Budget Runner Shell
HI,
Right. As some of you will have seen in my showroom I have restored my 959 and I am very pleased with it sitting on the shelf. I now want to run the car occasionally but am not risking my restored body shell. I have a wrecked shell that the car came with but I wanted the car to look cool running as well.
The solution. Create a cool runner shell on a budget.
I repaired the wrecked front with fibre glass. Sprayed it on the outside. Made the stripes from Halfords sourced material. Printed off home created stickers as well as some I had from my resto. It still looked battered so I decided along with some poor condition runner wheels that were gold to spray it brown to make it look like a tatty, dirty rally car. I took a mold and created the drivers with some old helmets I had lying about. Luckily I had a spare spoiler. The mirrors and roof lights are just old plastic parts.
So now it can look pretty on the shelf and cool when running without risking any mint parts. Ive run it around the garden and I think it looks cool!
Hope you like my solution

Fantastic looking shells, side by side I have to say the weathered one is the winner for me. That repair worked really well!

Runner looks even better than the shell one. That has nothing to do with beautifull work on the shell body you did but the runner is unique and soo real.Hold the runner body, sell the shell one and buy a second runner to race with the first one

Fantastic work, on both shells

Thanks for the nice comments. I did not know what the reaction would be. I enjoyed doing this but really did not spend too long on it because it was so rough, but weathering it transformed it into a convincing looking shell.Dig out your rough shells and give it a go,its great fun!

That is some awesome work and very worth it as it brings more realism to the car with all that 'dirt' on it. Now go wash up after playing with your cars.

I must confess I still have the weathered shell on it on the shelf as i think it looks good next to all the tidy cars. The other shell is just mocked up. check out the new picture at the bottom.

Your runner shell is fantastic. I would keep it on all the time. Great work.

Very cool set of 959's. You are right the weathering does make it look really scale. Great job saving what looked like a total right off at first.

I love what you have done with the damaged bodyshell. An inspired, and brave, decision to weather the shell. It looks really great. Well done.
