gloss Orange Spectra paint. It took 4-5 minutes to go from painted, to soft...

Wow that is a very nice result
Thanks for sharing.

That's rather cool. Is it Polycarbonate safe as well?
mor10retro
Seems to be very effective. The paint shrink the same way if you put a thin layer of brake fluid on the paint and heat it up with a hairdryer. It's a mess working with brake fluid, so next time I will try this method. Thanks for sharing.

yes its poly safe, even says so on the bottle, this is a gel aswell so nice and easy to use. ive never had any luck with brake fluid. too impatient lol

Okay Daz, now you have to strip a lexan shell for us with that and show us the results. Thanks for sharing, no more melting of shells, at least now there is no real excuse for it.

Wow very efficient product, thx
Daz87UK
@crash just look in my showroom, the mondeo in there used to be pink, now purple same as my scooby. just no tutorial. worked pretty much the same, only 10 times faster. and easier to clean off being a one piece, it was basically like paint stripping a bowl lol
Daz87UK
oh, and ps paints dont bubble like in pic3, it just melts and changes the colour of the gel.

Could you write the active ingredients down from the bottle. I bought a similar product and if left on to long it starts melt the styrene, good thing I used a test piece! Be careful!
Daz87UK
nah its cool, i left it on overnight on an old pajero where it had halfords car paint on it, came back and it was fine. paint was f.u.b.a.r but the shell was mint
BeetleLover
That sounds great, so does it say what the active ingredients are?
Daz87UK
ill find out later tonight

Thanks for the tip Daz - this stuff did in 20 minutes what I'd been trying to do for 6 months on my 58044 Pajero shell with brake fluid, sanding and scraping ... A word of warning for old shells though - mine was definately beginning to soften after 15 minutes, accompanied with a slight melting/burning plastic smell & the styrene took on a lot of the smell of the remover ... it hardened up again & de-stunk itself overnight though ... @ BeetleLover - the Screwfix page has a link to the MSDS - which lists the ingredients in generic terms & very rough percentages, so I guess the recipe is considered proprietory

glad to see its getting arounds... my shell is the highlift one so not very old and the pajero was
re-re, didnt think of testing old shells. but good to here it fixed itself though

Thanks for posting this! I've got 4 shells lined up for 'graffiti removal' so I will get to work with this technique asap. I have noticed that the container you have posted is just under £10 on Screwfix, but the same company seem to do an aerosol can alternative which is just over £5. Anyone with any experience of the spray can as it might make applying it easier. Also, how much do you want to put on the shell?
Daz87UK
you get more for your £'s with the gel but the spray isnt too bad. gel is a bit stronger. with the gel, you just brush it on, about 1mm thick. doesnt have to be perfectly neat, you can go over it more than once. quantity wise, ive done 6 or 7 shells and still got enough for another if not 2 more. its a bargain
The Furry Critter
That's helpful, cheers mate. Gel it is then!
Dannie Boy
Looks like your good at putting the paint on too Mate!
Nice finish you got there!!
Regards Dan.

i used to work in a 1:1 accident/body repair shop, got the art down to a tee now lol. ill do a tutorial on that too next time, but the idea is not to do little sprays like most do, do a long spray moving fairly slow at a good distance of about 20-30cm away... and always warm the paint up first, i use a heat gun or a bowl of hit water until its nice n hot, then shake the crap out of it for a while, warm it up again, then shake n spray... firt coat needs to be very very thin so you can see the plastic clearly (or old paint) and it looks like bad overspray. after that, its plain sailing, lots of thin coats (each dried with a heat gun or hairdrier) and done. its easier if you plow in and dont be scared of making a mistake, its the paranoid careful pwople that make most mistakes, dont try too hard, mistakes can be fixed sorry for rambling lol

I have used the spray version of this on a Hornet shell and on hard bodies too. Works fine. Smells awful!
I expect the non-spray is more economical and cleaner to use though.
Daz87UK
thats very true
Daz87UK
I'm guessing the spray version is safer on clear shells
