With all the hype about Associated recently announcing their re-release of the original RC10, the car that literally changed the face of RC Cars in the early days, I thought it a good time to post my CE (Championship Edition).

When I received this new built, it appeared to have been stored out of its original box as it was covered by a thick coat of red sticky dust. For a moment, I had even thought that it had been used. However, a quick blast with my compressor showed otherwise. It was brand new and not even completely assembled with the throttle resistor, servo saver and stock AE motor still in the original plastic bags.

For those who are not familiar with early RC10’s, it’s easy to assume that they are all the same because of their main component – the gold pan or tub chassis. However, this is probably furthest from the truth. Placed side by side to my older pre-A stamp ’84 Cadinger (Edinger/Cadillac transition model), virtually no two parts are identical (ok, maybe the battery cups and straps).

This is the earliest version of the CE. It's still with the six gear transmission and two-piece wheels. The gold alloy shock caps were carry over parts from the earlier models and were phased out and later replaced with the black plastic type because they sealed better, were lighter and undoubtedly cheaper to manufacture. There are a few other signs, like the longer and solid front suspension arms which reveal the true age of this particular model as everything about it is original.

I love my RC10’s. They are the pride and joy of my vintage collection - simply because I longed so desperately for one as a kid, but they were never imported into the country in which I was raised. All I could do for umpteen years, was look at the AE advertisements in my magazine stash and dream of playing with such a kewl RC Car with the white nylon parts. I am grateful for the internet.

I am now awaiting the arrival of my new re-re RC10 Classic, and I’m going to say that this has been the easiest RC Car that I have ever put money down on. I was at my pc when the email from Airage came thro’ to make this incredible announcement. I was at my pc again the following day when Tower Hobbies’ pre-order notice came thro’. Without a second thought, all I did was click and buy.

See?! Dreams, they do come true! ;)

Beautiful - do you have the original body too ?

Thank you Percymon! I do, however it has been poorly trimmed by the original owner. I have a genuine Jammin' Jay body which I prefer that's going to be painted up for it.

Beautiful and a great story! I'm the same about Egress's and if Tamiya re-re'd that baby I'd order two without the blink of an eye. Memories and fulfilling dreams rock!

Very fine example CE version indeed I wasn't ever really after RC10s as a kid since I could drive my buddies anytime but I did pre-order a few to do some projects

Thank you Lads for all your nice comments. @ Puffdog - Yes mate, that is where me, or my Mum also bought all my magazines. It would be interesting to see if Kyosho follow the trend because their cars would be more costly to resurrect. They do however have 30 odd years on their side should they decide. @ Wyo & Modified Man - I did consider ordering a couple, but figured I might get another one later.

Rumour has it that AE will possibly re-re the later models, including trucks, depending on the response they receive for the Classic. You heard it here..

Hey nice cars you have there. I have thought a few times to get one then pulled out at the last minute as I want to stay with Tamiya but have pre ordered and paid for one. Can't wait for it to arrive ( and the two foxes from Stella on back order as well 😁

Great example....I was never into the gold pans as a kid but in the last few years became interested in the short-arm 6 gear occasionally browsing ebay but never pulling the trigger on an original. When the re-re was announced I too bought one without a second thought although I'm still contemplating an original instead. These are really beautiful cars!

Thank you Road Burner & R/CVET. @ R/CVET - I've always admired the RC10 Goldpan from a practical perspective and marveled at its engineering focus which was/is reliability and efficiency. However, now that you mention beauty, I have never grown tired of what they looked like and loved them more as time went on. So, I can only agree with you - Yes, they are beautiful cars.

Awesome RC10 mate. I have already put down the cash for two re-releases.

That's a great write up and story behind the build.
And you now have an amazing example to enjoy, it looks good just as it is.

Cheers Wandy - looking forward to it mate. @ Grumps - thank you for your nice words. I've had this car since 2010 and I'm almost scared to paint the body because it will hide its 'newness' However, it 'has to be done.
