Scorcher Desert Rat Aluminum Chassis Pt3
More progress to share-Most recent photos up top. Wheels and tires courtesy of RC4WD. Added longer drive shafts to compensate for the suspension travel. Added the dual shocks for the rear, then made higher mounts for the shocks up front, eliminating the Tamiya mounting points. More work on the cage too. I can say it is solidly bolted to the pan! I still have to figure out the front hubs as I need more exposed thread to properly mount the front wheels. That will be for the next chapter.....

Loving the progress Franklin. Your ATD is simply faar out! 'Just those rims tho' - I'm not that chuffed about them and would opt for Centerlines instead. ..keep going!

This will be the inspiration for future out and out contemporary VW baja racers builders. Fantastic work !!! Will you be modding the body as well ? Enjoying your build thread over at S4x4
Franklin
JackNed, appreciate the great words! Yes-the body will be getting some mods-haven't got it fully figured out yet. I'll need to get more done on the chassis first.

Looka great! What are the cage made out of, and how is it put together...more to the point, can it be done in a domestic setting with affordable tools?
def4x4
Awesome, and great work so far!
Franklin
WonderBoy-Thanks! The cage is made from 3/16 inch dia un-coated automotive brake line. My local auto parts store has it. I am sure most automotive parts stores carry it although the size will prob be the closest metric equivalent where you are. This all can be done in a simple workspace, provided you have some ventilation. I use a tube bender for brake line, a cut off wheel on a drill or small table saw, silver solder, flux and a hand held brazing torch using Mapp gas or equivalent. None of the tools are really expensive-you do not need a professional shop at all. If you want more information, just send me an email.
