Quite rarely these beasts turn up for sale and if it does people have been bidding for them on auctions of late for rather ridiculous prices! I thought if I could play the waiting game and wait for the right opportunity luck might come my way! Well I almost lost hope when suddenly this one appeared and end of auction prices were too good to believe! A great stroke of luck! I dare say among the coolest of the 'oddballs' from our trusted and loved Tamiya brand!

A Super Hornet would look nice next to my original Hornet!! Will you build this?
The Super Hornet is a bit like the Falcon in the way that they are getting more rare! and they are a little bit over looked i think! I like the look of the Super Hornet and am looking for one for me...but the wheels would have to be gold!!

Nice find and nice kit Sunny!

Tamiya Era: Haider! This baby just arrived at my office this morning and I happened to have my camera in hand!

MAD-BEE: Yes James they have gotten rare and more expensive, as collectors have become very greedy and boy the amazement of some people throwing big money on these kits to win on eBay auctions amazes me! Luckily I will never have to build this one as I have a pair of restoration project Super Hornets with spare parts etc awaiting my magic wand so keep posted on future developments once my Avante restoration projects are completed!

Not really familiar with these but I do have a Grasshopper II Super G and it might be a similar chassis, this is a cool looking machine!

If Tamiya do not re-re some of the less popular buggies like this Super Hornet and the Falcon, Super Sabre, Striker,Sonic fighter,Thundershot and Thunder Dragon to name a few and these will be the Buggies we all crave after for our collections in the near future!! Thats great in a way!!
this gives these less favoured buggies a slice of lime light!!
Must say i am a fan of all the above buggies and repect them all admirably but for reason may it be looks or performance or perhaps the time of release these models don't have the same clout as some!!
But this could change as these Slightly oddball buggies become more elusive!!

I do realy fancy a Super Hornet though mate!

Wyoming: Cheers buddy! And yes they are almost exactly the same with only one small detail like the special 'D' Parts that supposedly help extend/improve the rear damper angles.

MAD-BEE: I do agree! The G'Hopper II and Super Hornet would probably never be re-released and I can see the demand for these kits have become fierce! Take this chap for example, on two auction occasions I was hammered by multiple bidders that poured big bid amounts and on both occasions they sold for USD480 and USD450 respectively! Now that's crazy for a kit that once sold for pittance. Luckily this one was sourced for 1/2 the asking price from an antique trinket seller who obviously sold for a client and not a TC member advertising!

MAD-BEE: And in addition to what I mentioned below, kits like the Sonic Fighter(quite popular now), Striker & Falcon(to a certain extent), G'Hopper II and Super Hornet(beginning to show a lot of bidding interest) will go up in value so now's the time to buy and keep!

You got a bargain there Sunny for sure!

Nice find! This is another one of those cars that I didn't like when it was new (too toy-ish at a time I was into racing buggies), but sure do like it now!

kyosho_collector: Thnx buddy! Rosey: Lols yeah it seems like it come to think about it! I'm collecting mainly buggies as you've probably noticed and mainly the ones I like, but if a real good deal does come my way for say an 'oddball' RC kit and it tickles my fancy I would probably take a second look...

sunnyjai

4-May-2012

Rosey: And to answer your 2nd question, Tamiya probably needed to make this kit in a vein attempt to rejuvenate their waning buggy market back in 1990. If you noticed there was a sudden change after these last few buggies 58100-58117 to 'touring cars' and all of a sudden market boom? But questionable the term 'Super' may have been but a possible collector's item if Tamiya doesn't decide to re-re the thing...

sunnyjai

4-May-2012

Rosey: I never actually justified acquiring 'oddballs' in the past based on their 'obscurity' nature to numerous collectors, but they seem to tickle my fancy somewhat can't think of another word that comes close to what I feel when one of these comes up for sale with the right 'prices'! Lols

Another fine addition to your ever increasing collection....It is always difficult to resist a bargain odd ball or not!!!!

TIMECMDR: Yes Tariq, you're right very hard to resist a good buy 'oddball'!

I think its getting more and more trendy to own the oddball, mediocre cars in my opinion Sunny!!
I seem to be a attracted to the less popular buggies or lets say unusual or even go as far to say i am drawn to the ugly ducklings !! I have evidence of this.....I have just bought myself a Thunder Dragon!! Now thats an ugly buggy... or is it not? but whichever this buggy has me fascinated! We all know the chassis on the Dragon is proven and has good reliabilty..but the Shell?? Why do i find it cool??
This could be the start of a new era in collecting Tamiya's....or am i just having a slight mid-life crisis??
Maybe its the fact that they have not been re-re? or the fact that i never paid much attention to these types of buggies over the years as all the big players had my full attention? There must be some reason why my attraction to these buggies is growing? Or perhaps its just me?
I fancy a Striker next!!lol

I say all of Tamiya's creations are Beautiful and leave it at that!!

I fancy a Super Hornet too!!!

Cheers buddy.

MAD-BEE: James, I personally and i'm sure along with some collectors out there seem to realise that the 'less popular'/'oddball' kits don't seem to be re-released. That means it's desirability 'may' go up as a result of its rarity and with increased demand would mean asking prices will go up. And to answer your second question - I reckon the T'Dragon now is a cool piece of kit - tho I did not see it that way back when I was a kid. It is cool now because we as enthusiasts see it as unique and unique and rare may translate to 'value'. And to answer your final question yes I reckon you should collect these oddballs. Some times I listen to what the vintage market dictates and in the case of these kits I don't, I follow my feelings and they seem to tickle my fancy and bargains can be had so 'Why Not!'...

These are awesome. I bought one of these for my grandfather (many years ago) who eventually ended up returning it to me because he never used it. I promptly sold it because I really wanted a re-re and an original NIB but I still love them.
